Vitamin Information

Vitamin A
Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin with major functions in the body including helping cells reproduce normally-a process called differentiation (cells that have not properly differentiated are more likely to undergo pre-cancerous changes). It is also required for vision; vitamin A maintains healthy cells in various structures of the eye and is required for the transduction of light into nerve signals in the retina.

Vitamin D
The fat-soluble vitamin D's most important role is maintaining blood levels of calcium, which it accomplishes by increasing absorption of calcium from food and reducing urinary calcium loss. Both effects keep calcium in the body and therefore spare the calcium that is stored in bones. When necessary, vitamin D transfers calcium from the bone into the bloodstream, which does not benefit bones. Although the overall effect of vitamin D on the bones is complicated, some vitamin D is necessary for healthy bones and teeth.Vitamin E is an antioxidant that protects cell membranes and other fat-soluble parts of the body, such as low-density lipoprotein (LDL; "bad" cholesterol) cholesterol, from damage.

Vitamin B12
Vitamin B12 is is a water-soluble vitamin needed for normal nerve cell activity, DNA replication, and production of the mood-affecting substance SAMe (S-adenosyl-L-methionine). Vitamin B12 acts with folic acid and vitamin B6 to control homocysteine levels. An excess of homocysteine is associated with an increased risk of heart disease, stroke, and potentially other diseases such as osteoporosis and Alzheimer's disease.

Pantothenic Acid
Pantothenic acid, also called vitamin B5, is a water-soluble vitamin involved in the Kreb's cycle of energy production and is needed to make the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. It is also essential in producing, transporting, and releasing energy from fats. Synthesis of cholesterol (needed to manufacture vitamin D and steroid hormones) depends on pantothenic acid. Pantothenic acid also activates the adrenal glands.1 Pantethine-a byproduct of pantothenic acid-has been reported to lower blood levels of cholesterol and triglycerides.

Calcium is the most abundant, essential mineral in the human body. Of the two to three pounds of calcium contained in the average body, 99% is located in the bones and teeth. Calcium is needed to form bones and teeth and is also required for blood clotting, transmission of signals in nerve cells, and muscle contraction. The importance of calcium for preventing osteoporosis is probably its most well-known role.

Iodine is a trace mineral needed to make thyroid hormones, which are necessary for maintaining normal metabolism in all cells of the body.

Magnesium is an essential mineral to the human body. It is needed for bone, protein, and fatty acid formation, making new cells, activating B vitamins, relaxing muscles, clotting blood, and forming adenosine triphosphate (ATP; the energy the body runs on). The secretion and action of insulin also require magnesium.

Zinc is an essential mineral that is a component of more than 300 enzymes needed to repair wounds, maintain fertility in adults and growth in children, synthesize protein, help cells reproduce, preserve vision, boost immunity, and protect against free radicals, among other functions.

Copper is an essential trace element present in the diet and in the human body. It is needed to absorb and utilize iron. It is also part of the antioxidant enzyme, superoxide dismutase (SOD). Copper is needed to make adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy the body runs on. Synthesis of some hormones requires copper, as does the synthesis of collagen (the "glue" that holds connective tissue together). In addition, the enzyme, tyrosinase, which plays a role in the production of skin pigment, requires copper to function.

is an essential trace mineral needed for healthy skin, bone, and cartilage formation, as well as glucose tolerance. It also helps activate superoxide dismutase (SOD)-an important antioxidant enzyme.

Chromium is an essential trace mineral that helps the body maintain normal blood sugar levels.

Lutein is an antioxidant in the carotenoid family (a group of naturally occurring fat-soluble pigments found in plants). Lutein is the primary carotenoid present in the central area of the retina called the macula.

About Carlson Labs

Providing the Highest Quality Nutritional Supplements
For more than 50 years, Carlson Laboratories has been recognized as an innovator and leading educator in the field of high-quality nutritional supplements. The Carlson family's interest in vitamins and minerals began when they experienced the benefits of vitamin E firsthand. Founder Susan Carlson's father suffered from debilitating chest pain that limited his activities and forced him to stop working. He was unable to find relief until he came across the extensive clinical work of Doctors Evan and Wilfrid Shute of Shute Medical Clinic.

After examining him, they suggested he take a specific form of vitamin E. In less than three weeks, he was back to work and looked noticeably better. Susan began extensively researching and was inspired to create her own line of high-quality, all-natural vitamin E. J. R. Carlson Laboratories, Inc. was founded in 1965 with a single product - Key-E 200 IU. The second product, E-Gems 200 IU, was introduced two years later, and other strengths were added shortly after that.

Susan managed the company from her third-floor, walk-up apartment on North Winchester Avenue in Chicago and also worked part-time as a pharmacist in a high-traffic store in Wheeling, Illinois. By 1968, Susan had hired two employees who helped her open a small neighborhood store on Damen Avenue in Chicago. Soon after that, a sales representative was added to the team, and Carlson products began popping up on the shelves of popular health food stores across Chicago. As the brand continued to grow, Susan expanded Carlson into the space next door.

In 1970, the business moved to a larger office space on North Kedzie Avenue, and Susan left her pharmacy position to focus on Carlson full time. Her husband John, who previously worked as the chief water engineer for the city of Chicago, was named the president of Carlson. Within six years, they outgrew the space. With the help of John's architect friend, they found property and built the brand new Carlson headquarters on College Drive in Arlington Heights. Two years later, the operations expanded to the neighboring building.

Today, the headquarters are located at 600 West University Drive in Arlington Heights, and the next generation of Carlson continues to ensure that the Carlson name represents only the highest quality products. John and Susan's daughters - President Carilyn Anderson and Vice President of Marketing Kirsten Carlson - and their dedicated team - are proud to offer more than 250 vitamins, minerals, fish oils, and other supplements designed with your family's unique nutritional needs in mind.

I had ordered this product before from Lucky so when I was out I reordered a larger size. When I received it, the caplets stunk! I could not put one in my mouth. So I called Lucky and ask why these had a strong rancid smell and my first bottle did not. The lady was so nice and did not know but told me not to take and she would get me out a new bottle right away. Sure enough I received the new bottle in 2days, but they also stunk. I called Carlson Labs for explain action and was told sometime one of the soft gels breaks open or cracks and the contense gets on the other pils, including the fish oil! I gave her the lot # off of the bottom of both bottles and she said it more than likely happened in production and was no fault of Luckys handling. But I am most happy at the way the entire thing was handled by Lucky and will not hesitate to order from them again! And the pils really work also, I will continue to order them, and just hold my nose to take!
