About Honest

They Were Thirsty
Seth Goldman, co-founder of Honest Tea, drank a lot of liquids. An active person, Seth was continually in search of the perfect drink to quench his thirst after a run, a game of basketball, or between grad school classes. Yet, Seth found most drinks either too sweet or too tasteless.

Barry Nalebuff, Seth’s professor at the Yale School of Management, found that he and Seth shared a passion for the idea of a less sweet, but flavorful beverage during a class discussion of a Coke vs. Pepsi case study. They agreed that there were tons of sweet options and lots of watery drinks, but in 1994, there was nothing in between to fill the void.

Fast forward to ’97. Seth goes for a run in New York City with a college friend who used to concoct juice drinks with him after class. As they found themselves doing the same beverage mixing after the run, Seth knew then that if he was going to quench his thirst for good, he would have to create the drink himself. He e-mailed Barry to see if he was still excited about the idea.

Timing was everything. Barry had just returned from India where he had been analyzing the tea industry for a case study. Barry had even come up with a name to describe a bottled tea that was made with real tea leaves–Honest Tea. When Seth heard the name, the simmering idea began to boil–it was the perfect name for a brand that would strive to create honest relationships with its customers, suppliers and the environment.

Seth took a deep breath, quit his job at Calvert mutual funds, and started brewing batches of tea in his kitchen. Five weeks after taking the plunge, he brought thermoses of tea and a recycled bottle with a mock-up label to Fresh Fields (Whole Foods Market). The buyer ordered 15,000 bottles, and Seth and Barry were in business–if they could figure out how to make that much tea. They did, and they’re still at it 18 years later.

In March 2011, The Coca-Cola Company purchased Honest Tea after an initial 40% investment in 2008, which helped expand the distribution of Honest beverages. Today, Honest Tea is run as an independent business unit and their Honest Teas, Honest Kids, Honest Fizz, Honest Summer Refreshers, and Honest Freshly Brewed iced teas can be found in more than 100,000 stores across United States. The dream that took root in Seth’s kitchen in 1998 became a company that just celebrated its 18th anniversary. Seth continues to run the business as the Co-Founder and TeaEO Emeritus in Bethesda, MD with the same passion towards health, the environment, and social responsibility.


Mission

Fair Trade Certified
In 2014 they paid $200,124 back to their tea and sugar sourcing communities in the form of fair trade premiums. These funds have helped to establish improved farming, healthcare and education initiatives.

USDA Organic
In 2014 they purchased 6,722,336 pounds of organic ingredients, meaning they are grown without synthetic chemicals and pesticides, genetically modified organisms or irradiation.

The Honest Office
They’ve converted a former mortgage broker’s office into an open area workspace right in the heart of downtown Bethesda, MD – where Honest Tea was born in 1998. Employees enjoy access to the Metro and the Capital Crescent Trail, as well as lots of natural light; and by incorporating upcycled materials and (gently) used furniture into their space, they’ve helped protect Planet Earth a little bit too.


How They Sweeten Their Beverages

Honest specializes in offering beverages that range from unsweetened and zero grams of sugar to ones that are "just a tad sweet." Their teas, juice drinks and sodas use a variety of natural sweeteners.

Fair Trade Organic Cane Sugar
The Fair Trade, organic cane sugar they use in some of their products, as indicated on the label, comes from Paraguay. Fair Trade premiums help to fund community development projects that have included a local school, industrial farming equipment and a new ambulance. They source their organic cane sugar from growers in South America.

Organic Honey
They source organic wildflower honey from the Brazilian rainforest. Local beekeepers place hives in a forage area and return several weeks later, carrying out the hives and transferring them to organic honey consolidators for extraction.

Organic Fruit Juice
In 2013, they removed the organic cane sugar from all Honest Kids varieties. They found a way to deliver the same great taste by sweetening the juice drinks only with fruit juice.

Stevia
Stevia is a plant originally from South America that has been used as a sugar substitute for hundreds of years. The leaves provide sweetness with zero calories.

Erythritol
Erythritol (pronounced ‘eh-RITH-ri-tol’) is a natural sugar alcohol that has virtually no calories and does not affect blood glucose or insulin levels.

Organic Maple Syrup
Maple syrup is produced by boiling the sap of the maple tree. For years they have sourced the organic maple syrup used in our Assam Black Tea from Coombs Family Farms in Vermont.

Organic Agave Syrup
Agave syrup is derived from a sweet sap that occurs naturally in the stem of the agave plant. The species is native to Mexico and South America.
