    Dr. Mercola - Pure Power Protein Vanilla - 31 oz. (1 lb. 15 oz. / 880 g)

Dr. Mercola Pure Power Protein contains a whey protein concentrate with chia seeds. Top athletes and those 'dead-serious' about enhancing their health and fitness never stop searching for and demanding better ways to improve their performance and overall well-being.

But Dr. Mercola continues to demand the best possible solutions for building muscle and for peak performance.

Athletes may search the world over for more efficient ways to train… and better ways to optimize their diet and maximize the fuel they need. Some athletes weigh their food in an effort to achieve what they believe to be the delicate balance between consuming enough fuel calories without sacrificing optimal performance weight.

Dr. Mercola is not sure how many athletes actually weigh their food, but this clearly illustrates the passion many top athletes share when searching for that extra edge they need to boost performance, from pro athletes to Olympians to serious body builders.

If you're an athlete at any level, or someone serious about enhancing your nutrition and overall performance, Dr. Mercola's team has helped formulate a unique combination of ingredients that can potentially give you the edge you've been looking for.

Building Stronger Muscle, One Muscle Fiber at a Time…
Leucine is a branched chain amino acid found in certain foods.

It causes protein to be created and builds your muscle by its signaling of the mTOR (Mammalian Target of Rapamycin) mechanism.

However, you need FAR more leucine than the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) to reap this muscle-building benefit. In fact, you need massive amounts…

So where can you find leucine?

You'll find the highest concentrations of leucine and other branched chain amino acids (BCAA) in dairy products – especially quality cheeses and whey protein.

Even when getting leucine from your natural food supply, it's often wasted or used as a building block instead of an anabolic agent. So to create the correct anabolic environment, you need to boost leucine consumption way beyond mere maintenance levels.

Unfortunately, to get far and away your most competitive edge by exceeding maintenance levels is challenging. Here's why…

Based on nitrogen-balance measurements, the requirement for leucine that maintains your current body protein is 1-3 grams daily.

But to optimize its anabolic pathway, you need 8g - 16g daily.

This means that to reach 8 grams for anabolic purposes, you need the following humungous amounts of food:

    • a pound and a half of chicken
    • three pounds of pork
    • more than 1 pound of almonds (over 3000 calories)
    • 16 eggs
    • ½ pound of raw cheddar cheese

But remarkably, you only need about 3oz of high-quality whey.

Clearly, supplementing with whey protein can effectively allow you to get that 8g or more of leucine to build strong competitive muscle, without consuming freaky amounts of food and calories.

What's the Right Protein Powder for You?

    • Miracle Whey: Your choice for an immune supporting protein powder. Miracle Whey is, in my opinion, the best tasting and comes in the largest variety of flavors: vanilla, strawberry, chocolate, blueberry, banana, peanut butter (made from organic peanuts), original, and maple.
    • Mercola Pure Power Protein: is a premium product designed to boost your overall health and fitness levels. It contains a unique blend of high-quality whey protein, chia seeds, and probiotics to give you an edge over the competition or if you're more demanding about enhancing your overall health.
    • Pro-Optimal Whey: If you're looking for a multipurpose protein powder -- one that has additional vitamins and minerals, plus a full spectrum enzyme, then Pro-Optimal Whey is your choice.
    • Pea Protein: Perfect if you're a vegetarian, lactose intolerant, or if you're just looking to vary your protein source.

Could This Be the Nutritious Edge Top Athletes Are Looking For?
When it comes to building healthy lean muscle, many athletes swear by whey protein.

On his site alone, Dr. Mercola offers three whey protein powders, a pea protein (for vegetarians), and a tasty vegan protein powder to satisfy different needs.

Personally, after his morning workout, Dr. Mercola starts every day with a tasty whey protein shake he makes himself.

Sometimes Dr. Mercola fasts until early afternoon when he does his workout, but he always has his shake after his workout to give his muscles the fuel they need.

