Frequently Asked Questions
What is coconut soap?
Coconut Soap is made by a centuries-old, time honored process mixing coconut oil with lye (sodium hydroxide). This begins what is called the saponification process. During the saponification process the coconut oil and lye (sodium hydroxide) are converted into coconut soap. All traces of residual lye (sodium hydroxide) are fully neutralized in our exclusive soap-making process.
What is Sodium Cocoate?
Sodium Chloride when combined with coconut oil causes a chemical reaction that changes the product over to Sodium Cocoate. This process is known as saponification. Kirk's soap contains no free lye or lye residues in it. All traces of residual lye are fully neutralized in our soap-making process.
Why have the ingredients changed on the bar soap?
Kirks Original Coco Castile Soap is a heritage product dating back to the 1800's. They recognize that over the years their consumers have more desire to understand what is in their products. In 2015, Kirk's Natural made the decision to offer full disclosure of ingredients in our Kirk's Coco Castile Soaps. In an effort to be transparent, they want to bring this to your attention. The new wrappers that you see have a simple and straightforward label. Please be assured that there have been no changes made to your beloved soap! Kirk's is happy to tell you what's in their soap! For example, "Coconut Soap" being an ingredient wasn't very clear. Sodium Chloride when combined with coconut oil causes a chemical reaction that changes the product over to Sodium Cocoate.
