Human Physiology 101
Water is a great way to hydrate, right? Well, yes and no. Water of course has the fluid you need because that's what it is - just fluid. Problem is once you start training and racing and drinking lots of water, your body starts using some of that fluid (in muscle contractions and for cooling for example) and gets rid of the rest through a few different mechanisms such as urination because it is just water - the body can store and use only so much pure water. Therein lies the problem - the more straight water you drink the more you lose - a self defeating endeavor if there ever was one.  But you're supposed to retain that water to "stay hydrated", right?!  What gives?

That's where electrolytes such as sodium and potassium come in -by their very nature they help your body retain the fluid it needs to function properly. That's why drinks with electrolytes are so important for proper hydration - they act as a catalyst to help your body retain fluid necessary for muscles to work properly so you don't lose all that valuable fluid. That's why you need Brew Electrolyte Tablets- because they are fortified with a unique blend of electrolytes, the tablets are a better form of hydrating than water alone. So where you may typically grab a bottle of just water, try Brew Tablets to retain the fluid you need to stay hydrated.

During extended training or racing, Electrolyte Tablets offer a convenient and fast way to enrich straight water (when Electrolyte Brew or an alternative may not be readily available).  Ultimately the Brew Electrolyte Tablets are another offering from GU that help athlete’s keep variety in their sports nutrition regimes.  Using them with other GU products such as GU Chomps is as simple as swapping them for Electrolyte Brew – an athlete should account for the lower calorie intake and possibly add an extra GU Energy Gel, Roctane or a Serving of Chomps (all roughly 100 calories).

Are You a Roctane Athlete?
If your idea of training or racing is giving it your all in a multi-hour adventure or you're competing in multiple racing heats during a day, then Roctane is for you. For all other training and racing, the original GU energy gel will keep you fueled like a champ.

Roctane: Learn the Science:
Roctane is GU sports' high-performance energy gel that utilizes a similar formula to our original GU Energy Gel, but with significantly higher concentrations of amino acids and citrates, plus a new amino acid complex-Ornithine Alpha-Ketaglutarate (OKG). These ingredients mitigate the energy-sapping effects of lactic-acid build-up, produce energy more efficiently, improve recovery through a decrease in exercise-induced muscle damage and maintain mental focus through delayed onset of fatigue signals from the central nervous system. The result is a premium sports nutrition product that allows athletes across all sports to perform at a higher intensity for a longer period of time.

Roctane's Amino Acid Blend: Your Muscles Never Had It So Good
By increasing the amounts and relative ratios of the following key ingredients found in regular GU and adding OKG, we created Roctane's revolutionary blend.  GU know Roctane works. Since 2001, we've used it as a nutritional research tool with in-house and elite athletes. This has allowed us to take new research and ideas and test them in competition and training with athletes performing in the world's greatest races. And after many tweaks and trials, Roctane is now the most potent energy gel in the world.

Higher levels of histidine-by a factor of 10 times. When you stress muscles, they fatigue and experience a rather unpleasant side-effect, metabolic acidosis (a.k.a., "the burn"). Both are primarily due to proton (H+) buildup1. In our research, we found studies that demonstrate how various naturally occurring proteins packed with histidine have buffered the muscles' acid build-up2. That's because the histidine residues contained within these proteins are able to neutralize those nasty H+ ions and reduce the effects of acidosis. By adding more histidine, we're encouraging the body to produce more of these buffering proteins and keep muscles pumping harder for longer.

Higher levels of citrates (potassium citrate, sodium citrate and citric acid)-by a factor of up to 3 times. During any training or competition, the body requires energy to keep moving. Central to the production of energy is the citric acid cycle (Krebs cycle), which is responsible for the breakdown of amino acids, glucose and fatty acids to produce ATP3 (the actual energy molecule that fuels your muscles). Roctane's citrate blend contributes to the citric acid cycle and promotes greater efficiency in the production of ATP. The faster you can produce ATP, the sooner your muscles can utilize the energy.

Higher levels of branched chain amino acids (BCAAs-leucine, valine and isoleucine)-by a factor of 3 times. During physical exertion, BCAAs become a major fuel source, in addition to to promoting protein synthesis-the conversion of protein into fuel-as well as setting the table for rapid glucose biosynthesis3,4. Our BCAAs also thwart muscle catabolism, a distressing natural situation where the body starts breaking down its own muscle to use as fuel. In addition, research suggests that BCAA supplementation may delay the onset of central fatigue by blocking the transport of tryptophan into the brain, thus limiting the production of serotonin5. This key neurotransmitter has been linked to depression of the central nervous system function which leads to feelings of sleepiness and fatigue6. By blocking this effect, Roctane helps you stay more alert and focused and on top of your game.

Roctane contains a new amino acid complex, Ornithine Alpha-Ketaglutarate (OKG), formulated to further the BCAAs ability to block the body's destructive catabolic process during extreme physical exertion or muscle trauma. Where you may notice the positive effect of OKG is during recovery, as it goes to work blocking the catabolic effects of the various hormones that control this process. Amino acids also play an important role in the Krebs cycle alongside the citrates listed above7.