And even though Dr. Mercola is very pleased with the quality and taste of the whey protein shake he makes himself today, he's always thinking about what other ingredients and nutrients could be added to make it even better… in this case, for demanding athletes and those real serious about regular exercise.

Well, first off, to make anything better, one needs to go back to square one to see how you got there in the first place.

With whey protein powder, there are 9 essential elements Dr. Mercola's team previously identified that still hold true for selecting any high-quality whey protein. In fact, the whey protein powder Dr. Mercola uses in his post-workout shake today was developed based on these criteria.

9 Basic Essentials Every Whey Protein Powder Should Have
To Dr. Mercola, any whey protein powder is simply missing the mark unless it's made from and follows these '9 Essentials' at a minimum…

    1. Pasture-fed cows' whey, not pesticide-treated, grain-fed cows' whey – Compared to grain-fed cows, pasture-fed cows produce whey that…
      • Contains an impressive amino acid and immuno-supportive nutrient profile
      • Is rich in healthy fats – lipolic acid and CLA (conjugated linoleic acid)
    2. GMO-free –
      • Always look for and choose whey that is GMO-free
    3. Cold processed to protect the nutrients in their natural state, not heat processed – The majority of whey is heat processed which…
      • Makes the whey acidic and nutritionally deficient
      • Damages the immuno-supportive micronutrients and amino acids
      • Makes whey inadequate for consumption
    4. Acid-free processing, not Acid / Ion Exchange Processing – The bottom line is that Acid/Ion Exchange processing…
      • Is a less healthful, cheaper process than acid-free processing
      • Denatures amino acid profiles by using acids and chemicals to separate the whey from the fats
    5. Whey protein concentrate, not protein isolates – Protein isolates are proteins stripped away from their nutritional cofactors. Dr. Mercola has issues with isolates because...
      • Most isolates are exposed to acid processing
      • Your body cannot assimilate proteins in isolated form
      • Due to over-processing, isolates are deficient in key amino acids and nutritional cofactors
    6. Sweetened naturally, not artificially, and low carb – Many whey powders…
      • Are artificially sweetened making them undesirable if you have sugar sensitivities, or you want to avoid putting synthetic sweeteners or flavors in your body
      • Tend not to be low carb
      • Contain sugar alcohols, glycerin, or gluten, and some even use high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) as a sweetener
    7. Maximum biological value, not compromised or damaged – Most whey proteins provide some benefit. But, due to the ingredients, the source of the whey, the concentration of beneficial nutrients, or the type of processing, many whey products simply don't deliver what they promise.
      You want whey that…
      • Retains its maximum biological value
      • Contains all the key amino acids, cofactors, and beneficial micronutrients present and intact rather than compromised or damaged
      • Is not lacking any amino acids or other essential nutrients
    8. Easy to Digest, not Causing Digestive Stress – Many whey products contain long-chain fatty acids which are hard to digest and require bile acids to absorb.
You want a whey protein powder that…
      • Contains medium-chain triglycerides (MCT)
      • Is easily absorbed, digested quickly, and is utilized as energy without causing digestive stress
      • Ideally, contains coconut oil – one of the best sources of MCT
    9. Free from Toxic Heavy Metals or at Such Low Levels not to be a Health Risk – You want to avoid protein powders, both whey and non-whey, that contain dangerous levels of heavy metals like mercury, lead, cadmium, and arsenic. Any high concentration of heavy metals consumed over time could lead to serious health consequences.

In fact, a Consumer Reports' evaluation showed how some leading brands of protein powders exceeded United States Pharmacopoeia's (USP) recommended safety limits for certain heavy metals.

So, these are the basic '9 Essentials' my team and Dr. Mercola have used to date to filter out any whey protein powders not up to their highest natural nourishment standards.

