Choosing a Naturtint Permanent Shade
Naturtint can be used to create an endless number of styles and looks, all from the comfort of your own home! The ‘Shadow Color Technique’ and ‘Graduation Color’ tutorial videos below demonstrate just two of the looks that can be achieved by blending colors and shades!
Darker - Can go as dark as you like. If you are undecided between 2 colors, go for the lighter shade as it is easier to go darker if the shade isn't exactly right, than to try and color lighter.
Lighter - Naturtint can only lighten hair by one or two shades. For example, if a person's hair color is a 6N (see Fig. 1 & 2 below), then they should not use a colorant lighter than an 8N, 8C or 8G. If you have very grey or white hair, it is best to avoid 10N & 10A (unless mixed with other colors) as they are too light to produce a significant color change.
Covering Grey - Very resistant grey will require 40 minutes development time and the 'Natural' colors are usually the most suitable. Brighter tones such as the Mahogany and Copper tones should be mixed with a Natural tone if applied to grey or white hair. Lighter tones can look more flattering against our skin tone as we age, so don't be afraid to go a shade lighter than your natural color once was.
Ash Tones - Shouldn't generally be used on their own unless you want to tone down hair color, i.e. if a light shade has gone too yellow, orange, brassy, golden, reddish. Otherwise they should be used as "mixer" tone to prevent these unwanted warm tones.
Common Blends - When using 'Natural' shades, if you tend to go too red, golden, brassy, or yellow then blend in an 'Ash' color. For example with 6N, 7N, 8N use 8A or with 9N or 10N, use 10A. To tone down Mahogany (4M, 5M and 7M) colors or if you are using these shades on grey hair, mix with similar number of a Natural color. To mellow Coppers (5C, 7C and 8C) or if you are using these shades on grey hair, mix with similar number of a 'Natural' color.
Color Guidance & Mixing
Most of the Naturtint shades are given a code consisting of a number and then a letter. The number tells you how light or dark a shade is, with 1 being the darkest and 10 the lightest (see Fig. 1). The letter after the number indicates the kind of tone you can expect from the color (see Fig. 2).
The most recent and contemporary 5 shades: 9.31 Sandy Blonde, 7.7 Teide Brown, 7.46 Arizona Copper, 6.66 Fireland, and 2.1 Blue-Black, plus the Naturtint Reflex shades use a slightly different coding system. The 1st number indicates how dark/light the shade is, the 2nd number indicates the secondary color (if applicable) used to produce the shade and the 3rd number is a reference to the addition of a 'splash' of a third color (see Fig. 3). For example, the 7.46 is the same depth of tone as a 7N or a 7G, but the additional colors are copper, with a hint of red.

Can Naturtint be used if the customer has suffered severe allergic reactions to other hair color in the past?
Allergic reactions vary and a skin sensitivity test must be carried out at least 48 hours before application. Naturtint Permanent Hair colorant has been dermatologically tested but in rare cases, reactions can occur. If the customer has previously experienced redness and itching as a result of previous hair colorants then Naturtint Permanent Hair Colorant may be gentle enough to use and if a skin test has been completed with no signs of reaction, the product may be applied. However, if the customer experiences swelling, blistering and/or burning then it is likely that they are allergic to PPD's and a skin test should demonstrate this - if so then the product must not be applied. In these cases, we recommend the use of Naturtint Reflex Non-Permanent Color Rinses, provided a skin test is carried out before use. A skin test is an important precaution before the use of any hair dye but users should be aware that even if a sensitivity test has been carried out, an allergic reaction may still be experienced when the hair is colored. The allergy alert test is not a guarantee of avoiding future allergic reactions. Medical advice should be sought in the case of any doubts.
What are PPD's?
They are p-phenylenediamines found in all permanent and some semi permanent hair colorants with the exclusion of certain hennas. They add color to the hair but are severe skin irritants and in rare cases can provoke severe or extreme reactions. A PPD reaction would typically result in skin swelling, burning and blistering in the region where they are applied. Naturtint Permanent Hair Colorant contains minimum levels of PPD whilst Naturtint Reflex Non-Permanent Color Rinse is free of PPDs. People allergic to PPD or those simply looking to avoid it should also be mindful that PPD has a number of alternatives that carry the same warnings and risk of allergy, such as toluene-2, 5-diamino sulphate and 2-dihydroxyethylamino or derivatives of PPD such as PPD salts and sulphates like N- phenyl-p-phenylenediamine.
Can Naturtint be used by cancer sufferers?
Naturtint has received excellent feedback from customers who have used Naturtint Reflex after their chemotherapy has finished. Significantly, Naturtint Reflex is free from peroxide and PPD as well as ammonia, resorcinol and parabens. It is strongly recommend any such customers seek medical approval before use. Some months after chemotherapy treatment is completed, many customers move on to Naturtint Permanent Hair Colorant but it is strongly recommend that the customer again seeks medical approval as to suitability.
Can you use Naturtint while pregnant?
Many ladies continue to dye their hair during pregnancy and it is a very personal decision to make. Naturtint provides choice. Naturtint Permanent Hair Colorant is free of two key chemicals - ammonia and resorcinol but Naturtint Reflex Non-Permanent Color Rinse contains no ammonia, resorcinol, peroxide or PPD.
Can Naturtint be used on other parts of the body?
Naturtint is not designed for facial or body hair and should not be used on eyebrows or eyelashes.
Can Naturtint be used on top of previously colored hair?
Most customers have used another colorant previous to trying Naturtint and it is suggested wearing that color for 4-6 weeks before applying Naturtint. Naturtint always recommends a strand test before use to ensure the chosen color brings the desired result.
Will Naturtint Permanent Hair Colorant really cover Grey Hair?
Yes, Naturtint Permanent Hair Colorant covers all normal grey hair from the very first application. If your hair is stubborn and resistant to color, you should leave the color to develop for the full 40 minutes.
How do you carry out a skin test?
Cleanse a small area of skin inside the bend of the elbow and behind the ear. In a glass or plastic bowl, mix up a few drops of colorant with equal amounts of developer - do not mix up all of the colorant and developer, a small amount is sufficient. Apply the mixture to the cleansed area of skin, allow the skin to absorb the mixture and then repeat twice more. Leave untouched for 48 hours - if you do not experience any reaction on the skin such as swelling, reddening, blistering, burning or itching, you can use the hair dye. If you have any kind of reaction, however slight, do not use the product.
How do I carry out a strand test?
A strand test can be carried out at the same time as the skin test, using the mixture of colorant and developer that remains. Take a small lock of hair about one inch or 3 centimeters long (just enough strands that you can see the color) and apply the mixture using gloved fingers or a tint brush. Allow the color to develop for 20-30 minutes before rinsing so you can observe the color and decide if you are happy with it. If you have grey hair you can check that this has been successfully colored and if not, you now know that you need to leave the color on for the full 40 minutes of development time.