While our original GU contains each of these key citrates and amino acids (aside from OKG), the increased percentages found in Roctane and the ensuing enhanced level and efficiency of these benefits-plus OKG-are what sets Roctane apart as the ultimate performance gel for serious athletes.

Electrolytes: Necessary for Optimum Hydration and Muscle Function
There are two major electrolytes in the body: sodium and potassium, both of which are lost through sweat. Compared to original GU, Roctane packs almost 3 times more sodium and contains approximately 20 more mg of potassium. Why? The greater the intensity of your workout or race, the more you're going to sweat. By replacing the extra amount of lost electrolytes with Roctane, you can rehydrate more effectively and retain more fluid. In combination, the carbohydrates (below) and electrolytes ramp up the body's ability to absorb fluid into the blood stream.

Maltodextrin & Glucose: GU's Carbohydrate Formula for Success
Like GU, Roctane provides athletes with a shot of 100 calories in the form of an approximately 4:1 ratio of maltodextrin to fructose (final ratio depends upon flavor). Why maltodextrin? It's a complex carbohydrate, and studies have shown that complex carbs are actually digested faster than simple sugars like table sugar and honey. This matters because the quicker your body can tap these carbs, the less blood is diverted away from your muscles to digest those carbs. Fructose is the principle sugar in fruit, and we use it because your stomach processes it faster than maltodextrin, yet it doesn't produce the sugar high like you experience with simple sugars such as sucrose or corn syrup. Fructose also enhances flavor-it's what makes you crave Roctane. We limit the amount of fructose used so it doesn't taste too sweet. Studies show that we become highly sensitive to taste after extensive exercise. As a result, what tasted sweet at the beginning of exercise will, two-plus hours later, taste overly sweet and become unpalatable. In other words, you won't eat it.

Two C's (Calcium and Caffeine) for High Performance
We put calcium into each packet of Roctane because you lose calcium during exercise, and your body needs it to thrive. In addition to helping build up your bone density, calcium plays a crucial role in the Krebs cycle of converting carbohydrates into energy molecules that fuel your muscles. Research has also shown that there may be a link between muscle fatigue and calcium loss, so adding it back to your body is a good thing. Roctane's 35mg of caffeine is roughly equivalent to a can of Coke. It acts as a stimulant, but it also serves another purpose: helping the body produce more power and reducing its perception of pain. There's even evidence that caffeine sparks the body to metabolize fat during exercise which provides the body with another fuel source. 35 mg is the optimum level of caffeine to keep you zipping along without getting a case of the jitters.

Gel Ingredient Comparison
Lining up every imaginable energy gel and scrutinizing the nutritional fine print isn't unheard of for serious endurance athletes. But here at GU, our job is to help you focus on your workouts, not ruin your eyesight. The table below provides a quick comparison of the critical components of the energy gels most readily available at retail.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I use Roctane?
Roctane is specifically formulated for your most intense training and racing. If you face a hard, multi-hour training session or race (think marathons, ultra-marathons, Iron-distance triathlons, 100-plus-mile bike rides and adventure races), take one-to-two Roctane gels 15 minutes prior to the start, followed by an additional packet every 30-45 minutes along the way. If you compete in short bursts of all-out efforts (think track meets or crew regattas) then go with a packet of Roctane 45 and 15 minutes before, as well as immediately after, your event.

Why is it used just like GU’s original energy gel?
Fundamentally, Roctane is GU, just with more of the stuff that makes original GU so effective (histidine, branched chain amino acids, citrates) plus OKG, an added amino acid complex that lessens damage to muscle tissue during hard training or racing and speeds recovery. You can use GU and Roctane somewhat interchangeably, but Roctane is specifically formulated for your most intense training and racing. The higher concentrations of these key ingredients give you more of what your body needs when you need it most.

How much fluid should I drink with Roctane?
Same as you always should: A couple of big gulps of fluid with Roctane and around 20 to 30 ounces of fluid for each hour of exercise (Don’t drink it all at once, please. Pace yourself.).

Should I use Roctane differently on race-day?
No, make sure to pre-load your body with a packet or two of Roctane and chase with water approximately 45 minutes and 15 minutes before the start.

What happens if I switch to Roctane exclusively for my sports nutrition needs?
If you win a lot because of it, we sponsor you. Seriously though, you may enjoy your best performance ever. Roctane has everything you need to keep on running all day and all night. It was, after all, designed for competitors of 100-mile ultra marathons. However, your stomach or your taste buds might want you to switch things up a bit with different flavors. That’s why Roctane is a perfect complement to an energy program that includes all varieties of GU, as well as Electrolyte Brew for rehydration.

What is OKG?
Ornithine Alpha-Ketoglutarate is the scientific name of this amino acid complex, and it essentially blunts the catabolic process, a.k.a. the body breaking down muscle in response to extreme physical exertion and the corresponding muscle trauma. Simply put, OKG enhances recovery by protecting your muscle tissue from the damage inherent in extreme athletic efforts.