However, Dr. Mercola knows they can continue to add to these '9 Essentials' to enhance what's needed even more for athletes and folks who exercise on a regular basis. Dr. Mercola will have more of that unique solution coming up, but first let's review…

How High-Quality Whey Protein Can Give Your Health and Fitness a Boost
By using the '9 Essentials' to obtain a high-quality whey protein powder, you can take advantage of a variety of health benefits… because top-quality whey protein potentially…

    • Promotes your muscle strength, endurance, and recovery
    • Helps to preserve lean body tissue (particularly during exercise) as it delivers bioavailable amino acids and cysteine
    • Boosts your energy and supports your body's optimal metabolic rate
    • Helps maintain blood sugar levels already within the normal range
    • Promotes optimal intake of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals needed for your optimal wellness
    • Supports your immune system (as it contains immunoglobulins)
    • Helps maintain your blood pressure levels already within the normal range

These are just some of the health advantages you can benefit from if you stick to whey protein based on my '9 Essentials.'

But what's needed to take whey protein powder to an even higher level?

Why Good Taste is So Important
First of all, when it comes to developing any whey protein powder, Dr. Mercola cannot emphasize the importance of taste enough. Despite any added benefits, if it doesn't taste good, even athletes won't come back for more.

You can rest assured that any whey powder Dr. Mercola offer on my site will not contain any artificial sweeteners, sugar alcohols, glycerin, fructose, or gluten.

So, the challenge is how to naturally sweeten the powder just enough to make folks want to continue to use it.

That's why Dr. Mercola've spent many hours working with whey protein powder producers to make sure the taste is just right… as is the case with my current line of protein powders.

However, there's some confusion out there about one particular natural sweetener that needs addressing…

Maltodextrin – Make Sure You Pick the Right One!!
Most people aren't aware there are two different types of maltodextrin. If you don't know the difference you could be in for a very unpleasant surprise, so let me help explain the difference.

The naturally-occurring digestive resistant maltodextrin used to enhance flavor and provide other health benefits is a far-cry from the more commonly used synthetic varieties.

The critical distinction here is "naturally-occurring." Synthetic variants of maltodextrin do exist and are often used as cheap sweeteners in protein powders. Dr. Mercola purposely avoid synthetic maltodextrin because it…

    • Is artificially created when acid/enzymes are applied to starch
    • Can potentially raise insulin levels
    • May cause depletion of your body's vitamins and minerals
    • Typically is GMO (genetically modified)
    • Is not digestive resistant

Instead, the naturally-occurring digestive resistant maltodextrin is…

    • Classified as water soluble fiber
    • Resistant to digestion
    • GMO-free
    • Rich in pre-biotic food to support healthy gut bacteria

So, you can see the significant differences between synthetic maltodextrin and the naturally-occurring maltodextrin. Not only does naturally occurring digestive resistant maltodextrin enhance the taste, it also provides other health benefits as well… a win-win scenario.

And once again, you can rest assured that Dr. Mercola would never approve anything synthetic to go into the very whey protein powder Dr. Mercola use, or plan on using myself on a daily basis… even if it made the taste irresistible.

How a Centuries-Old Cucumber 'Cousin' Enhances Taste
There's another sweetener Dr. Mercola highly recommend… and that's Luo Han. It is a cousin of the cucumber and a member of the gourd family. And from a health and wellness standpoint, it's been shown to not affect your blood sugar levels.

Luo Han extract has been used traditionally in China for centuries. But what brought it to the attention of American food manufacturers was the discovery of a secret locked in the fruit extract – called mogrosides.

As it happens, mogrosides are 300 times sweeter than sucrose… but contain hardly any calories and don't spike your blood sugar.

These mogrosides are part of a group of compounds called triterpene glycosides. They taste sweet, but your body treats them differently than carbohydrates. Insulin levels don't rise… they aren't broken apart to produce energy… and you don't put on the pounds when consuming them.

This should give you a pretty good idea why Dr. Mercola like this sweetener so much and recommend its use in whey protein powder. It's simply another piece of the puzzle to naturally sweeten the whey to create a balanced more desirable flavor.

Whey Concentrate or Whey Isolate? – Pick the Wrong One and You're Asking for Trouble
An area Dr. Mercola feels that's critically important whenever developing an elite brand of whey protein powder is whether to use whey concentrate or whey isolate in the formula.

