As a result of Loving Naturals use of a non-nano oxide particle size, their sunscreen has a slight white tint to it. This is very helpful in applying to your children and yourselves so that you can see if you have missed any spots.
Sun Protection Factor (SPF)
The SPF indicates the time a person with sunscreen applied can be exposed to sunlight before getting sunburn, relative to the time a person without sunscreen can be exposed. This assumes constant solar intensity over the time period. On any day, someone who would burn after 12 minutes in the sun would expect to burn after 120 minutes if protected by a sunscreen with SPF 10. Protection from a particular sunscreen depends on factors such as the skin type of the user, amount applied and frequency of re-application, and activities of user such as swimming. There is no good clinical measurement for blockage of UVA radiation, but it is important that sunscreen block both UVA and UVB.
Zinc oxide is the broadest spectrum UVA and UVB absorber, better than any other physical or chemical sunscreen. Loving Naturals uses a non-nano, uncoated zinc oxide with a particle range of .5-10 microns. (A nanoparticle is .1 microns and smaller.) Zinc oxide is a non-toxic, physical, mineral sunscreen from naturally occurring zinc ore. It has a long history of use as a safe sunscreen, skin protectant, and as a treatment for skin disorders. It is widely known as the main ingredient in most diaper rash creams and is considered safe for use on infants and sensitive skin. Zinc oxide is a physical suncreen that sits on the surface of the skin and works by reflecting and scattering UVA and UVB light as opposed to chemical sunscreens which work by interacting with the skin’s top layer to absorb UV rays and convert them into energy.
UVA is Ultraviolet-A long wavelength light with a range of 320 - 400 nanometers.
UVB is Ultraviolet-B medium wavelength light with a range of 280 - 320 nanometers. (UVB is partially absorbed by the ozone layer.) UVC is Ultraviolet-C short wavelength light with a range of 100 - 280 nanometers (UVC is extremely dangerous but entirely absorbed by the earth's atmosphere.) Visible Light is within the range of 400 - 700 nanometers and may cause some free radical damage. Zinc oxide provides coverage between 290-700 nm. Nanoparticles are particles .1 microns in size or smaller. There are some concerns for nanoparticles being absorbed into the skin, entering the bloodstream and causing cellular damage.
Micronized is a term generally used to describe smaller particles and does not always mean nano sized particles. What size zinc oxide does Loving Naturals use? Loving Naturals' vegan sunscreen (original formula) contains uncoated zinc oxide with the smallest particle size being .12 microns. Loving Naturals' new clear zinc is uncoated with a non-nano size particle range from .5 - 10 microns.
UVA/UVB and Harmful Effects
UVA and UVB can damage collagen fibers, accelerate aging of the skin and can destroy vitamin A in skin, which may cause further damage. In humans, prolonged exposure to solar UV radiation may result in acute and chronic health effects on the skin, eyes, and immune system. UVA radiation is responsible for the indirect DNA damage to skin (free radicals and oxidation reactions) and causes the most deadly form of skin cancer, malignant melanoma. It penetrates deeply but it does not cause sunburn and therefore cannot be measured in SPF testing. UVB radiation is responsible for the direct DNA damage to skin that leads to sunburn and skin cancer.
Free Radicals are any atoms or molecules that have a single unpaired electron in an outer shell. For most biological structures, free radical damage is closely associated with oxidative damage. Free radical damage within cells has been linked to a range of disorders including cancer, arthritis, atherosclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, and diabetes.
Oxidation is a chemical reaction that transfers electrons from a substance to an oxidizing agent. Oxidation reactions can produce free radicals, which start chain reactions that damage cells.
Anti-oxidants are molecules capable of slowing or preventing oxidative damage to biological structures by removing free radicals and preventing oxidation reactions such as caused during a sunburn.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Do Loving Naturals sunscreens or other products contain peanuts or other nuts?
Loving Naturals' sunscreens actually never contained peanut oil. Loving Naturals' original formula SPF 30+ Sunscreen does contain macadamia nut oil which is actually a seed, not a nut and is not considered a concern unless there is a specific allergy which is rare. Macadamia Nut Oil is rich in essential fatty acids. It has a high oxidative stability making it especially suitable for sunscreen. Loving Naturals' Macadamia Nut Oil is USDA Certified Organic. Loving Naturals original formula SPF 30+ also contains sesame seed oil which those who are allergic to nuts may also be allergic to. For their new formulas, Loving Naturals does not use macadamia or sesame oils though they may contain trace amounts since they are manufactured in the same facility. Loving Naturals' Baby lotions contain almond oil, which is an extremely gentle, beneficial and common oil used for babies. An allergy to almond oil is extremely rare.
Are Loving Naturals' products gluten free and made in a gluten free facility?
All of Loving Naturals' products are gluten free. Loving Naturals does not manufacture any products containing gluten. Loving Naturals cannot guarantee all ingredients are sourced from gluten free facilities.
Can sunscreens other than the Clear Face SPF 30+ Sunscreen be used for the face?
Yes, all of Loving Naturals' sunscreens can be used on the face and should be when water resistance is needed.
Can the Clear Face SPF 30+ be used on the body?
Yes, the Clear Face SPF 30+ is specifically formulated for the face but can be used for the whole body. It has a lighter more lotion like feel to it. It is important to note that it is not water resistant so it should not be used when active and working up a sweat or swimming, but it is ideal for everyday use, wearing under makeup etc.
What is the difference between the Original SPF 30+ Sunscreen and the Clear Body SPF 30+ Sunscreen?
The Clear Body SPF 30+ has no scent and an improved, creamier consistency. It contains beeswax rather than soy so it is not vegan. The original formula is vegan and has a light nutty scent from the macadamia and sesame oils. Loving Naturals is transitioning their Original Formula to their zinc that rubs in clear but otherwise it will remain basically the same.
What is the particle size of zinc oxide in Loving Naturals Sunscreen?
The particle size of Loving Naturals' zinc oxide ranges from .5-10 microns, well above a nano-size particle. (A nano particle is .1 microns and below.)
Is Loving Naturals' zinc oxide uncoated?
Yes, Loving Naturals' zinc is uncoated. Many companies use a type of silicone to coat their zinc, Loving Naturals does not.
Does Loving Naturals conduct animal testing?
No, Loving Naturals is certified cruelty free by PETA and has confirmed all their suppliers also do not test on animals.
