This is a natural preservative from a soy based vitamin E where there is NO soy protein. The protein has been removed.
Does SunButter have to be refrigerated?
It is recommended that it be refrigerated after opening to help maintain freshness. Preference is applicable.

Is SunButter healthier than peanut butter?
SunButter is naturally good for you. It does contain 1/3 less saturated fat than peanut butter. It does have double the fiber and the same amount of protein. It is naturally higher in Vitamin E and contains no trans fats.
Do you have a sugar-free SunButter?
Their organic SunButter is sugar and salt free.
I won't buy it unless you put it in glass jars. Will you make the change?
Their jars are BPA free. Manufacturing with glass poses many challenges and the cost would be prohibitive. Did you know that it takes more energy to produce a glass jar than the plastic jar that they currently use? Their jar is also recyclable.

My expiration date is past, is it safe to eat?
You are safe to give it a try. Even though they put a date on the jar, more often than not it is still good to eat. There are no ingredients in SunButter that are harmful or will make you sick. If it tastes rancid, then you know to toss it.
Do you use sunflower seeds that are grown in the U.S.?
Yes, nearly all the sunflower seeds they use are grown in North Dakota. Some, but very few are grown in Minnesota and South Dakota. They do not use any other origins.
Do you sell their roasted sunflower seeds?
No, they do not sell their sunflower seeds.
My cookies turned green?
When substituting SunButter in your existing recipe, you may have to reduce the baking soda/powder by approx. 1/3 to start. The chlorogenic acids (chlorophyll) in sunflower seeds react with the baking soda/powder when baked causing the green color when the product cools down. Depending on the recipe, even a splash of lemon juice could help.

SunButter is a subsidiary of Red River Commodities, a processor of sunflower seed for the snack and bakery industries for more than 20 years. Their processing plant in Fargo, North Dakota is a peanut-free facility, and products are tested on a regular basis. They grind specially selected and roasted sunflower seed into a nutritionally packed spread that is a direct peanut butter substitute, allowing for a great tasting, peanut-free and tree nut-free food.
Red River Commodities, the parent company of SunGold Foods, Inc., enjoyed a large export market for sunflower kernel for many years. During the late 1990s and early 2000s, many other countries introduced a lower-quality sunflower kernel-available at cheaper prices-quickly making them major suppliers to the export markets. As a result, Red River Commodities began to research new and consistent outlets for their kernel.
In cooperation with the United States Department of Agriculture, Red River Commodities began a two-year project to develop a substitute for peanut butter that would be made from sunflower seeds. In the meantime, Red River Commodities invested in new hybrids, specialized production areas, formed SunGold Foods, Inc. and created a peanut-free and tree-nut free environment at both companies. The substitute for peanut butter became known as SunButter.
Today, SunButter is used in many school lunch programs, including at those schools that have decided to be peanut-free and tree-nut free. It is used as an ingredient in a variety of recipes. SunButter is the largest customer of Red River Commodities for sunflower kernel.
