Recycling and Repurposing CamelBak Products

When it is time to replace your CamelBak product, we recommend that you disassemble the product as fully as possible. Place any plastic components into your curbside recycling. Then, donate any material components (e.g., packs) to Goodwill or other re-use organizations, as they're experts in re-purposing items to keep them out of a landfill.

CamelBak Products, LLC is an outdoors equipment company based in Petaluma, California, known primarily for its hydration products, such as hydration packs and water bottles. CamelBak is also a supplier of hydration packs, protective gear, and other products to the U.S. military and law enforcement agencies around the world. The CamelBak name comes from a play on the myth that a camel stores water in its hump. In reality, those humps store fat.

Small Steps to Environmental Leaps

CamelBak thinks the best way to reduce waste is to create products that last. So their products are meant to be used over and over and over again- standing up to rigorous use before they are eventually recycled or repurposed.  But thye also think it's important to make small choices that can make a big difference. We've carefully thought about many of the day-to-day "housekeeping" tasks at CamelBak to make sure they are walking the proverbial walk. After all, their company's long-term vision is to eliminate bottled water and the environmental waste it generates.

Here are some small steps they've taken about which we feel pretty good:

  • Their Petaluma, California headquarters is built to LEED-certification standards
  • They've eliminated disposable bottled water at our offices. Perhaps this is not so surprising...
  • Their San Diego, California distribution center uses rechargeable, electric equipment to lower CO2 emissions and provide a healthier workplace for their employees
  • The dedicated business operations team based in Asia reduces their intercontinental travel
  • Their sourcing team works hard to find and develop materials that are more sustainable and biodegradable
  • Their bottles are all dishwasher safe. The dishwasher uses half the energy, one-sixth of the water and less soap vs. hand-washing
  • CamelBak has a recycling program for paper, plastics and aluminum- and we set our printers to print on both sides of a page whenever possible
  • CamelBak's headquarters office is accessible via public transit, and is bike commute-friendly with bike storage facilities, showers and lockers

About CamelBak

If you have found yourself wondering— with the unlimited amount of time you have reclaimed by texting instead of emailing— what CamelBak is really like, read through their mission statement and values.

An Idea Born From the Most Basic Human Needs — Thirst

It's 1988.
Bicycle enthusiast, Michael Eidson, is competing in the "Hotter'N Hell 100." And that's exactly what it is: a 100-mile road race in the grueling summer heat of Wichita Falls, Texas. Water is vital to surviving the race, and there are few places to refill a water bottle. Eidson, an emergency medical technician by trade, decides to fill an IV bag with water and slip it into a white tube sock. Yes, a tube sock. Then he stuffs the contraption into the back of his bike jersey, throws the thin hose over his shoulder and clamps it with a clothespin.

Hands-free hydration is born. And Eidson is able to drink as he pedals...while the other racers laugh and fiddle with their water bottles.

Operation Hydration — The Road to Survuval

Jeff Wemmer, a competitive cyclist who fell hard for CamelBak, was so impressed by the product that he started bringing packs to races to sell them. Talk about a fan. CamelBak eventually hired him, and in 1993, Jeff embarked on a road trip to keep the start-up running during very tough times.

Company lore has it that Jeff visited bike shops from Florida to California, pitching our renegade product from the back of his motorcycle. Each order Jeff faxed back to the factory literally breathed another day of life back into CamelBak.

The Rest is History

It took courage, conviction and imagination to evolve from an IV bag in a tube sock sold by a motorcycle-driven sales force of one. Our core values remain the same and drive everything we do - from inventing the hydration category to becoming the world's leading maker of hydration solutions.

Oh yeah...about those bikers who laughed at Eidson? Well, chances are they've got a CamelBak strapped to their back or in their bike cage these days. Go figure...

Social Responsibility

"We give a ___." is one of CamelBak's core company values. (They only have four, and each means something important to them.) This one stems from their belief that doing the right thing isn't just good business sense, but common sense. They pay close attention not only to what they make— but how they make it, for whom they make it and the way it impacts people's lives and the environment.

