What Is Yerba Mate?
Yerba Mate has the strength of coffee, the health benefits of tea, and the euphoria of chocolate all in one beverage. Of the six commonly used stimulants in the world: coffee, tea, kola nut, cocoa, and guarana - yerba mate triumphs as the most balanced, delivering both energy and nutrition. The leaves of the rainforest mate tree naturally contain 24 vitamins and minerals, 15 amino acids, abundant antioxidants. In fact, The Pasteur Institute and the Paris Scientific society in 1964 concluded "it is difficult to find a plant in any area of the world equal to mate in nutritional value" and that yerba mate contains "practically all of the vitamins necessary to sustain life."
Yerba mate contains caffeine, theophylline, and theobromine, well-known stimulants also found in tea, coffee, and chocolate. The caffeine content varies between that of green tea and coffee. Unlike tea, yerba mate has a low tannin content so it can be strong like coffee with out becoming extremely bitter. Unlike coffee, yerba mate is not oily and acid forming, so it is less likely to cause stomach acid and jitters. Yerba mate has been used as a base for herbal medicines in South America for centuries, and the plant’s benefits and therapeutic properties have been verified by a number of scientific studies. The chemical components of yerba mate are similar to those found in green tea; however, yerba mate is more nutritious than green tea. Yerba mate is an antioxidant powerhouse!
While yerba mate and green tea share many of the same benefits, (antioxidants, polyphenols, flavenoids, bioflavenoids, and theophylline) modern science shows that yerba mate has more active compounds than green tea, 52 to be exact. Technically, green tea is the Camellia sinensis plant, and is immediatly flash heated after being picked, and is not fermented or roasted. Healthwise, green teas are superior to oolong and black teas, as many of the beneficial antioxidant compounds are protected by the green tea production process. Black teas may taste sweeter because they are fermented and then roasted whereby the sugars carmelize, but this flavor comes at the expense of its antioxidant qualities. The Mate Gourd

So, literally, yerba mate means “herb cup”. For centuries people have sipped yerba mate using a gourd and bombilla - a filter like straw. It is believed that drinking yerba mate from the gourd is a joyful way to receive the healthful and invigorating properties of yerba mate. The mate gourd is offered as a symbol of hospitality and is peacefully passed from hand to hand around a circle of friends while ideas are shared, stories are told, and a sense of community is created. Yerba mate lifts the spirit.
In Paraguay, yuyeras (herbalists) have been using yerba mate for centuries as the base of herbal medicine mixtures called “remedios” or remedies. It is common to make “remedios” with yerba mate by steeping medicinal herbs in the water used to prepare mate in the gourd. It is believed that by improving circulation and promoting balance, yerba mate acts as a catalyst to enhance the healing powers of other herbs.
Sharing the Mate Gourd
Tomando mate (drinking mate) is a symbol of hospitality. As the mate gourd is passed around, a sense of connection emerges. The first step of the ceremony is the preparation of the gourd. Typically, the cebador/a - mate server - prepares mate for a friend or a group of friends. The cebador/a drinks the first one or two gourd-fulls, testing the waters to ensure that only a smooth running mate is shared. Then the gourd is refilled with water and passed counter-clockwise with the bombilla (straw-filter) facing the recipient. Each person drinks the entire gourd: "you share the vessel, not the liquid." The recipient of the gourd has as much time as needed to finish the gourd-full. After the last few sips of the mate are gone, the gourd is returned with the bombilla facing the cebador/a. The gourd is refilled with hot water and follows around the circle, continuing in this fashion until the mate is lavado (flat). If someone has had enough mate, they simply say gracias (thank you) to indicate that they are finished.
The Mate Ceremony

