Calbee in the "Present":

Nature - Calbee's Passion For Finest Ingredients
Nothing tastes better than locally produced foods that are fresh and in season. Calbee strives to bring out all natural goodness from the foods nature has bestowed upon us. For this reason, basic ingredients of Calbee's products sold in North America are produced locally. Shrimp caught in California and wheat grown in Oregon are used for Shrimp Flavored Chips, and Calbee mainly uses Snow pea grown in Canada to produce Saya-Snow pea Crisps and Snapea Crisps.

Wellness - Calbee's Commitment to a Balanced Diet
If all the necessary nutrients are to be obtained only from food sources, we need to consume a wide variety of foods. Over a long period of time, Asian people have developed a dietary tradition in which various types of food are consumed in small amounts. This eating habit reflects their deep concern about health and their desire for enjoyable eating. Calbee believes that we should reconsider a dietary habit in which only certain types of food are eaten to satisfy hunger and insufficient nutrients are supplied from dietary supplements.

Peace of Mind
Shrimp Flavored Chips is one example of Calbee's effort to provide peace of mind for their customers. Roasting process has successfully reduced the oil in this product to 20% of the amount conventionally used. With a new technology, Calbee's chips are ready to be digested quickly because they are already in the same condition as food digested in the stomach. This technology has been applied to the research and development of products that can be enjoyed safely by all age groups from infants to the elderly. Safe products that retain the natural flavor, nutritional value, and texture of ingredients... Improvement of production facilities and research and development of new technologies... Calbee is constantly innovating.

Calbee in the "Future":

A pleasant surprise fills you with excitement. It is Calbee's mission to challenge preconceptions like "this ingredient is not suitable for snacks" or "this ingredient takes too long to prepare." Calbee's nutritionally balanced and easy-to-enjoy snacks meet these challenges, giving you a pleasant surprise. By transforming challenges into opportunities, Calbee creates excitement.

Joy of Eating
Calbee believes that the joy of eating enriches our lives. Smart snacking can make you feel relaxed and relieve your stress. Whenever there are snacks, there will be smiles and a friendly atmosphere.

New cultures emerge through the integration of different cultures. History is the product of this continual integration. For instance, Asian cultures that crossed the Pacific Ocean have taken root in the United States and are now evolving into something new, such as California rolls, Teriyaki, and Bamboo works. A new food culture and mutual understanding will arise from the integration of an Asian style diet that focuses on eating a variety of foods in small quantities and a Western style diet that emphasizes consuming certain types of food in large amounts. This is Calbee's vision of the future.

Calbee America & Wellness:

Calbee's Mission
It is Calbee's mission to produce natural, healthy and tasty snacks. Calbee America is committed to pursuing ultimate purity and simplicity of their ingredients. To meet their goals, Calbee minimizes the use of additives to maximize the nutritional value of each component, while preserving flavor integrity. Calbee strives to produce edible goods that are enjoyable and safe for consumers of all ages, from infants to the elderly.

Workshops on Nutrition Education
Wellness is as important as taste to Calbee. This is why Calbee regularly holds workshops on nutrition education in Japan for children who will shoulder the future of society as well as for dietitians and parents. Lifestyle-related diseases like diabetes and high cholesterol are becoming widespread among children. Children cannot develop properly in mind and body without leading a healthy lifestyle. Calbee helps children learn more about snacks so that they can snack wisely in their daily life. This effort will lead to the enrichment of their diet, which in turn will promote true wellness.

The 3 R's
Calbee started the "Environment Project" in January of 2009. The project's slogan is to "Think Healthy, Act Green." Based on the 3 R's method, Calbee assigned each team member with a specific category. The 3 R's represent 'Reduce', 'Reuse' and 'Recycle'. The first category is "Surplus Product (Reduce and Reuse)." By donating unseasoned product surplus to local farmers, reexamining production operation and by educating employees about product surplus, Calbee is able to reduce their overall waste.

The second category is "Paper (Reduce)." By changing company computers printer settings to 2-side printing, changing workflow to eliminate amount of paper work to print, re-formatting company forms and by educating employees about paper waste, Calbee is able to reduce the amount of paper usage. Category three is "Water (Reduce)." Calbee is currently researching how they can reduce the use of water in their daily production. This project is one of the most difficult; Calbee has to start by reexamining plant cleaning procedures and determine where water misuse is being generated. Calbee hopes to have a solution to reduce water usage by the end of 2010.

The fourth category is "Energy / Electricity (Reduce)." By changing office lighting and temperature control settings, changing production operation procedures and by educating employees about how to save electricity, Calbee is able to reduce their electric usage significantly. The last category is another type of energy, "Gas (Reduce)." With production amounts increasing, it is proving challenging to reduce gas usage since most of the usage is related to Calbee's production. Calbee is continuing research on how they can reduce the use of gas energy and be more efficient in their use.

Helping Local Farmers & Reducing Waste
As Calbee would like to reduce waste as much as possible, with snack production comes food waste. To minimize actual food waste, Calbee provides local farmers in Dixon their unseasoned product waste. Local farmers bring this food waste back to their farms and grind them to smaller pieces and mix them up with the normal diet for their goats and pigs. This reduces Calbee's waste amount significantly. Calbee has started this program in May of 2009 and since then they have donated 1.5 tons of food waste to their farmers every other week. This process creates a win-win situation for the farmers (free food for their livestock) and Calbee (reduce waste amount).

Natural Ingredients
Calbee America only uses natural ingredients. This means no additives, no colorings, no preservatives. In addition to using natural ingredients, Calbee chooses healthy ingredients. Shrimp in their Shrimp Chips contain calcium and vitamins. Calbee only uses whole shrimp (Head to tail) to contain as much nutritional benefits and natural flavoring as possible and also by using the whole shrimp, Calbee reduces food waste. Healthy cooking in production also keeps Calbee's snacks healthy and natural. Calbee BAKES their product, no frying, and they are then seasoned with oil and salt for easier consumption and also for easier digestion. Calbee's snacks are tasty with natural flavoring and little seasoning, Calbee is committed to producing tasty snacks for their consumer.
