Why Lafe's Doesn't Use Fragrances in Their Baby Products
A study out from the New England Journal of Medicine shows that "repeated topical use of products containing lavender oil and/or tea tree oil may cause prepubertal gynecomastia, a rare condition resulting in enlarged breast tissue in boys prior to puberty, and for which a cause is seldom identified."
Part of the reason we keep our products fragrance-free is because of the growing concern that essential oils - even ones as seemingly benign as lavender and tea-tree oils - may carry a significant enough level of estrogenic activity that they affect children. This new study is an indication of the importance of clean and simple formulations in any product for children. Therefore, Lafe's has created clean-smelling baby products without adding anything to the mix, and will continue to do so, especially in light of studies like this.

For Lafe, pursuing his vision of empowering people to better health was the natural choice - it comes from his roots. During his boyhood in South Dakota, Lafe's mother was stricken with rheumatic fever. With her health at stake, she adapted the family's lifestyle to include natural foods from the land. She instilled in Lafe an inherent desire to avoid chemicals and make healthy choices based this simple adage: "if you can't pronounce it, avoid it." (BTW, Lafe's mother, whose life expectancy was 40, is now in her late 80's.)
As a child, Lafe grew up learning the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle at an early age. His mother was an avid reader of Prevention magazine, and remembers her quoting Adele Davis regularly. She put the family on a natural foods diet. "She made sure all our vegetables came from their backyard garden and meat came from the family farm, all raised naturally," Lafe remembers. Lafe ground the whole wheat his mother used for cooking on a hand crank stone grinder with wheat purchased from a local farmer. Eating garden vegetables, thirteen grain whole wheat bread and cookies and, being the "only kid on the block who didn't eat processed foods--white bread, potato chips or soda pop," was the kind of healthy lifestyle Lafe grew accustomed to.
During his early career, Lafe worked as an advocate for social change - from equal housing to voting rights. The work involved teaching empowerment skills to low and moderate income families to assert their political rights with respect to issues around social justice and equality. Lafe worked in South Dakota, Arkansas, York and Texas with various different advocacy projects. Although the selling of ideas and concepts was very rewarding, pay was meager and didn't sustain a young family. Lafe decided to apply those same skills in the private sector. The move to marketing products that empower people to take charge of their health and wellness was a natural transition.
With the growing holistic health movement, Lafe began representing a line of supplements, Chinese herbs, essential oils and natural personal care products. In 1992, with a $15,000 family loan, Lafe launched Discount Deodorant Stones offering a variety of natural deodorants. As demand grew, Lafe soon realized that offering the purest, highest quality ingredients meant he needed more control over product integrity. In 1997, he began his own manufacturing operation - based exclusively in the U.S. - using completely natural and paraben-free formulations. With 30% annual growth, across both domestic and international markets, Lafe's now offers a wide array of personal care lines including natural deodorants, foot and babycare.
Throughout his many endeavors, Lafe remains steadfast in his commitment to giving back to the world community. Today, through his 1% Project, Lafe donates one percent of his company's profits to support breast cancer prevention and environmental awareness.
