Tulsi (also known as Holy Basil) is a powerful healing herb that has been revered for centuries in India for its power to relieve stress and boost the body's natural immune system. Organic India is the first company to bring Tulsi to the West as an organic tea. They work with thousands of farmers in India to cultivate the herb using environmentally sustainable methods, restoring vitality to the earth and dignity to its people.
The Tulsi Story: India's "Queen of Herbs"
For more than 5000 years Tulsi (also known as Holy Basil) has been considered India's "Queen of Herbs" and has been revered as one of the most sacred herbs in India, infused with healing power. Hindus view Tulsi (also spelled Tulasi or Thulasi) as a goddess in the form of a plant bestowed with great spiritual and healing powers. According to legend, no amount of gold could outweigh Krishna's power, but a single Tulsi leaf placed on the pan in loving devotion tilted that scale. In India today, Tulsi is still traditionally grown in an earthenware pot in every family home or garden, and the leaves are used to make a delicious and refreshing tea that possesses wonderful health benefits.
As Tulsi traveled west along the early trade routes from the Orient to Europe, it became known to the Christians as "sacred" or "holy" basil as is reflected in its Latin botanical name, Ocimum sanctum. They hailed Tulsi as "The King of Herbs' instead of as a queen, and Holy Basil became routinely included in legends, offerings and worship rituals and was looked on by many as a gift of Christ.
Modern research has classified Tulsi as an adaptogenic herb. Adaptogens have been shown to support the body's natural immune system while relieving the body's negative reaction to stress. Adaptogenic herbs have been used in traditional Ayurvedic and Chinese herbal medicines for thousands of years to promote and maintain wellness. Many adaptogenic herbs have been referred to by herbalists as rejuvenative herbs, qi tonic herbs, rasayanas or restorative herbs. They help the body adapt to environmental, physical and emotional stressors, support normal functions, and restore balance.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do any of their products contain Aristolochia or aristolochic acid?
Side effects relating to some varieties of the Aristolochia species under certain conditions have been documented since the early 1990's. Herbs containing these compounds are primarily used in China and have been banned in many countries of the world, including the United States. We’d like to assure you: Organic India does not use any of the Aristolochia species of herbs, or herbs containing aristolochic acid, in any of their products.
Are their products Kosher?
All of their products are certified Kosher except for Chyawanprash. The ghee used in Chyawanprash comes from a farm that is not certified Kosher.
Are their products gluten-free?
Yes, all of the products including teas, supplements and psyllium are gluten-free.
Are their products Fair Trade?
Yes and no. There are several fair trade certifications available, and each of them is very expensive. They have decided not to pursue certification at this time. However, their labor and trade practices go above and beyond what any certification requires. Organic India was founded with the intention of providing a sustainable livelihood to our farmers in India. They provide their farmers and their families with health care, education and a sustainable method of agriculture.
How many tea bags are in each box?
Do you have a printed catalog?
No they do not. Printed catalogs require too much natural resource to produce, and cannot be updated as they launch new products or add information to existing ones. Their website lists all of the products that they carry.
Can they recommend a product for a particular ailment or illness?
Unfortunately they cannot. They are not doctors and therefore cannot provide diagnoses. Please consult your health care practitioner.
How much caffeine is in their tea?
Most of our teas are caffeine-free. Several do have caffeine, as follows:
Tulsi India Breakfast Tea: 25 mg/serving
Tulsi Green Tea: 12 mg/serving
Tulsi Pomegranate Green Tea: 10 mg/serving
Tulsi Chai Masala Tea - boxed: 12 mg/serving
Tulsi Chai Masala Tea - 1 lb: 20 mg/serving
How long should the tea be steeped?
It's recommended steeping their teas for 3-5 minutes. However, longer steeping times will release more of the herbs' nutritional and healing properties. Some people steep Tulsi tea for up to 20 minutes.
