Frequently Asked Questions
Are Amazing Grass products Gluten Free?
Yes, Amazing Grass products are gluten free. Their cereal grasses are harvested prior to jointing, before the grain forms and any gluten is present. They test for gluten and their products are enjoyed by people worldwide with gluten free diets including celiac disease.
Please note, their Energy Bars are manufactured in a plant that processes wheat, milk, eggs, soy, peanuts and tree nuts.
Do they use Siberian Ginseng in any of their products?
They DO NOT USE any Siberian Ginseng in any of their products.
How many servings of fruits and veggies is in one scoop of Amazing Grass?
The answer is not necessarily black and white. Fruits and vegetables can vary widely in their nutritional content and depending on what nutrients you are comparing, you could skew the answer to the desired result. As an example, a serving of iceberg lettuce and a serving of spinach salad may be equal in servings, but very different in terms of nutritional value.
That said, in real general terms, a serving of their wheat grass powder provides approximately 3 to 4 servings of some of the best deep green leafy vegetable nutrition available. A serving of their Green SuperFood or Berry Green SuperFood provides approx 4 to 5 servings of fruits and vegetables.
Some people use ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) to measure and compare that score to other fruits and vegetables. While ORAC can provide a baseline comparison, they believe it is just part of the equation. Every whole food has thousands of chemical compounds that work in synergy together to provide the nutritional benefits that is inherent in that whole food.
The ORAC score is a way to measure a substances ability to neutralize free radicals in vitro (in a test tube) and does not necessarily translate to how that substance will perform in vivo (in the body). The reverse can also be true. Vitamin E is known as a very powerful antioxidant in the body, but has a very low ORAC score.
If you look at ORAC as a baseline, then their Green SuperFood has approximately 7 servings of fruits and vegetables (ORAC score of 3400) and their wheat grass would have 3 servings of F&V (ORAC score of 1700). Their chocolate GSF would be about 6 servings of fruits and vegetables using the same ORAC value (ORAC score of 3100). By this same measure, their new ORAC Green SuperFood has an ORAC score of 40,000 and using the same math would equate to 30 servings of fruits and vegetables in one scoop.
While green superfoods provide antioxidants, they are ultimately prized for their plethora of chlorophyll and synergy of vitamins, minerals, carotenoids, protein and ability to alkalize and balance your body’s pH level, while providing a very concentrated form of essential green leafy vegetable nutrition.
What are the ingredients in their 'natural flavors'.
The ingredients in their "natural flavors" are derived from foods like fruits, vegetables, spices, cacao etc. All their natural flavors are organic compliant (no GMO’s, not irradiated, no pesticides, herbicides etc), vegan and Kosher. Essentially "natural flavors" is how they are required to list the flavors they use in any of their products. Their flavors are derived from fruits and vegetables and provide a way to achieve the desired consistent flavor and taste profile that consumers expect from Amazing Grass. There is no MSG in their products.
Are Amazing Grass products safe for pets to consume?
Sure, they have quite a few faithful canine and feline grassheads who love their wheat grass and green superfoods. Many owners remark at how they give their older pets sustained energy, a shiny coat and better overall health. Their wheat grass is probably the most popular and they have some pet food stores who sell it and also have received great feedback from animal rescue centers who tell them they see great responses from their dogs. Typically owners mix the powder into their pets water and wet food. A dog walker in NYC claims their wheat grass makes his job much easier with better poops all around!
Are your containers BPA free (bisphenol A)?
Yes, all product containers are BPA free, lids too. They use the highest quality #1 PETE containers for their organic Wheat Grass powder and tablets and Green SuperFood capsules) and #2 HDPE containers for the rest of their product line.
BPA is found mostly in polycarbonate plastics such as #7. It is probably best to avoid using these containers if possible. There is evidence that heating these containers may cause leaching so microwaving etc is not recommended. Many canned foods are also lined with plastics containing BPA and liquids are more susceptible to any potential leaching than powders.
Are your greens raw or uncooked?
Yes, their greens are raw and have not been cooked. Foods are generally considered raw if they are dehydrated at temperatures under 117 degrees. They dehydrate their greens using a specially designed low temperature dehydrator. The cell temperature of the leaves doesn’t get above 107 degrees. This allows them to retain maximum levels of heat sensitive nutrients like beta-carotene, phytonutrients and enzymes. There are many raw food chefs around the world that use Amazing Grass greens in their favorite recipes.
Are your products vegan?
All Amazing Grass products are 100% Vegan with two exceptions. The Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein bars contain whey protein. The Green SuperFood Pineapple Lemongrass contains some vitamin D3 that is sourced from lanolin. It is vegetarian and sheep are not harmed, but strict vegans may have an issue. There are no other animal sourced ingredients in their Pineapple Lemongrass Green SuperFood.
