Why Does BPA-Free Matter?
Bisphenol A (commonly referred to as BPA)-is a carbon-based synthetic compound that interferes with your hormones in a detrimental way, and is proven to be particularly damaging to the health of babies and young children. In other words, BPA isn't something you want anywhere near your mouth, let alone your child's. And yet it's commonly found in hard plastics like those used to produce water bottles, food packaging and even your typical toothbrushes. Radius can assure you that their products do not contain BPA. Never have. Never will. And, on the subject of unnecessary nasties, Radius products are also free from latex, phthalate, glutens, and non-FDA-approved colors and dyes.
Carefully Crafted by an Architect to be Better by Design
The architects who designed the Radius range of toothbrushes are professional sticklers for elegant design. Their first (r)evolutionary product, the Radius Original, is now displayed at the Smithsonian Institute National Design Museum. From there, they expanded their products to encompass a range of personal care and travel essentials that combine function and beauty in just the same way.
Just like other everyday products that have "evolved" through beautiful, functional design (think Dyson vacuum cleaners and Lumbar chairs), Radius products are totally unique. Each one is devised for a specialized purpose, utilizing different materials and one-of-a-kind manufacturing techniques-because refining and evolving the tools of your daily life is what they're all about.
Radius-Green for the Right Reasons
Radius takes a holistic approach to designing and manufacturing their products, examining every step of the process-from prototyping and manufacturing to distribution and disposal-to ensure it's rooted in sustainable decisions that reduce their carbon footprint.
Manufacturing right here in the USA, in their own Radius factory, gives them complete control over production from start to finish, ensuring quality stays where they want it to be-the best of the best. They make, package and ship all their own products small batch-style on low-energy machines, recycling imperfect items and eliminating waste as much as possible. Materials are hand-selected to ensure that no heavy metals or carcinogenic substances find their way into the products. Primarily they use bioplastics, which are derived from renewable biomass sources (like vegetable oils and timber), agricultural byproducts, or even used plastic bottles. They're better for the environment, as well, requiring less fossil fuels and energy to produce (resulting in fewer greenhouse gases).
In 2011, they took their environmentally conscious ethics to the next level-investing in 50,000 kilowatt solar collectors for their factory, which allow them to generate 67% of their electrical power from the sun.
Lasting Longer Than the Average
Radius toothbrushes and products are designed to outlast most run-of-the-mill alternatives, thereby producing less waste. For instance, their Original toothbrush has 300% more bristles than an average toothbrush, making it effective for up to nine months compared to the average three months. The Source toothbrush, on the other other hand, allows the user to replace worn heads with a new one when necessary, eliminating the need to throw away and replace the entire brush. Their impressive longevity is due to a combination of hard-wearing materials and smart design, which prevents the bristles from wearing down so quickly. You save money, and together you and Radius help reduce energy consumption and waste in landfills by decreasing the need to manufacture more products.
Back to the Earth
What happens after a Radius design is spent is also a concern of theirs. The thought of their products and their packaging sitting in a landfill makes them cringe, which is why they always consider the end of a product's life before they begin making it. Not only do they re-purpose recycled materials to create their brushes, holders and cases, where possible they make them compostable, biodegradable and 100% recyclable, too.
The Radius Story
An unlikely beginning... Their story begins on the pristine sandy beaches of Tortola, British Virgin Islands, where the idea for their (r)evolutionary Radius Original was dreamed up by two architects with an insatiable love for clever design. Kevin Foley and James O'Halloran believed even the most everyday products could be refined and improved, starting with the humble toothbrush.
From their CEO Saskia Foley to the hard-working employees in their solar-powered factory, Radius is proudly women-owned and family-run. They thrive thanks to the team of dedicated, smart, close-knit individuals behind the scenes and value the contribution of each and every one of them. In fact, at Radius HQ, they're more like family than colleagues.
