Look for the Certified Organic label. Avoid misleading labeling such as "organics", "natural" and "organically produced" without evidence of certification.
CULTIVATING A STRONG FOUNDATION
The Santa Cruz Organic brand's roots stretch back to the early 1970's when founder and nature lover, John Battendieri, began revitalizing abandoned orchards in the Santa Cruz mountains, an area known for its high-quality, flavorful fruit. Battendieri pressed his first batch of "Mr. Natural" apple juice in 1972, making it one of the first packaged organic products.
Why Organic? WHAT IS THE DEFINITION OF ORGANIC?
The national organic standards were fully implemented in October 2002. After more than a dozen years in the making, these standards give consumers clear and consistent product labeling, as well as the added assurance of a uniform set of standards backed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Generally speaking, organic food and fiber crops are made without the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers. Santa Cruz Organic products labeled "organic" contain at least 95 percent organic ingredients, excluding water or salt. These products are labeled "organic" and carry the USDA seal on the primary display panel.
NO GENETICALLY MODIFIED ORGANISMS (GMO)
Specifically prohibited from organic crops are genetically modified organisms (GMO), irradiation, and the use of sewage sludge; all three practices are permissible in conventional agriculture. The USDA requires farms and production facilities, except for very small farms, to be certified organic before their products can claim to be organic. Smucker Natural Foods, Inc. takes great care to provide products that are made with high-quality and wholesome ingredients. They have established a documentation program for all of our natural products, with the goal of using only ingredients grown and produced without the use of biotechnology. They verify that suppliers of their organic, raw materials meet the requirements of the National Organic Program. Their consumers can be assured we are in full compliance with existing federal regulations and policies with respect to food labeling and product safety. They will continue to monitor this situation and comply with any future regulations. Santa Cruz Organic is proud to be an official participant of The Non-GMO Project
CERTIFIED ORGANIC HISTORY
The implementation of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Organic Program in 2012, enacted regulations and standards that products labeled "organic" are truly organic. Since then, the organic industry has shown increased growth and heightened consumer awareness. All Santa Cruz Organic brand products meet, or exceed these standards. Organic Awareness: According to a 2011 study by the Organic Trade Association, 78% of U.S. families say they are choosing organic food, up from 73% in 2009. The study also indicates that four in ten families are buying more organic products than they were a year ago and that 72% of parents are familiar with the USDA organic seal, up significantly from 65% in 2009. Organic Acreage: According to the USDA Economic Research service, organic farming has been one of the fastest growing segments of U.S. agriculture for over a decade. Certified organic acreage in the U.S. surpassed more than 4.8 million acres in 2008, up from 127,432 acres in 2001 and doubling between 2002 and 2005. Consumers who purchase Santa Cruz Organic products are helping to promote certified organic acreage
WHY CHOOSE ORGANIC?
Organic Products Meet Stringent Standards: Organic certification is the public's assurance that products have been grown and handled according to strict procedures. The U.S. Department of Agriculture's certified organic seal lets consumers know which products are certified organic, and assures them that the products have met government standards. Organic Food Tastes Great: It's common sense: Well-balanced soils grow strong, healthy plants, which grow great tasting food!
Organic Farms Respect Their Water Resources: The reduction of polluting chemicals and nitrogen leaching, done in combination with soil building, protects and conserves water resources. Organic Farmers Work in Harmony with Nature: Soil is the primary focus of organic farming. By building soil, organic growers help prevent soil erosion, which has become a major problem in U.S. agricultural centers.Organic Producers Are Leaders in Innovative Research: Organic farmers have led the way, largely at their own expense, with innovative on-farm research aimed at minimizing agriculture's impact on the environment. Organic Producers Strive to Preserve Diversity: The loss of a large variety of species (biodiversity) can have unforeseen and detrimental effects on our environment. Organic farmers and gardeners have been collecting and preserving seeds, and growing unusual varieties for decades. Organic Farming Helps Keep Rural Communities Healthy: Organic farming may be one of the few survival tactics left for the family farm and the rural community. By choosing organic practices, farmers create a value-added product that can be sold at a premium.Organic Is Abundant: Now every food category has an organic alternative. And nonfood agricultural products are being grown organically - even cotton, which most experts felt couldn't happen.
