The Pillars of Hodgson Mill
Hodgson Mill has principals that support their customers and help lift them up. They call these their pillars. They believe in making life better. That starts with making nutritious foods of the highest quality, because they think life's better when you take care of yourself and your health. But they also want that to be a positive experience: it shouldn't be a punishment to eat foods that are good for you.
They look for grains that are of the highest grade, produced domestically wherever available, and purchased in the United States. That's being a good citizen. They use only stoneground milling to ensure, unlike other mills, that their products contain the entire nutritional benefit of the grain. That's being a good Miller. Then they make sure that their products taste great, so you and your family can enjoy the fruits of nature's labors. That's being a good chef. And finally, they try to make life better in their community and our world, starting with a real commitment to solar and wind power at their mill and an award-winning recycling program. That's being a good neighbor.
When you live a great life, you can take on life with a positive, healthy, optimistic attitude and get it done, whatever "it" is. And because they are proud of their products, and want to share them to help the people who buy and depend on them, they invite them to "Have a Grain Day!"
It Started With a Mill. And a Man Named Hodgson.
Alva Hodgson, a pioneering Missouri millwright, and the sturdy water-driven grain mill that came to bear his name: there begins the Hodgson Mill legacy.
Deep in the rugged heart of the Missouri Ozarks, the original mill site came to life in 1837. A second mill, built in 1861, burned down as Missouri endured the chaos of the Civil War. Finally, the sturdy building you see in the picture was constructed in 1882. Sited against a tree-covered limestone bluff, over an abundantly flowing clear spring, it was this fine paddle wheel mill that Alva Hodgson made his own.
A master millwright, Alva Hodgson was an expert in grinding grain. As the mill's business grew, Alva later partnered in the operation with his brother, George. After operating successfully for thirteen years, Alva imported traditional French buhrstones and drew up plans for a more modern turbine-drive mill, and hired an engineer to develop and implement the needed machinery.
The business thrived, and the old Hodgson Mill continued to grind grains through the early decades of the 1900’s, long after founder Alva Hodgson had passed. Alva’s name had become synonymous with the mill itself, and true to his nature, the mill kept working while most traditional stone gristmills across America were shuttered. In 1969, the still-producing mill company became officially known as Hodgson Mill, Inc.
Over the years, as the popularity of naturally milled grains grew, Hodgson Mill enhanced its line of milled flours to begin producing a variety of wholesome, whole-grain products. By the 1970s, interest in natural, non-processed foods was heating up across the country, and the old mill was straining to keep up with orders. Hodgson Mill expanded and modernized its milling facilities in 1976 to keep pace.
Hodgson Mill has come of age in the 21st century, but their roots still lie with the tradition and quality that master millwright Alva Hodgson established so many years ago. They're still stone-grinding grains, taking away nothing, adding nothing, and keeping a tradition of natural goodness.
Alva would be proud.
Commitment Runs In the Family
Hodgson Mill has grown from a local business into a national leader in whole grain products with more than 90 employees, but owners Bob and Cathy Goldstein are still committed to maintaining the close-knit, family business values that made the company a success.
Bob and Cathy came by milling naturally. Bob was raised on a local farm in Effingham, Illinois, where the company headquarters and production facilities are located, and his wife Cathy’s family has been milling grains for five generations.
Cathy attended the University of Illinois to study Agricultural Economics, but put her professional career on hold after the couple was married and started a family. Today Cathy and Bob are the proud parents of six children, and the family is an active member of the local community.
Bob’s journey into the world of grain milling led him to become deeply engaged in the nuts and bolts of Hodgson Mill’s manufacturing and milling operations. His hands-on expertise and insights have been honed by his trips to Switzerland and England to learn from millers with hundreds of years of tradition and experience behind them, and has also journeyed through Italy learning pasta manufacturing in the country where pasta was perfected.
"I'm a gatherer of information," he says, “but I also gather great people for our team who have specific expertise in many different areas of milling and manufacturing.”
Daughter Erin is now carrying Hodgson Mill values into the future as one of the innovative meal creators and writers for the popular Hodgson Mill Recipe Blog.