This is an area that often gets glossed over and one Dr. Mercola feel deserves more attention. And talk about an area of major confusion… many supposed experts favor whey isolate. But to me, they've not thoroughly done their homework on this.

    And why is that?

Here are some of the reasons Dr. Mercola is not in favor of using isolates in any protein powder … because whey isolate…

    • Is derived from pasteurized dairy and processed with heat and acid.
    • Goes through a process that removes the fat which in turn removes important components of whey's immunological properties… healthful properties such as phospholipids, phosphatidylserine, and cortisol.
    • Cheats you out of IgG immunoglobulins, which are excellent sources of glutamine and cysteine bound to fat globules.
    • Hinders your body from effectively assimilating proteins in this isolated form.
    • Is deficient in key amino acids and nutritional cofactors.

The bottom line with whey isolate… if you over-process the protein and remove the fat, you're left with clearly inferior whey protein.

That's why Dr. Mercola promote whey concentrate… from raw unpasteurized milk… from pasture-fed cows… and cold processed to avoid over-processing and heat damage.

Why You Should Avoid Soy Like the Plague
Many whey protein powders are not GMO-free. And often at the heart of this matter is a cheap soy-based compound called soy lecithin.

If you look closely at a protein powder label and see soy lecithin listed in any form, this is something Dr. Mercola strongly suggests you avoid. Sunflower lecithin is much preferred over soy lecithin. But if you can confirm that the soy lecithin used in the product is organic and non-GMO, it is ok, but not nearly as healthful as your whey protein should be.

There's little doubt in my mind GMO soy lecithin is not an ingredient Dr. Mercola would accept in anything he consumes… including whey protein powder. Dr. Mercola strongly recommends you take this approach as well.

Fiber – An Often Overlooked Nutrient
Now that Dr. Mercola has identified several ingredients to avoid and the importance of natural sweeteners in any whey protein mix, what about other ingredients that could potentially enhance it?

First off, Dr. Mercola recommends taking a closer look at the amount of fiber included in your protein powder. It's important to realize how fiber is a healthful ingredient for your digestive and elimination systems… an added help to your overall regularity.

Dr. Mercola believes fiber content in whey protein powder would be worth the extra benefits to athletes and health-conscious folks alike. So, be sure to take a closer look at any protein powder label for evidence of a natural healthy supply of fiber within.

How Maintaining a Healthy Gut Can Enhance Your Protein Benefits
One challenge when optimizing protein intake from whey is protein gets digested in your stomach. This means that a large percentage of amino acids may not be fully utilized and may not reach your lower intestine.

Keeping your gut as healthy as possible is essential in maximizing your benefits from natural protein. And that's where high-quality probiotics come in.

By introducing billions of tiny microflora ('good' bacteria) into your digestive system in the form of probiotics, you can help…

    • Maintain your ideal 'good' to 'other' bacteria ratio
    • Support your production of B vitamins and vitamin K
    • Promote mineral absorption
    • Support carbohydrate digestion via probiotic enzymes
    • Aid your metabolism and the breakdown of toxins
    • Maintain appropriate bowel transit time
    • Support your immune system function
    • Produce lactic acid to support a healthy colon pH balance

But, there's even more probiotics can do for you when it comes to protein.

Probiotics can also help your body synthesize leucine, which you need for muscle building. So, not only can high-quality probiotics keep your gut healthy, when combined with high-quality whey protein, probiotics can enhance muscle development.

Sounds like a win-win scenario to me.

    Wouldn't you agree?

Now, if only someone would find a way to combine both high-quality whey protein and probiotics into the same powder… that would be something.

Dr. Mercola's Five Additional 'Essentials' Take Protein Powder to a Whole New Performance Level
At this point, to achieve a more optimal level of whey protein powder geared more for athletes, Dr. Mercola really feel that the '9 Essentials' can be used as the baseline and tweaked with additional nutrients and ingredients (as well as making sure certain risky ingredients are not included).