THEIR COMMITMENT TO RENEWABLE ENERGY
Everyone associated with the Santa Cruz Organic brand - from manufacturer to growers in the field - is dedicated to making environmentally sound choices. Sustainability at SCO means sustaining our premium quality by supporting sustainable resources … from the farms and suppliers we work with to our on-site solar energy generation. In addition to their onsite renewable energy generation, we purchase wind Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs). Their wind REC purchase combined with our on-site solar energy generation offsets 100% of the energy used to produce our products, ensuring that our entire line of great tasting Santa Cruz Organic brand products is made with renewable energy. All Santa Cruz Organic brand products are certified USDA Organic. Our unwavering commitment to organic ingredients supports our relentless desire to work in harmony with nature.
WHAT IS RENEWABLE ENERGY?
Renewable energy is produced from any resource that can be naturally replenished, such as wind, solar, biomass, landfill gas, geothermal or small hydroelectric. Conventional methods of electricity generation in the United States use fossil or nuclear fuels - forms of power generation that can be harmful to human health and the environment. In fact, electricity generation is considered the largest source of pollution worldwide. Tjeor renewable energy purchase, in conjunction with our on-site solar power generation, prevents more than 1,562 metric tons of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emissions, a key greenhouse gas, from being released into the atmosphere every year. This is equivalent to the amount of CO2 absorbed by 333 acres of forest or taking 306 cars off the road for an entire year! They continually strive to find additional ways to integrate environmentally sound practices into our business. By supporting renewable energy, we are working to close the loop of our production cycle and make their products sustainable from start to finish. You can rely on us to always be thinking ahead and acting in the best interest of families, farmers and the planet.
HOW DO THEY BUY RENEWABLE ENERGY?
Renewable Energy Certificates (sometimes called RECs, green tags or green certificates) allow customers anywhere in the U.S. to support the generation of renewable energy by purchasing the renewable attributes of a specific quantity of renewable energy. This ensures that more renewable energy is added to the electricity grid, displacing conventional fuels, such as coal, nuclear or gas from the electricity system. Renewable Energy Certificates act like a claim check on each megawatt hour of renewable electricity delivered to the grid. The purchaser of a Renewable Energy Certificate owns a claim to the environmental savings (such as CO2 reduction) that results from the production of that electricity. Green Certificates contribute to an improved, more sustainable environment - for the good of today and for the benefit of future generations. Just as their organic certification is a public assurance that products have been grown and handled according to strict procedures, we are also purchasing Green-e certified renewable energy. The Green-e program certifies that the Renewable Energy Certificates we purchase meet strict environmental and consumer protection standards established by the non-profit Center for Resource Solutions.
OUR SUSTAINABILITY COMMITMENT - ONSITE ENERGY PRODUCTION
At our Chico, CA, facility we have invested proactively in energy efficiency and renewable energy sources. Their facility employs two Photo Voltaic (Solar Energy) systems, totaling 450 kilowatts. They've installed a wastewater treatment system to capture methane gas, which is then converted to electricity to power our facility. They also capture waste heat to assist in the pasteurization process on both of our production lines. Our renewable power generation, combined with our other on-site power sources, lets us generate more than 25% of the energy they use from renewable resources.
They are committed to being sustainable, responsible and keeping the planet remarkable. They go to great lengths to minimize waste associated with making their products and are a Green-e certified company recycling more than 95% of their waste and buying enough renewable energy each year to cover our production needs. In 2011 our Chico, California, facility achieved a remarkable 99.5% recycling rate and, to them, that's a beautiful thing. They continuously achieve a remarkable 99.5% recycling rate for production, meaning only 0.5% of what comes into their production facility is disposed via landfill. Their recycling program has diverted over 47,000 tons of trash away from local area landfills, helping us toward our waste reuse goal of 95%. The refuse we've recycled would have been enough trash to fill up 3,200 train cars. Looked at another way, we have diverted enough 30-foot long, by 10-foot wide, by 6-foot high waste containers from landfill to stack to the top of the Empire State Building more than 42 times. Live Organic. Live Santa Cruz.
