What are the pouches made of?
HappyFamily pouches are made of a 7-part laminate. The outer layers are proprietary polypropylene and polyethylene blends designed for durability and printability. The middle layer is a bonded aluminum layer, for moisture and vapor impermeability. The inner layer (the only layer that contacts the food) is bonded, virgin, food-grade polypropylene. The food cannot contact the middle aluminum layer.
If there is a tear or puncture in the pouch (caused by a box cutter or damage during transit), will the food be spoiled?
Fortunately, there is little cause for concern, as the puree inside the pouch is formulated, from a food science and food safety perspective, to be very safe, even if compromised. It is true that our purees can grow spoilage organisms (the kind of organisms that cause food to spoil in your home fridge, for example), but that is by design as a ready indicator of off quality. And similarly, by design, the purees cannot grow pathogens, as the low pH inhibits their growth. Fortunately, the spoilage organisms are usually very easy to detect (by changes in color, gas production, or an off taste), and seldom “dangerous” in the same way pathogens are.
Are all Happy Family ingredients organic?
All fruits, vegetables, grains, meats and seasonings in Happy Family products are organic, except for the wild, Alaskan salmon in their 3: Hearty Meals Super Salmon pouch, as there are currently no organic standards for seafood.

How do they test their products?
All HappyFamily products are put on a Positive Release Program, meaning that they are put on QA Hold until they have passed all of their food safety testing, before they are released for sale.
Do you need to refrigerate Happy Family products to keep the probiotics viable?
You do not need to refrigerate the probiotics. They become live and active when mixed with liquid. The technology for freeze drying probiotics has improved tremendously over the past 5 years or so. Now, you can buy probiotic supplements that do not have to be refrigerated. Happy Baby has tested Happybellies cereal after 9 months shelf life and find hundreds of millions (at least 450M) of live and active cultures per 14 gram serving. They use the same strains that are found naturally in breast milk, only at higher concentrations.