“When people gather to drink mate (mah-tay) something magical happens. It is a simple, daily custom and yet it has all the characteristics of a ceremony. Like any ceremony it has rites which are carefully performed in the same way, day after day. It is a moment of leisure with friends and family. In the country, the gauchos sit together around the fogón (the campfire), sipping their mate after a long day's work. Tiredness breeds silence and silently the mate gourd circles from hand to hand. And then, slowly, conversation starts, people come closer together, confidences are exchanged. The mate ceremony resembles the American rite of the calumet, the pipe of peace. There too, the pipe goes from hand to hand, completing the circle, offering hospitality and goodwill. Mate is drunk by everybody: it is drunk by the trucker and his companion in the loneliness of the long, never-ending routes (they use a vessel with a wide mouth into which it is easy to pour the hot water in spite of the jolts along the track); by students, when studying; by workers during their midday rest; at home for breakfast or on any other occasion, rain or shine, in summer or in winter.”
Growing, Harvesting, Processing

Sheltered from direct sunlight,which can burn the leaves and make them bitter, rainforest grown yerba mate leaves are dark, emerald green and teeming with nutrients and flavor.
The typical commercial way of growing yerba mate in South America is clearing fertile lands to get full direct sunshine on the plants, which makes them grow faster. It's a mono-cultivation practice, which wears the soil out and reduces its productivity year after year.
Guayaki cultivates under native trees in forested areas. The yerba mate seeds are planted in fertile soils and are grown in the shade of the taller trees. Their yields are smaller with cultivation under native woods - up to 40% less product than the sun style cultivation, but it yields a much higher quality product, is more sustainable long term, and creates a habitat for bird and mammal species.
They also work with some farmers who have some partial shade cultivations and want to be more sustainable. Once a farmer partners with Guayaki, they provide technical advice on how to collect seeds and create nurseries, help them manage the organic growing process from cultivation through harvest, and then buy their shade grown mate.
Guayaki Yerba Mate is a work of art. Crafted like a fine wine, it is grown, harvested, and dried according to time honored traditions. Harvested from the lush subtropical forest, Guayakí hand-picks only the leaves and tender stems. After passing through a flash heating process to protect the antioxidants and nutritional properties, the mate is dried at low-temperatures. Finally, the mate is aged for one year in cedar chambers for a smooth, rich and balanced flavor.
The “whole plant - whole energy” approach is used in Guayakí's products. By combining the leaves and tender stems, they are able to produce a yerba mate with a unique, full-flavor and balanced energy. In 1996, Guayaki was seeded in California's central coast by two university buddies. Alex Pryor from Buenos Aires, and David Karr from Northern California. As good friends and passionate yerba mate drinkers, David and Alex set out to share the yerba mate plant with the world, recognizing that people were in need of a nourishing source of energy and a healthy dose of optimism. As good fortune would have it, co-founders Alex and David were swiftly joined by three other pioneering partners to round out the original founding seed group: don Miguel aka the “The Journeyman”, Steven Karr aka “Shape-Shifter”, and Christopher Mann aka “The Chairman of the Gourd”. These five ambitious friends aka the “semillas” (seeds) channeled their activist mentality into the creation of a new restorative business model, calling consumers to action by voting with their dollars.
The Semillas rooted themselves in fertile grounds of San Luis Obispo, CA, nestled comfortably between scenic Santa Barbara and magical Big Sur. This coastline, riddled with good surf breaks, provided the perfect backdrop for many extended mate gourd sessions while looking for surf. As passionate lifestylers, the Semillas group was intimately committed to a holistic lifestyle and business practice which was philosophically aligned with their love for nature, adventure, and spirit.
In a blend of the West coast pioneer spirit and Argentine hospitality, the inspired band of Semillas took to the road to share mate with all those who would listen. Rooted in the central coast, hours from any major city, road warriorship became Guayakí's destiny. Traveling in a mix of VW vans, pickups, and RV’s, David, Steven, and don Miguel took the wheel in the one hand and the mate gourd in the other, to the four corners of United States. With a strong brew of mate, good tunes, flowers, and genuine hospitality, the Semillas encouraged keen samplers to develop a relationship with the yerba mate plant.
Growing up, they always heard “money does not grow on trees.” Well, today they are proving that “money does grow on trees” and rainforest-grown yerba mate is the new green currency. It provides the peoples of the rainforest with income as well as the ability to steward their land.
