Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat criteria does Ecover use for choosing ingredients?
- Never Tested on Animals
- Removes Stuck-on Food for Sparkling Dishes
- Plant-Based & Mineral Ingredients
- Biodegradable & Phosphate-free Formula
- Packaged in Recycled Cardboard
Ecover looks to nature for inspiration, sourcing plant-based and mineral ingredients. Not only can naturally derived ingredients be made into effective cleaning products, they are typically renewable, biodegrade quickly and completely, have a low aquatic toxicity and are gentle to your skin. While there are many definitions, they believe ecological products are in balance with the rest of nature. So Ecover developed a unique model they call the Diamond Model that’s managed by an independent auditor. They care about more than just banning nasty chemicals or understanding how well a product works. They want to understand every part of each product’s journey—from ingredient sourcing to product disposal, and everything in between.
Phosphates - What is the problem with using phosphates?
A phosphate is a molecule that’s often added to detergents to soften water so that the surfactants can clean better. One phosphate isn’t bad, but when they travel in masses to our lakes, ponds, rivers and streams, algae feast on them and eventually die. Then bacteria comes in, feasts on the dead algae while using up all the oxygen in the water. No oxygen, of course, means life cannot survive. That’s very scary… and it’s why Ecover doesn't use phosphates in any of theirr products.
Are Ecover products suitable for vegans and vegetarians?
Yes. All of their products sold in North America are suitable for vegans and vegetarians. Plus they never test on animals – they have a Leaping Bunny on their bottle to prove it.
Is Ecover suitable for my Septic Tank?
Yes. Look for the “safe for septic tank” logo on your favorite Ecover product to check for septic tank safety. If you have a septic tank then you should be using products that can fully degrade. In your tank, there is an anaerobic environment that efficiently decomposes waste, and to keep it healthy you need to make sure you don’t upset it with unwanted chemicals that might throw it out of balance.
Why is each dishwasher tablet individually wrapped?
Dishwasher tablets are fragile things that don’t react well to water in the air; in fact, it causes them to crumble. Ecover wants you to open your box to find tablets, not powder, so they wrap each tablet to keep it safe. Their dishwasher tablet wrappers are made from polypropylene (PP), a simple, stable, non-toxic plastic that can be easily recycled. Each wrapper weighs only 0.3 grams.
All Ecover bottles are made using Plantplastic. This is their proprietary plant-sourced plastic made from sugarcane. Ecover takes sustainably harvested sugarcane and refines it into sugar. The sugar is then fermented and distilled to produce ethanol. The ethanol is dehydrated to produce ethylene, which is polymerized to produce the plastic. They chose sugarcane specifically because sugar drives the fermentation process. By starting with a high sugar plant, the process is much more efficient than using a less sweet plant, like corn or beets.
And they don't stop there. Their bottles are a blend of 75% Plantplastic and 25% post-consumer recycled plastic (PCR). The blend of Plantplastic and PCR material is #2 plastic or high density polyethylene (HDPE)—the same type of plastic used for milk jugs and most detergent bottles. By purchasing and using 25% PCR, they provide the demand for recycled materials that drives the recycling economy. And because the Plantplastic and recycled plastic they use is HDPE, the final bottle can be recycled again in most curbside recycling programs along with your cans and newspapers. Ultimately, using their blend of Plantplastic and PCR in place of petroleum-based plastic allows them to avoid the greenhouse gas emissions and energy use associated with making virgin plastic.
All of Ecover’s products are Leaping Bunny certified. Leaping Bunny is an international certification that assures that no animal testing is done in any phase of product development by the company, its laboratories or suppliers. Because Ecover respects their furry friends.
So, how do they test their formulas? When it comes to new ingredients, they're committed to using alternative tests that guarantee safety for you and your family without harming any animals. One example is in vitro testing, where the test tube can contain cultured cells in place of animal tissue. These cultured cells react the same way skin or eye tissue would react when exposed to an ingredient or formula, and allow them to assess the effects of an ingredient without having to experiment on any cute critters.
Ecover uses a third party to conduct the tests and only use internationally recognized test methodologies. They believe that animals should not be used at all for safety testing; they only use non-animal tests and known ingredients that are proven to be safe.
Science Inspired by Nature
Ecover's scientists have found that fermentation can also be used to make effective ingredients for soap. For example, through fermentation they can turn sugars into alcohols that can be used as solvents—the cleaning agents in many of their formulas that dissolve oils and other stains. And by using nature-inspired chemistry like fermentation, they are able to minimize their impact on the environment. You see, many conventional cleaning processes typically involve high-heat, high-intensity practices to produce ingredients. While these processes can be quicker and cheaper, making ingredients this way requires a lot of energy and can lead to unwanted by-products that can be bad for the environment. Conventional processes can also emit more greenhouse gases and consume more water. So they attempt to limit their use of conventional processes when they can.
At Ecover, they like to ask: what would nature do? After all, nature has a pretty clever way of doing things. So, much like nature only uses the materials, heat or light that are naturally available to grow plants, Ecover is inspired to use low heat, renewable plant sources and responsibly obtained minerals whenever possible. Their naturally derived ingredients not only deliver a powerful clean, but they are also renewable or abundant in nature. Nature even inspires how they formulate their products for disposal. In nature, there is no waste. Everything is food for another part of the biosphere. Leaves on the forest floor slowly break down into nutrients for the soil to nourish the trees. Their soaps are formulated to readily biodegrade in a wastewater treatment facility or a septic system. Through biodegradation, microbes turn their soaps back into compounds that are found in nature, ensuring they leave nothing dirty behind. It’s the kind of clean you and Mother Nature can be proud of.
Ecover are protectors of the planet and scientists with a conscience who believe sparkly dishes shouldn’t have side effects. They know nature provides us with plenty of powerful ingredients and toxins never make anything better.
They consider cleaning a chance to make the world a better place and believe green should be a natural way of life. Ecover may have a 30-year head start, but they invite everyone to follow in their footsteps.