I haven't stored my Amazing Grass in the refrigerator or freezer, is it still good?
Most likely your Amazing Grass product is still fine to consume. Their products are dehydrated and very low in moisture content. As long as your product has been stored in a cool dry place, the chances of the product molding or becoming contaminated are fairly small. When their products are exposed to high temperatures, heat sensitive nutrients like betacarotene and some enzymes may have their nutritive levels dissipated somewhat. However, as long as stored properly (in a dry cool place) there is a good chance that your Amazing Grass product is still in great shape and safe to consume. They know many of their consumers (including all their employees) have traveled with an opened container for weeks at a time without cold storage. Bottom line, if you have the ability to store open containers in your refrigerator or freezer, that is preferred storage method, but their products should be fine to consume as long as they are stored in a cool dry place.
What is the expiration date on Amazing Grass products?
Amazing Grass products have at least a 2 year expiration date from the date of their manufacture. The wheat grass powder is 3 years from the date of manufacture. They guarantee the nutritional analysis for any bottles that are unopened and have been stored properly without exposure to extreme temperatures, until the expiration date listed on the bottle. Once opened, they recommend storing their products in the refrigerator or freezer to maintain their highest nutritive levels.
What kind of Alfalfa do they use in their products?
Their alfalfa is 100% organic whole-leaf alfalfa from their family farm in Kansas. Their alfalfa is guaranteed non-GMO and they use only the nutrient dense alfalfa leaf. They do not use any alfalfa sprouts in any of their products. Alfalfa has been revered for hundreds if not thousands of years. It is known for its high protein content and because the roots can grow deep, up to 20 feet into the sub soil, it is known for its ability to deliver trace minerals unavailable in shallow rooted plants. These trace minerals include calcium, phosphorus and magnesium.
Are Amazing Grass drink powders 'nut free'?
Yes, their powders are nut free and dairy free. Their facility does manufacture other products that contain these allergens. The facility is certified organic and GMP compliant and all lines are thoroughly cleaned between production runs according to GMP standards to prevent cross contamination. They do have many consumers with severe allergies to soy, nuts and dairy who consume their products daily.
Their Pineapple Lemongrass contains coconut water. Technically coconuts are considered a drupe. However the FDA lumps them in with ‘nuts’.
Is there caffeine in the Green SuperFood?
Their Green SuperFood is very low in caffeine; about 2 to 3 mg per 8 gram serving. By contrast, a cup of brewed Green Tea would typically contain less than 30 mg of caffeine and even decaffeinated coffee contains approx. 8-14 mg of caffeine. They have approx. 50 mg of green tea extract per 8 gram serving of Green SuperFood. Their Green Tea extract is high in polyphenols and the extract is very high in EGCG, an antioxidant that has powerful effects on the body.
Their Chocolate Green SuperFood has less than 1 mg per 8 gram serving. The sustained energy you experience from their products comes from their green foods and the antioxidant-rich blend of super fruits.
What is the 'ORAC' of the Green SuperFood?
Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) is a method of measuring antioxidant capacities of different foods. There are many things to consider when looking at the nutritional value of a product including; vitamins, minerals, enzymes, alkalinity and of course phytochemicals. Phytochemicals can support antioxidant protection, hormonal action, stimulation of enzymes, anti-bacterial effects and interference with DNA replication. Essentially they can help protect your body from diseases and cancer mutations.
In addition to providing an abundance of whole food nutritional benefits, their Green SuperFood is also very high in antioxidants. One 8 gram serving has an ORAC score of 2900. One ounce would equate to approx 10,200. For comparison, their ORAC Green SuperFood has an ORAC score of 40,000 per serving!
What is the difference between the powders and capsules?
The serving sizes are different between the powders and capsules. They are different because most consumers don’t want to take 12 capsules, so they made the serving size less for their capsules. For consumers who do want to get the same amount as an 8 gram serving of their powder, they recommend consuming 12 capsules at a time or they can consume 6 of them at different times during the day.
The reality is a serving can be any size. Their kidz has a 6 gram serving, their Energy a 7 gram serving, their original an 8 gram serving, while their Meals range from 22 grams to 32 gram servings. There are many different serving sizes. In each case the serving is based on what they feel is the recommended amount based on the function of the product.
Capsules always cost more than powder, and you always get less for your money. Unfortunately they can only fit so much powder into each capsule and they use the largest double lot veggie caps that are available. Each capsule itself costs them several pennies. Before they even fill the container with their delicious superfoods they have close to $4.00 just in packaging costs.
Their capsules are a great choice for people who don’t like the taste of their powders, don’t like to mix up powders or want the convenience of taking them on the go.
