Trilogy has an international reputation for producing ethical, sustainable, high-performance natural skincare. It began with a rather special discovery – rosehip oil.
Natural Skincare That Works
Trilogy's philosophy is simple: natural skincare that works. They’re committed to producing high performance natural skincare which delivers results you can see and feel. Independent clinical studies conducted on their rosehip oils show how effective they are. With over a decade of research, development, and product innovation behind them, Trilogy makes products that not only perform better, they are better – ethically, aesthetically, and environmentally. All of which helps you make a conscious decision about the way you care for your skin, your wellbeing and your world.
Simple, Pure, Vital - Trilogy's Philosophy
Trilogy is motivated by three little words. But they’re more than just words; they’re Trilogy's heart, foundation, and the core of everything they do. They create simple and unique blends of the purest botanical actives for people living vital lives.
Building a Meaningful Business
It’s not rocket science. It’s about being responsible with every choice made, and trying to do better ethically, environmentally, and socially. Before it reaches you, each bottle, jar or tube of oil, cream or lotion has completed a journey from pre-production microbiological testing to mixing and finishing, more micro testing, quality assurance, bottling, sampling, packaging, and shipping before it reaches the store floor. Whether formulating a new product, designing packaging, or transporting products around the globe, Trilogy looks for sustainable ways to minimize the impact on the world.
Trilogy became NZ’s first certified carbon-neutral skincare company in 2007 and Verification NZ audits their corporate operations every year. They’re always working to reduce their footprint and they offset what remains.
No Animal Testing
Trilogy is a Choose Cruelty Free accredited company. They do not test their ingredients, product prototypes, or finished products on animals and they work closely with their ingredient suppliers to ensure they are aware of Trilogy's company values and policies.
Natural and Organic Certification
Trilogy is NZ’s first skincare brand to achieve Natrue Natural Cosmetics Certification. An internationally recognized, independent guarantee of authentically natural products, you’ll find the Natrue logo on the packaging. At Trilogy, they only use the word 'organic' to describe ingredients and finished products which are certified by a recognized third party accreditation body. Without certification, Trilogy believes the word 'organic' can be misleading. Their rosehip oils are certified organic by BioGro New Zealand Ltd, NZ’s leading organic certifier.
Trilogy tries to keep packaging to a minimum and they’re always looking to find more sustainable solutions. There are three main types of packaging Trilogy uses:
Glass - for bottles and jars
Plastic - for bottles, closures and tubes
Board/paper - for outer packaging, labels and brochures
Glass and plastic are manufactured from burning fossil fuels and a chemical polymerization process. Cardboard and paper pulp used to create packaging is manufactured from timber. Trilogy's suppliers have full FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) accreditation and are ISO 14001 certified (an environmental management system). The FSC scheme ensures they can trace the origin of their wood sources and aims to ensure environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable forestry products. Where ever possible Trilogy strives to use paper made using post-consumer content to help with reduce landfill.
They consider the type of ink and varnish used on a box or label, and choose the best option for the environment. The majority of their inks are fully bio-degradable bio-inks, manufactured from renewable vegetable oils, and all Trilogy inks and varnishes are recyclable. Waste ink from the production process is returned to the supplier for recycling.
What happens to the packaging after the product is finished is just as important as how it was produced. A high percentage of plastic ends up in land fill which takes years to degrade. To prevent this, it is important to consider plastic types and their recyclability. You’ll find recycle codes on all Trilogy plastics to aid sorting and collecting. This code identifies the type of polymer used (e.g. polyethylene, polypropylene). You need to check with your local council to see which types can be recycled in your area. All of Trilogy's boxes, labels, and glass are printed with a universal recycle symbol reminding customers to recycle where possible.
Glass is recyclable and can be placed in most local recycle streams.
Cardboard and Paper
All Trilogy boxes and paper products are recyclable.
Lids, Pumps, and Closures
Trilogy's closures are made from recyclable plastic. Pump closures may have metal hidden inside to facilitate the 'pump' action, which means they may not be recyclable in all areas.
Trilogy's labels are produced from a plastic material or paper pulp. While not necessarily a requirement of recycling glass or plastic, they recommend the removal (by immersion in very hot water for about a minute) and responsible disposal of labels from glass or plastic packaging before recycling.
The majority of Trilogy's tubes have a recycle code 4 (low density polyethylene). Trilogy products containing SPFs are packaged in code 2 (high density polyethylene). The code for the caps on all Trilogy tubes is 5 (polypropylene).
All plastic bottles and jars are code 1 (polyethylene terephthalate), commonly known as PET.
Small Green Feet
It’s an investment in Trilogy's mission statement: "maximum effect on your skin, minimum effect on our environment". And it’s a commitment to their brand, team, partners, and customers.
Trilogy is a certified carbon neutral skincare brand. They’re always working to reduce their carbon footprint and offset what remains. The importance they place on it helps keep their day-to-day business practices aligned with their mission for ethical, environmental, and social responsibility.
Trilogy corporate operations achieved carbon neutral status in 2007, making them the first New Zealand skincare brand to commit to the standard. They don’t claim that individual products in their range are carbon neutral as the audit process doesn’t cover what happens to the products once they leave Trilogy's hands.
Annual Carbon Audit
Trilogy goes through an annual audit process with Verification New Zealand. Throughout the year, they monitor and record data on operations which are sources of greenhouse gases to produce an annual Carbon Emissions Inventory Report. Once the report has been verified, they purchase carbon offsets to mitigate carbon emitted during that period.
Verification NZ Assesses:
- Consumption of gaseous and liquid fuels for space heating
- Indirect emissions associated with purchased electricity
- Combustion of liquid fuels by vehicles
- Indirect emissions for commercial air travel
- Indirect emissions for sea and air freight
Trilogy offsets any carbon emissions with the annual purchase, through Carbon Market Solutions, of verified emission reduction credits (VER'S) from the Palmerston North City Council's Awapuni Landfill Gas Project. Approved under the Projects to Reduce Emissions (PRE) Mechanism of the New Zealand Government, this project captures methane from the landfill.
Trilogy believes in natural skincare. They believe in it so much they’re certified to the highest standard.
What is natural?
With no legal definition for the word ‘natural’, it can be hard to identify what’s truly natural and whether products are what they say they are. Trilogy holds the internationally recognized Natrue Natural Cosmetics Certification. The Natrue standard offers you an independent guarantee that you're buying authentically natural products. Simple.
The Natrue Logo Means:
- Natural and organic ingredients
- Soft manufacturing processes
- Environmentally friendly practices
- No animal testing
- No synthetic fragrances and colors
- No genetically modified ingredients
- No petroleum derived products
- No silicone oils and derivatives
- No irridation of end products and botanical ingredients
Who is Natrue?
Natrue is a non-profit international association established in 2007 by pioneer European manufacturers of natural and organic cosmetics. Natrue’s goal is to promote and protect natural beauty and skin care products by offering a global standard. Natrue's accredited local agent, BioGro New Zealand Ltd, is New Zealand’s leading organic certifier and has been at the forefront of commercial organics in New Zealand since it was founded 28 years ago. BioGro is the only Australasian certification body accredited to certify products under Natrue.
Supporting and being involved in their local communities is an important part of Trilogy’s culture. Like you, they’re passionate about the environment, mad about animals and they like to do as much as they can in areas of humanitarian need. Whether it’s a charity, community event, play group, or school activity, Trilogy likes to help wherever they can. They’re proud to support many charities and organizations across the globe. They run an annual campaign for the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation and they’ve donated over NZ $55,000 to help preserve orangutan habitats to date.