Based on what Dr. Mercola introduced above, here are five additional criteria he believes are necessary to give the '9 Essentials' an added boost…

    • Put even more emphasis on good taste – Sweeteners like digestive resistant maltodextrin and Luo Han fit the bill.
    • Look for more fiber – Keeping yourself 'regular' can be key to maintaining top performance levels.
    • Include probiotics in the formula – Helps to synthesize leucine to enhance building muscle and helps you maintain a healthy gut.
    • Focus on mineral content – In this case, calcium, which plays a key role in muscle contraction and is necessary for exercise recovery.
    • Avoid soy lecithin – This is a waste product laden with solvents and pesticides and should be shunned at all costs.

When these five are added to the '9 Essentials,' you now have a minimum of 14 selection requirements Dr. Mercola believes are needed for the optimal whey protein powder.

And once again, Dr. Mercola has taken most of your guesswork out of finding such a difficult-to-find protein powder. That's why he helped formulate a unique whey protein to meet and exceed the additional 5 requirements. Dr. Mercola has yet to see another powder as good as Mercola Pure Power Protein that satisfies and exceeds his challenging criteria.

One of the Healthiest Fibers on the Planet
As you already discovered, a high-quality whey protein is not only dependent on the ingredients that go into the formula, it's also dependent on the right kind of processing to yield optimal nutritious results.

In developing Mercola Pure Power Protein, one challenge that presented itself was how to include more fiber in the powder.

This was not a small task because the natural solution Dr. Mercola wanted the most came from chia seeds… a food high in fiber, protein, and essential oils. This has one of the best combinations of water soluble and insoluble fibers on the planet.

Chia was a staple for Incan, Mayan, and Aztec cultures.

"Chia" is even the Mayan word for "strength", and Chia seeds used to be referred to as "Indian Running Food" because they are so energizing. Apache and Aztec warriors sustained themselves by bringing the seeds along while on conquests.

The major issue faced by the manufacturing process was how to grind the chia seeds and add them to the formula without having them go rancid.

This is where a high-quality manufacturer became invaluable – with processes focused on avoiding rapid oxidation and rancification. Many producers of protein powder address this issue by using unnatural synthetic preservatives.

Using synthetic preservatives of any kind are unacceptable to me. And that totally applies to any manufacturing process.

Dr. Mercola's manufacturer of choice has not only solved the preservation problem in their innovative development of the O2B Peroxidation Blocker and CO2 DeepExtract processes, these application specific systems…

    • Completely avoid the use of synthetic preservative chemicals – Only use non-GMO ingredients
    • Are designed to protect sensitive essential oils like the ones present in chia seeds
    • Combine highly effective botanical ingredients to prevent the destructive oxidative, photochemical, and rancification reactions involved in chia seed grinding and processing
    • Improve efficacy – Isolation of key components potentially allows higher dosage and targeted performance
    • Potentially enhance the shelf-life and stability of supplements

By naturally protecting the chia seeds and essential oils from rancidity and oxidation, Mercola Pure Power Protein contains added fiber without compromising shelf-life and longevity.

All Ingredients Working Together to Provide a Super Protein Powder Not Available Until Now
To show you the extraordinary nutrients incorporated into Mercola Pure Power Protein, let's take a deeper dive into a sample of the ingredients and their potential benefits….

Whey Protein Concentrate – Non-denatured, cold pressed pasture-fed cows' whey protein… needed to support athletic performance, muscle recovery and buildup.

This is the first time Dr. Mercola has been able to introduce this higher quality whey protein. It is a very serious upgrade with immune supporting components.

    • Sweet Whey – Non-denatured natural whey… helps replenish essential elements, electrolytes, and trace minerals lost during exercise.
    • Natural sweeteners – Both digestive resistant maltodextrin and Luo Han used to enhance the overall taste and provide other natural benefits.
    • Chia Seeds – Regarded by botanical experts as a super food, chia seeds are high in protein, fiber, and essential oils.
    • Coconut MCT (medium-chain triglycerides) – Medium-chain fatty acids have been shown to be an ideal muscle fuel. MCT can replenish muscle energy without raising insulin, support weight management, and promote lean muscle gain.
    • Sunflower Seed Lecithin – Unlike soy lecithin which is typically GMO, sunflower lecithin is 100% chemical-free and non-GMO… provides phospholipds and nutrients to support muscle performance and increase resiliency to stress.
    • Probiotics – 15 billion count per serving of blended 'good' bacteria… helps keep your gut healthy and helps synthesize leucine to support muscle development.