Compare Amazing Grass Greens to Other Greens
Not all cereal grasses are created equal. Tray grown wheatgrass juice you find in most juice, smoothie or grocery stores is different from field grown dehydrated wheat grass. In fact, most field grown cereal grasses are different from Amazing Grass.
Amazing Grass is field grown through winter and harvested just once a year. Other grasses are grown in warm climates and cut 7 or more times a year, which results in decreased nutrients.
Why is Amazing Grass different?
Because it is grown in THE BEST soil for growing cereal grasses. Just as oranges grow best in Florida and California, cereal grasses grow best in the Midwest. Soil scientists have known for years that the central plains of the Midwest have some of the most fertile soils in the world. In fact, most of the production for wheat and other cereal grains come from the Midwest. Cereal Grasses planted in the fall and grown through the cold winter are nutritionally superior to crops grown elsewhere because the grass develops a huge root structure that acts as a sponge to absorb nutrients in the mineral-rich soil.
Amazing Grass is certified organic and they don’t use herbicides or pesticides. Their belief of putting back more into the soil than they take out ensures the most nutrient-rich cereal grasses you can get. Amazing Grass includes organic (red hard winter) wheat grass, organic barley grass, organic alfalfa, organic oat grass and organic rye grass. All grasses grow longer and cost more to produce, but the quality, superior nutrition and resulting health benefits are definitely worth it. Their proprietary harvesting procedures and safeguards ensures the lowest plate counts, coliforms, yeast and mold counts available with no irradiation.
Amazing Grass is from farms, not factories.
Their Difference: The Amazing Grass Proprietary Process
- Their grass is harvested just prior to the jointing stage. Their cereal grasses are harvested only ONCE a year during their nutritional peak.
- The grass is direct cut and moved quickly (usually within an hour) to a specially designed low temperature dehydrator.
- Cell temperature remains below 107°F, to retain maximum levels of heat sensitive nutrients.
- The dehydrated leaves are cooled and pressed into pellets. This decreases the surface area and reduces oxidation and loss of nutrients.
- The pellet are filled in pharmaceutical grade "super sacks" and nitrogen packed to limit oxidation and nutrient loss.
- Their pellets are stored frozen below 0°F and only bottled as they need them.
- Rigorous quality control methods and independent lab verifications ensures the safest and most nutritious wheat grass, barley grass, oat grass, rye grass and alfalfa available anywhere.
- They use the highest quality pharmaceutical grade PETE (#1) and HDPE (#2) containers packed with nitrogen and an air tight heat induction seal.
- All these safeguards mean you receive their bottled products nearly as fresh and nutritious as the day they were harvested on their farm in Kansas.
The Amazing Grass Story How they got started….
Amazing Grass' Story They started this business out of their garage (actually Brandon's dining room table) in San Francisco, California in 2002. Two guys with a desire to build a grass roots business that compliments their passion for the outdoors and a healthy lifestyle. Both founders, Brandon and Todd, spent years in the "corporate grind" and realized how stress from the workday and poor eating habits adversely affected the lives of the typical American. They became convinced that phrases "I'm exhausted" and "I think I'm coming down with something" directly reflected that daily stress and inadequate diet.
Co-workers at a previous job, Todd noticed that Brandon was always drinking this "green drink" and seemed immune from the office flu and the contagious mid-afternoon yawn. It wasn't long before Brandon was supplying Todd and the rest of the office with wheat grass. After trying it for a couple weeks and picking up a book on it's incredible benefits, Todd became a true believer. As word spread, Brandon developed a long list of friends hooked on wheat grass that often called or stopped by his house to replenish their supply. The number of wheat grass believers grew so fast that Brandon's supply couldn't keep up. His freezer was getting pillaged on a daily basis. (They know this sounds like a scene from "Cops", but they swear its just wheat grass!)
With the help of a college class from Cal Poly SLO, their families and great friends (not to mention the support of their "AMAZING" and patient…OK… extremely patient wives), they started their company called "Amazing Grass". Amazing Grass' goal is to educate the world and share the amazing benefits of wheat grass that are coveted by those who are already in "the know." It is their passion to help people live healthier lives. They pledge to always listen to their customers, and work to constantly improve, create and offer "healthy" products that are also affordable. It's an amazing adventure to grow this business to reflect their dreams, passions and beliefs.
Today, Amazing Grass offers the most powerful vegetable on earth, consumable in a convenient way that aligns with their hectic lifestyles. They love hearing your stories about how their Amazing Grass products have changed your life. They also encourage their new friends to write us with their stories. The timeless phrase, "you are what you eat", sums up many of the responses. Eat Grass! Get Healthy!
