When Preserve set out to design a cutting board, we wanted to address Preserve own frustrations with existing plastic boards. First, we textured the surface to provide better gripping. The texture also hides knife marks so the board looks good for years. Then we added a curved handle to keep the board stable during chopping and aid in transferring your food from board to bowl.

Like Preserve other kitchen products, Preserve cutting boards have incredible staying power. They are durable enough to last generations, and functional enough to be everyday essentials. And because they are recyclable, they can live on even after they no longer suit your purposes.

Those are the principles that have driven our company since 1996 and that motivate Preserve to encourage more households to choose Preserve 100% recycled and recyclable products over conventional products.
Preserve plastic products are made from #5 polypropylene plastic collected from individuals via our Gimme 5 program and from companies like Stonyfield Farm®. We take this plastic, sort it, clean it, test it, recycle it, and turn it into new Preserve products.
Choosing Preserve Plastic (in the form of a toothbrush or razor, for example) means a sizeable reduction in greenhouse gases emitted, and significantly less water, energy, oil, natural gas, and coal used in making plastic.
How did we calculate these numbers?
Preserve uses a tool known as a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to assess the environmental impact of our materials, products, and services. Life Cycle Assessment is a tool used to compare the environmental impact of a product or system’s entire life cycle, from raw material sourcing to manufacture to disposal. Or more simply, an LCA measures the impact from the beginning to the end: including transporting the source material for Preserve Plastic, making Preserve products, getting the product to the store and your doorstep, and finally, what happens to the product when you are done with it.
Polypropylene, the plastic that Preserve’s products are made from, is known to be a safe food-grade material and to create packaging and products that have a low environmental impact. To better understand the environmental impacts of recycled polypropylene, Preserve purchased Life Cycle Inventory data on Preserve own recycled polypropylene and virgin polypropylene from PE Americas, a consulting firm, which uses GaBi 4 Life Cycle Assessment software. GaBi 4 is known for its accurate and up to date data sets.
These Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) datasets detail the inputs and outputs of recycled and virgin polypropylene – everything used to make polypropylene as well as all the waste created by the manufacturing process (including water usage, energy usage, pollutants, etc.). Using these datasets we were able to understand the environmental impact differences between virgin polypropylene and Preserve particular process for recycling yogurt cups shipped from the middle of the United States, 1500 miles, to our reprocessor.

These numbers were derived from average data for the US, so there are likely differences between Preserve’s specific recycling processes and the industry average. There are many assumptions involved when calculating environmental impact, such as machine efficiency, the types of trucks used to transport the plastic to be recycled, and how full those trucks are. Preserve reduced these numbers by 20% for Preserve Plastic to account for these differences. Preserve is confident in these numbers since our recycling process is founded on our steady and reliable recycled polypropylene stream.