If you're a demanding athlete and serious about whey protein, you must be impressed by the ingredients that make up Mercola Pure Power Protein.

Which Protein Powder is Right for You?
One very important point to make here is that Dr. Mercola still considers Miracle Whey to be an excellent source of whey nutrition. You now simply have another option if you need and want even more from your protein powder as a serious athlete.

Mercola Pure Power Protein simply takes the '9 Essentials' used to develop Miracle Whey, and enhances the formula even more. For some folks, Miracle Whey is all they need… for others, who demand even more, Mercola Pure Power Protein, will provide even more benefits.

Here's a chart comparing both whey protein powders… with highlights showing where Mercola Pure Power Protein takes things to an even higher nutritional level for more demanding athletes…

How Three Unique Ingredients Work Together to Deliver the Ultimate Nourishment
In many cases in natural nutrition, the sum of combinations of natural foods and supplements can be greater than the individual nutrient parts.

Dr. Mercola believes that to be the case with Mercola Pure Power Protein. The unique combination of natural super foods… whey protein, chia seeds, and probiotics potentially…

    • Provides a high biological value – These three superfoods yield high absorption and digestion of protein powder.
    • Maximizes immune support – Made with Immuno Whey which is especially high in immuno components to help counteract oxidative stress caused by exercise.
    • Enhances muscle nourishment – Provides key nutrients required for nourishing muscles and triggering lean muscle gain.

The exclusive triple-power of whey protein, chia seeds, and probiotics is like no other Dr. Mercola has seen in satisfying demanding athletes looking for the optimal protein powder.

    Eco-Friendly, Advanced Packaging
Not only is Pure Power Protein what Dr. Mercola believe to be your best option for a top-quality, enhanced protein powder, it also comes in a revolutionary packaging that is better for the environment, and you!

Unlike the plastic containers of the past, Pure Power Protein now comes in innovative gusset bags.

By using a bag instead of the plastic container, much less space is used during the shipping process, therefore less fuel is used overall for transport.

In addition, the bag makes it easy to pour the last couple of servings into the scoop without making a huge mess, which can happen with rigid, round plastic containers.

Dr. Mercola is constantly working with his team to improve not just their product formulas and formulations, but how to make your life easier with container packaging improvements.

    MANUFACTURER INFO

    Dr. Mercola

Dr. Mercola was born and raised in the inner city of Chicago, IL. He had a normal childhood, and it was in his school years that he truly took an interest in health and wellness. In his early twenties, he worked as a pharm tech at a physician's office. He worked at the Illinois Eye Bank to harvest donated eyes to be used for cornea transplant. He also worked at the Kidney Bank.

He first began seeing patients at his private wellness clinic in Schaumburg, IL, in 1985. He was a sole practitioner. It was filled with routine checkups, school physical exams, and seeing chronically ill patients. He was prescribing drugs, but realized that they were not working. He began exploring the world of natural medicine in the early 1990s. After seeing drastic improvements when his patients modified their diet and became more physically active, he changed the way he practiced medicine.

His passion is to transform the traditional medical paradigm in the United States, and that consumes most of his free time. For 40 years since 1968, he was an active runner; He completed the Chicago Marathon in just over three hours, among other accomplishments. He has also been a computer hobbyist since 1985, with an interest in the Internet that dates back to the early '90s.

The existing medical establishment is responsible for killing and permanently injuring millions of Americans, but the surging numbers of visitors to Mercola.com since he began the site in 1997 - they are now routinely among the top 10 health sites on the Internet - convinces him that you, too, are fed up with their deception. You want practical health solutions without the hype, and that's what he offers.
