Keratin can dry out your hair and make it brittle...
False. There are numerous reasons why hair might break including mechanical (brushing, elastic bands), chemical (colouring, bleaching, hi-lighting, chlorine, salt) and environmental causes (UVA/UVB degradation). These processes reduce the moisture content, strength and flexibility of the hair leaving it dry and brittle.
Hair damage starts with degradation of the outer cuticle layer of the hair shaft which is comprised of keratin proteins. When the cuticle becomes damaged it becomes brittle, the scales of the cuticle open and separate, leaving the inner cortex unprotected.
How does keratin repair hair?
Since keratin is the primary building block of the hair cuticle, putting keratin back into the hair is the only way to repair it. Keratin penetrates the hair cuticle and bonds to the brittle, broken scales helping to restore strength and moisture, and repair the hair while also preventing further damage.
The Keratin Repair category is formulated with an abundant amount of keratin to make your hair visibly stronger, shinier and healthier with each use.
It is not possible to overuse keratin.
You should switch your shampoo and conditioner as your hair can get used to them...
False. Contrary to popular belief, hair doesn't "get used to" products. Build-up and waxy residues from cheaply formulated, non-professional products can weigh down the hair making it unmanageable and lackluster. Continued use of your favorite professional quality shampoo and conditioner will ensure you always get great results without the build-up.
Washing your hair everyday will rob it of its natural oils...
False. Many people like to wash their hair everyday as it refreshes and optimizes their style. As long as you're using a professional shampoo that is not formulated with salt and is loaded with great ingredients like silk and keratin proteins, panthenol and herbal extracts, your hair will not only retain its natural oils but will benefit with the boost of proteins and moisturizers that get depleted from environmental stress, hot tools and colour treatments.
Silicones are bad for your hair...
False. Found in many hair products including conditioners and smoothing serums, silicones help prevent frizz and provide hair strands with the necessary barrier to guard against humidity. They can also add shine, help to detangle the hair, provide long lasting conditioning and smoothing benefits and help split ends disappear. There are many different types of silicones and with careful choice by the manufacturer, the right silicones can add enormous benefit to the hair without any negative impact.
All AG Hair products are carefully formulated and are 100% guaranteed not to weigh down the hair or cause build-up.
Frequently Asked Questions
What makes AG different?
Inspired by the world of fashion, hair and culture, AG creates a new standard of beauty through products that are crafted to deliver on their promise. Since 1989, AG Hair has become a name synonymous with integrity and a brand whose devotees can’t help but Use. Love. Repeat.
Born from a passion for quality, they manufacture their hair products themselves, ensuring only the highest quality ingredients go into them. What they leave out are ingredients that aren’t good for you, like salt (sodium chloride), paba, parabens and DEA, and processes like animal testing.
Left are products that perform, and that offer hope for women around the world. A portion from every bottle sold goes to AG’s Women Leading Change Foundation to build schools for underprivileged girls in Africa.
USE. LOVE. REPEAT.
Where are AG products made?
AG Hair products are proudly hand-made in their own manufacturing facility in beautiful Vancouver, British Columbia, home to crystal-clear mountain spring water, vast forests and fresh air.
How does AG develop its products?
AG hair products are first conceptualized collaboratively by their sales and marketing team, hair stylists and trend advisors. Next, their dedicated in-house research and development team begins the meticulous process of formulating, testing and fine-tuning the products. This process can take up to 12 months and offers the unique benefit of manufacturing themselves, with complete control over the concept, ingredient choice, formulation and final product. In an industry where in-house manufacturing is increasingly rare, this offers AG a point of difference from other professional brands.
What does AG stand for?
When John and Lotte Davis started AG in 1989, it was called Advance Group Professional Hair Care Products. Now, they’re simply known as AG Hair.
Is it true that salt (sodium chloride) can be found as a thickener in many shampoos?
Not just many, but most shampoos contain table salt, or sodium chloride, used as a cheap thickening agent. Salt dries out your hair and scalp in the same way that swimming in the ocean does and is therefore not a desirable ingredient. All AG shampoos are manufactured without adding salt as a thickening agent. They simply use less water and a higher concentration of ingredients that are beneficial to your hair, and provide you with instantly discernable results.
Are all AG products gluten-free?
Yes, AG products are completely gluten-free. Having said this, they strongly suggest that individuals diagnosed with Celiac Disease or who have any concerns whatsoever to consult with their physician prior to using any cosmetic product.
You may notice some of their products contain ingredients such as wheat and oat protein. Through a process called hydrolysis, they extract the amino acids from these proteins. Once they have been extracted, based on FDA and International standards, they are considered gluten-free.
Does AG use parabens in their products?
AG Hair does not use parabens in their products (parabens are used as preserving agents and have been shown to be a concern to human health). At AG they use gentle cosmetic grade preservatives with a world wide safety approval.
What is PABA and why does AG choose not to use it?
PABA, or para-aminobenzoic acid, was one of the first sunblocks that became widely available for purchase in the 1970’s. PABA has been found to be an irritant to the skin and as a precaution, AG Hair has chosen to use alternative ingredients like Benzophenone-4 or Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate.
What is DEA and why does AG choose not to use it?
DEA is a foaming agent used in shampoos and has been placed on a watch list by the FDA. AG Hair has proactively removed this ingredient from all of their shampoos and replaced it with a naturally derived ingredient sourced from Rapeseed Oil.
What are sulfates and do AG products contain them?
Sulfates are common cleansing and sudsing agents found in most shampoos, soaps and even toothpastes. Sulfate-free shampoos use different cleansing agents that are considered to be milder than sulfates but achieve the same cleansing effect. They are also significantly more expensive than cleansers formulated with sulfates.