CamelBak's Partnerships Matter

  • When choosing suppliers, CamelBak seeks out long-term business partners who are:
  • ISO Certified
  • Leaders in advanced manufacturing techniques
  • Specialized and highly technical- not commodity suppliers
  • Willing to explore and learn with them to discover cost-effective solutions to unique challenges
  • Located as close to the point of final destination as possible, lowering financial and environmental transit costs
  • Taking meaningful steps to reduce their carbon footprint, including reducing water waste, saving energy, eliminating toxic emissions and putting an end to the use of harmful chemicals
  • Just as they're committed to their own employees, they also care about the health and well-being of their partners' employees. Their partners must pay a living wage, provide safe working conditions and adhere to all local employment laws. To that end, they post a Code of Conduct in their partners' facilities. The Code includes contact information so that employees can anonymously report rights violations. Additionally, CamelBak conducts regular third party compliance audits.

Whenever possible, they work with businesses that are providing employment  opportunities to historically under-represented groups, including women-owned, veteran-owned and socially and economically disadvantaged organizations.

Is it Good Enough for You?

When making their products, they seek out materials that exceed the performance and safety expectations of our diverse users. They test- and retest- at various stages of the manufacturing process to ensure the product (and the materials it's made from) works the way it should in worst case conditions like bone-chilling cold, desert-hot heat, and prolonged exposure to the elements. And of course, it should go without saying that their products meet or exceed FDA and EU regulations.

CamelBak Frequently Asked Questions:

What is your BPA-free Better Bottle made from?
The CamelBak Better Bottle line is made from a new copolyester polymer called Tritan, made by Eastman. It offers the same great qualities that they have come to expect from polycarbonate bottles and is 100% BPA-Free. The BPA-Free CamelBak Better Bottle is now available. The Better Bottle Caps are made of Polypropylene – for toughness and sealing performance. The Big Bite Valve is made of Medical-Grade Silicone – for long life and taste-free performance

Is polycarbonate safe?
CamelBak has monitored scientific research concerning the safety of products that include BPA.   Based on a broad range of scientific findings, they firmly believe in the safety of our products. They are not recalling our polycarbonate bottles.

While there is not consensus on the issues surrounding BPA, recent comprehensive reviews of polycarbonate and BPA have concluded that estimated daily exposure to BPA poses no known safety risk. However, we intend to closely monitor recent reports from The National Toxicology and Health Canada. The findings from tests by the following organizations indicate that BPA exposure does not pose a safety risk:

  • The Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
  • US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
  • The Harvard Center for Risk Analysis
  • The American Council on Science & Safety

Many regulatory bodies worldwide, including the European Commission Scientific Committee on Food, the United Kingdom Food Standards Agency, and the Japan Ministry for Health, Labor, & Welfare

What is BPA?
Bisphenol-A is an ingredient used to make polycarbonate. In recent months, there has been increasing consumer demand for a bottle that is not made with Bisphenol-A (BPA), and CamelBak is proud to offer BPA-free bottles with the same great properties customers have come to expect from polycarbonate: vibrant color, clarity, durability, dishwasher-safe, and with no residual taste. The entire CamelBak bottle line is now available in BPA-Free materials in North America.

Why did you change from polycarbonate to this new Tritan material?
Customers have asked for a BPA-free alternative to polycarbonate. CamelBak has a long history of developing innovative products by listening to our customers and they have been committed to finding a BPA-free alternative to polycarbonate (PC). After exclusive research and material trials, CamelBak was the first to develop and deliver Tritan to market.

Does this new BPA-free Better Bottle leach any chemicals? What type of safety testing has been done on the new Bottle?
After rigorous 3rd party testing of the BPA-free Better Bottle, no harmful chemicals have been detected to come in contact with, or leach into food/beverage surfaces. A FCN (Food Contact Substance Notification) notice #729 declared that Tritan is safe and meets all EPA and FDA guidelines for material that is to come in repeated contact with food.  In addition, we have verified that all materials used in the bottle including Tritan meet the stringent guidelines set by California Proposition 65.  Extraction tests were completed by independent 3rd party researchers, verifying that the new material meets all requirements as set forth by organizations such as:

  • FDA food safety standards
  • European Community food safety standards
  • Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare
  • California Prop 65

How do I know if my bottle is BPA-Free?
The BPA-Free logo will be printed on the side of the CamelBak Better Bottle if it is a BPA-Free version. In the store, the BPA-Free bottles will display a large BPA-Free sticker.

Change your filter regularly to ensure great-tasting water. Each filter reliably reduces contaminants for 300 refills of the bottle or approximately 3 months of use at 3-4 full bottles per day (48 gallons / 180 liters). You may need to change your filter more or less often depending on the amount of water you consume. See included user guide for full assembly and usage instructions.
