Blue Monkey - Organic Milled Flax Chia Blend - 12 oz. (340 g)

Carrington Farms Organic Milled Flax Seeds are gluten free, rich in Omega 3 & 6, Fiber and Lignans. Carrington Farms Whole Flax Seeds contain 2800 mg of Omega 3s per serving! What makes Carrington Farms so good? Only the finest seeds are selected and finely sliced, NOT crushed, thereby retaining the maximum nutritional properties. The seeds are laboratory tested many times between the farmer and the package to ensure the highest grade and freshest seed possible. Carrington Farms' Microcleanse process involves the natural cleansing of the seeds without the use of any chemicals or radiation to guarantee maximum freshness and longevity.

Healthy Benefits: Organic Milled flax seed is an excellent source of Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids, "good fats," which have been known to maintain healthy cholesterol and blood sugar levels. In addition, flax seed is high in SDG lignans. These act as both phytoestrogens and antioxidants and may have a balacing effect on hormones. While flax seed is high in fiber it also helps to hydrate hair, skin and nails.

The Carrington Farms Difference

  • Convenient and Portable - Sealed, ready-to-eat, single serve packets need no refrigeration.
  • Unique Milling Process - Carrington Farms' flax seeds are milled by thinly slicing the seed, NOT crushing. Micro-cleanse process purifies flax seeds and enhances freshness.
  • Healthy Benefits - Rich in Omega 3 & 6 EFA's, FIber, Lignans, and Gluten Free.

Health Benefits
What makes flax seed so healthy
Flax comes from the blue-flowered plant crop grown mainly in cool, northern climates such as that of the western Canadian prairies and the northern plains of the US. The omega-3 fatty acid and fiber in flax are nutrients that help keep us healthy and well.

The flax seed is one of the most nutritional seeds on the planet. And while it's not a grain, it has a similar vitamin and mineral profile to grains, but, flax seed is very low in carbohydrates, making it ideal for people who limit their intake of starches and sugars. And its combination of healthy fat and high fiber content make it a great food for weight loss and maintenance -- many dieters have found that flax seed has been a key to keeping them feeling satisfied.

Flax seed is high in most of the B vitamins, magnesium, and manganese, but this little seed is just getting started. Omega-3 fatty acids are a key force against inflammation in our bodies. Mounting evidence shows that inflammation plays a part in many chronic diseases including heart disease, arthritis, asthma, diabetes, and even some cancers. This inflammation is enhanced by having too little Omega-3 intake (as found in fish, flax, and walnuts), especially in relation to Omega-6 fatty acid intake (in such oils as soy and corn oil). In the quest to equalize the ratio of these two kinds of oils, flax seed can be a real help.

Most of the oil in flax seeds is alpha linolenic acid (ALA). ALA is an Omega-3 which is a precursor to the fatty acids found in salmon and other fatty cold-water fish (called EPA and DHA). Because not everyone is able to easily convert ALA into EPA and (especially) DHA, it is best not to rely solely on flax for your Omega-3 intake, but ALA also has good effects of its own, and definitely helps in the Omega 3/6 balance.

Flax Seed is High in Fiber: You'd be hard-pressed to find a food higher in fiber -- both soluble and insoluble -- than flax. This fiber is probably mainly responsible for the cholesterol-lowering effects of flax. Fiber in the diet also helps stabilize blood sugar, and, of course, promotes proper functioning of the intestines.

Phytochemicals: Flax seed is high in phytochemicals, including many antioxidants. It is perhaps our best source of lignans, which convert in our intestines to substances which tend to balance female hormones. There is evidence that lignans may promote fertility, reduce peri-menopausal symptoms, and possibly help prevent breast cancer. In addition, lignans may help prevent Type 2 diabetes.

Hormonal Effects: Lignans contain phytoestrogens which research has shown to be beneficial.

Tips for flax seed users:

  • Drink plenty of water. There is so much soluble fiber in flax that it is important to drink plenty of water when eating flax products, otherwise constipation may result.
  • Remember to start slowly if you aren't used to a high fiber diet.

Omega 3-s: Get the Fats
Dietary fats make you fat, raise your cholesterol and increase your triglyceride levels, right? The answer may just surprise you. It really depends on the kind of fats you are eating. Some fats, like omega-3 fatty acids, found in foods like Flax Seed, walnuts, canola oil, and some fish (like salmon, sardines, tuna and anchovies) are actually healthy for you. They have been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke while helping to reduce symptoms of hypertension, joint pain, and an array of other ailments.

Most people don't get enough omega-3s through their diet alone. They take in too much of omega-6 fatty acids which are also essential but need to be balanced by omega-3s in the diet. Health and medical issues arise when they are not. In fact, the current ratio of a typical American diet is 20:1 (omega-6: omega-3); however, nutrition experts recommend a ratio of 4:1 (omega-3:omega6). So, how does someone make this happen?

The biggest problem is that many Americans either do not like or are concerned about mercury levels in fish and so do not consume the recommended 2 servings a week. In that case, oftentimes, people try a fish oil supplement. However, there are numerous reports of gastrointestinal issues when fish oil capsules are consumed.

So, what's left? Flaxseed is a rich source of omega-3s and comes in many forms. It is sold as ground or whole seeds or as an oil. All are healthy options to get more omega-3s, but the ground flaxseed also contains 3 grams of fiber per tablespoon. It is high in SDG lignans and it can be sprinkled on cereals, yogurt, oatmeal, baked goods or in smoothies.

So, eat your fats…just make sure they're healthy.

Wonderful. Take the muffin recipe and change the spices, illuminate the sugar, & do it in a microwave safe loaf pan (glass), and you have sandwich bread.