AG users have been very satisfied with the natural and gentle coconut-derived sulfates as they have been strong staples in their brand since 1989. They are formulated to be gentle on the skin and are guaranteed not to strip colour from colour-treated hair.
AG has eight coconut-derived sulfate shampoos: Tech Two Protein Shampoo, Renew Clarifying Shampoo, Control Dandruff Shampoo, Thick Volume Shampoo and Xtramoist Moisture Shampoo, Peppermint Wash Invigorating Shampoo, Sterling Silver Toning Shampoo and Tech One Lightweight Shampoo.
For those users who prefer a sulfate-free formula they have four in their line: Colour Savour Sulfate-Free Shampoo, Recoil Sulfate-Free Shampoo, Smooth Sulfate-Free Argan Shampoo and Fast Food Sulfate-Free Shampoo.
Are AG shampoos safe for my colour-treated hair?
Yes. All AG shampoos are guaranteed colour-safe and are formulated without adding salt, sodium chloride, as a thickening agent. They use a blend of natural herbal ingredients that soothe and protect hair. Their shampoos contain gentle coconut derived surfactants that are pH balanced and cleanse hair without stripping colour.
Are AG products safe for use after a keratin treatment?
Yes, since AG products are formulated without sodium chloride they are safe to use after a keratin treatment.
Does AG test on animals?
No, none of their products are tested on animals, and in-fact, they are a PETA-approved company. (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals).

The AG Story
After an early career in hairdressing in England, John Davis moved to Vancouver and met his partner in life and business, Lotte, who was then fully immersed in retail merchandising and design. It wasn’t long before they combined John’s expertise in hair styling and product performance, with Lotte’s creative and marketing background, founding AG Hair in 1989.
Seeing an opportunity for better quality hair products within the salon industry, they began formulating their own, using only the best ingredients in abundant proportions to ensure their products delivered on the promise. They started by filling bottles by hand out of their Vancouver home. Demand grew faster than they could have anticipated, and it was not long before they moved their operation into a full scale manufacturing facility. Today AG can be found in thousands of salons around the world.
AG still manufactures its own products in Vancouver, and the same entrepreneurial, family-owned spirit that made the company successful from the start is very much a part of AG’s culture today.
A portion from every bottle sold goes to AG's Women Leading Change Foundation to build schools for underprivileged girls in Africa.
The Women Leading Change Story
As a girl growing up in the sixties, AG Hair’s co-founder Lotte Davis experienced firsthand the impact education could have on a woman’s life. While building AG Hair with her husband John, she made sure her own daughters would realize their potential through education. With the business having achieved success, and both her girls pursuing their dreams, she felt it was time to turn her attention to helping less fortunate girls pursue theirs. Having been born in Africa, she knew she had to go back and start there.
The fierce determination of the girls and women she met in Africa to change the world they inherited inspired Lotte further. Through AG Hair, she set out to build a foundation to help these girls become future leaders of change.
AG’s Women Leading Change (WLC) Foundation builds a school a year in Sub-Saharan Africa so that some of the most marginalized girls on earth can start to contribute to the economic wellbeing of their communities. Since 2008, WLC has built five schools and raised almost $1,000,000. In 2012 AG initiated its scholarship program to award girls who showed outstanding academic performance and financial hardship with a full university education scholarship. A portion of the proceeds from every AG product sold goes toward Women Leading Change.
AG Hair provides the administration, marketing and web development support so that 100% of donations can go directly to the projects in Africa.
Since WLC’s inception, AMREF, also known as the Flying Doctors, has been our partner in Africa, ensuring the success and sustainability of each of our projects. Since 1957, AMREF has been and remains the leading African health organization, based in Africa and run by Africans.
Educated girls make better choices that contribute to the overall health and economic stability of their communities, villages and ultimately their country.
By Educating Girls They Will:
- Create Opportunity
- 50% of the population in underdeveloped countries are women; they are largely not employed in meaningful or paid work.
- In developing countries, educating all their people, not just half of them, vastly improves economic growth.
- Educating women to earn an income doubles the workforce, creates better gender equality and increases overall wealth.
- Reduce Poverty
- Women bear almost all responsibility for meeting basic family needs, yet they are systematically denied the resources, information and freedom to fulfill this responsibility.
- Once educated, a woman can provide for her family and will invest 90 percent of her earnings into supporting her family, as compared to only 30 to 40 percent for a man.
- One extra year of primary school boosts girls’ eventual wages by 10 to 20 percent. An extra year of secondary school boosts them by 15 to 25 percent.
- Improve Health
- One-quarter to one-half of girls in developing countries become mothers before age 18.
- Medical complications from pregnancy are the leading cause of death among girls ages 15 to 19 worldwide.
- When a girl in the developing world receives 7 or more years of education, she marries 4 years later and has 2.2 fewer children.
- Smaller families with more mature mothers lead to healthier babies, healthier pregnancies and a lower risk of HIV and death.
WLC's Current Project: Patongo, Northern Uganda - 2013
History: In 1986, a local warlord named Joseph Kony formed the Lords Resistance Army and began to wage a senseless and violent war in Northern Uganda with his band of rebels. For 22 years, he remained largely uncontested by the government. These rebels abducted and brainwashed young boys and girls, forcing them to become boy soldiers and child brides. The government of Uganda responded by building walled camps to protect the people. Families abandoned their homes to move into these camps, and a whole generation was born and raised here without an education, and without knowing how to provide for themselves.
The project: Over the next year Patongo School will be completely rebuilt from its existing but dilapidated shell to provide functioning classrooms, latrines, dining hall, kitchen and library for the 1600 students who attend every day.