Why does Roctane have the same amount of calories as original GU?
You find 100 calories of carbohydrates in both Roctane and GU because there’s no reason to add more. The stomach can only absorb so many calories at a time during exercise without disrupting the oxygenated blood flowing to your hard-working muscles. Add too many more calories and the body redirects blood from your muscles to the intestines to digest those calories. And you slow down.

Why doesn’t Roctane contain the antioxidant vitamins in original GU?
Roctane does not contain the vitamin C or vitamin E that is in GU in order to make room for the additional volume of ingredients in Roctane. Since it is fairly easy to obtain your daily recommended intake of vitamins C and E by ingesting one or more packets of original GU, we removed them in favor of accommodating the added OKG and other increased concentrations of ingredients which are beneficial on those really hard days. If you are concerned about getting enough antioxidants, we suggest including a packet of original GU, in addition to Roctane, as part of of your nutrition program during intense training and racing.

Why does Roctane cost more than the original GU?
Roctane costs more because there are up to 10 times the amount of high-performance ingredients in each packet. Consider this analogy: Original GU is like premium unleaded—it’ll power the most sophisticated engines on the planet with no problem. Roctane is our high-octane, racing-grade unleaded. It burns hotter and stronger and will keep an engine running near red-line all day long.

Is Roctane Kosher?
GU Energy Gel, Roctane, GU Electrolyte Brew, and GU Recovery Brew are all certified Kosher. Chomps are not.

The GU Story
From 1991 until today, athletes the world over have come to the same conclusion: GU works. Their Berkeley-based sports nutrition company started with their original GU Energy Gel, a revolutionary and more effective method to keep athletes fueled during exercise. Since then, GU has continued to improve the recipe, incorporating the latest scientific research into its products. In 2001, GU Electrolyte Brew (formerly Gu2o) was launched as the perfect hydration companion to GU Energy Gel. 2008 saw the introduction of Roctane Ultra Endurance Energy Gel, followed by Chomps Energy Chews and GU Recovery Brew in 2009. Every product is formulated to further GU’s mission: to help athletes go faster and longer than ever before.

The Gu Factory
Athletes everywhere appreciate the taste, convenience and performance enhancing benefits of GU Energy Gel and Roctane Ultra Endurance Energy Gel. But few give much thought to how or where these gels are produced and packaged. You might be interested to learn a bit about the GU factory and the exceptional care that goes into every packet they create.

As they mix each batch of GU, the formula for every flavor is double checked against the super-secret master recipe. Their Director of R&D sources only the highest quality ingredients and happily rejects raw materials if they are off spec. He also oversees the production process from soup to nuts, ensuring precision in the mixing process. Texture, taste, pH? all good? He’s also the in-house go-to guy for their never ending sports nutrition questions – they make sure he puts his degree to good use!

When all ingredients have been accurately measured, the batches are carefully blended only at the proper speed and temperature to ensure repeatable high quality and consistency. The production team is comprised of several long-time employees; collectively they boast more than 50 years experience. Together their team has produced tens of millions of packets of GU! Talk about athletic kilowatts. As the gatekeepers of day-to-day manufacturing, anything short of perfection just won’t pass muster.

GU quality control continues when the gel is ready for packaging. Customized machinery, used solely for GU and Roctane Energy Gels, fills each packet with a precise amount of gel - Laverne & Shirley meet the modern age! There’s nothing quite like a stroll through the manufacturing building when Chocolate Outrage is running, the intoxicating aroma of pure Belgian chocolate wafting through the air. Time it just right and you can sample a warm packet fresh off the line, a decadent and lipsmacking treat. It’ll send you running for some vanilla ice cream to complement the Outrageousness. I digress…. Then, the boxes are folded, glued and packed by their fully automated line. Every box is certain to have the proper number of packets as each is weighed before being sealed and packed for its final destination, your gear bag and ultimately, your mouth.

GU's state-of-the-art production line and exacting quality control process are valuable assets, but what do they mean to you, the athlete? You can trust that the premium gel you rely on undergoes the most rigorous quality checks in the sports nutrition industry. They watch over every batch of gel they produce and maintain a production facility that is free from the risk of contamination by foreign substances. Most other gel manufacturers outsource production to third party contract manufacturers where who-knows-what was produced in the previous batch. This can be a serious concern in a supplement business that is lightly regulated and too often not completely above board.

GU makes sure you can focus on training and reaching your goals in upcoming races. Breathe easy and leave your gels in the hands of the energy food experts at GU. Just suck down a packet of your favorite flavor and go (big)!

About GU Energy

GU Sports (sports street marketing) was founded in Berkeley, Ca, in the early 90's by Dr. William Vaughan. The mission from day one, which is still true today, is to provide athletes the best exercise specific nutrition products available. Period! After formulating the world's first energy bar, Dr. Vaughan was disappointed in that the bar, due to its high level of fat, fiber and protein, did not work for athletes while they were training and racing. His own daughter, Laura, a very accomplished ultra-marathoner, continued to have severe stomach problems when consuming bars during races. "how can we call it an energy bar for athletes when all it does is shut down the system for 45 minutes or so while the body digests all those useless-to-athletes ingredients?" asked a frustrated Dr. Vaughan.
