    Is your sunscreen reef safe?
You're on vacation in a tropical paradise, the sun is shining, and you are preparing for a swim in the reef. As the sun-conscious person that you are, you lather up with some sunscreen you picked up at the resort and dive in. But wait! Is your sunscreen reed safe? Not enough people realize that chemical-based sunscreens can cause harmful damage to the world's coral and that a simple change can help to stop coral bleaching.

The NOAA National Center for Coastal Ocean Science and partners have found a link between sunscreen chemicals and coral bleaching. To summarize the findings of the study published in the Environmental Health Perspectives journal:

    • Corals are highly sensitive organisms that are prone to bleaching at the slightest stress, making even low concentrations of chemicals potentially harmful.
    • The chemicals that filter ultraviolet (UV) light can activate latent viral infections in the symbiotic microalgae that the corals rely on for nutrition.
    • Seawater surrounding coral exposed to sunscreen contained up to 15 times more viruses than unexposed samples.
    • The ingredients found in sunscreens that should be avoided around reefs, that also have shown potentially harmful effects on humans, are octinoxate (also known as ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate), oxybenzone, parabens and octocrylene.
    • The researchers estimate that 4000-6000 metric tons of sunscreen washes off swimmers and snorkelers into coral reef environments, and that up to 10% of the world's reefs are at risk for bleaching due to sunscreen runoff.

While the study's methodology isn't necessarily perfect, as Christine Beggs of Project Blue Hope analyses, ingredients in chemical sunscreens are still harmful to both humans and the environment. Instead, she suggests the use of reef safe mineral sunscreens that are water resistant and biodegradable for the most environmentally friendly method of sun protection. The coral reefs, and your skin, will thank you.

    Goddess Garden's Ingredients

    • Aloe Vera
They use organic Aloe Vera plant for many different reasons. Not only is it a great moisturizer, but it is also very soothing to the skin (think of products with aloe to soothe sunburns). Aloe Vera is great in sunscreen for the same reasons why it is great to treat sunburns!
    • Sunflower - Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil
They love the sunflower seed oil that they include in their sunscreens. Sunflower is a great moisturizer that has a lot of vitamin E, which acts as a powerful anti-oxidant. Their sunflower seed oil is certified organic, non-GMO, and is sourced right here in the US!
    • Soybeans - Glycine Soja Oil
Goddess Garden's certified soybean oil comes from non-GMO crops sourced in the US. Soybean oil also serves a dual purpose as both a moisturizer and as a "fixative" that protects the essential oils they use in their products.
    • Minerals - Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide
The active ingredients are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, unlike many other sunscreens that use active synthetic chemical ingredients such as oxybenzone and avobenzone. When zinc and titanium are used together like in Goddess Garden, they help make sunscreen go on sheer and non-whitening!
    • Lavender - Lavandula Angustifolio Oil
Goddess Garden uses lavender essential oils in most of their sunscreens. Lavender gives their sunscreen its wonderful fragrance, but this lovely plant also is a strong anti-inflammatory that is good for minor burns, insect bites, and stings! They love their lavender!
    • Radish - Radish Root Ferment Filtrate
Goddess Garden uses radish root as a part of their plant -based preservation system. A fun fact about radish in their sunscreen is that this ingredient is actually alive! Radish root is a "living" lactic acid just like the fermentation process is "alive." This means that they don't have any synthetic preservatives in their sunscreens so you know it's good for you and good for the earth!

So what about the other ingredients?

    • Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter) Seed Oil
Their shea butter is sourced from fair trade farms in Togo, Africa. Shea butter come from mechanically processed nuts that come from the shea tree. As an ingredients, Shea Butter is primarily used as a moisturizing agent. It is also an anti-inflammatory that reduces damage from airborne toxins and environmental impurities like pollution.
    • Glycerin
Derived from palm oil, this certified organic ingredient is a type of moisturizer called a humectant, which actually draws water to the skin. Glycerin also lowers the freezing point of their sunscreens.
    • Glyceryl Stearate
Also derived from palm oil, glyceryl stearate is the primary emulsifier in their sunscreens that prevents the water and oils from separating. It also makes their sunscreen less greasy.
    • Polyhydroxystearic Acid
This is simple ingredient is a suspending agent that keeps their formula well-balanced. Although its name sounds a little spooky, polyhydroxystearic acid is non-toxic.
    • Stearic Acid
This is yet another ingredient derived from palm oil. Stearic acid helps keep your skin soft!
    • Tocopherol (Vitamin E)
Tocopherol keeps their essential oils from going rancid. It is also a free radical scavenger that has great antioxidant properties!
    • Xanthan Gum
This very common ingredient is found in many food product because it thickens and stabilizes their formula. For their sunscreen, it actually creates a thickness that makes the lotion more spreadable. Xanthan gum is a chain of sugars that comes from the fermentation of glucose (sugar).
    • Caprylic Triglyceride
Found in their facial sunscreen, caprylic triglyceride is a fraction of a coconut oil chemical segment. At the molecular level, caprylic triglyceride never goes rancid and is totally stable. This ingredient has a silky feel to it that leaves your skin feeling smooth and non-greasy.
    • Helichrysum Italicum (Immortelle) Oil
Also found only in their facial sunscreen, Immortelle Oil is an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant that evens out the complexion of their skin.

    Sustainability at Goddess Garden
At Goddess Garden, they try to live every day like it's Earth Day. If you have looked at their packaging, you can get a taste of their values. Their sunscreen is biodegradable, reef safe, and contains organic, non-GMO ingredients that keep chemicals away from their bodies and the earth. But their commitment to the earth goes so much deeper!

Recyclable Packaging: What a Novel Idea!
They are especially proud of one of their product features: their sunscreen bottles are recyclable. To the average consumer, this might not seem like that big of a deal. A lot of containers are recyclable, right? Wrong. Take a look at your daily cosmetic product packages. Most, if not all, are not recyclable. In order to be thrown into the single-stream recycling bin, a product must be labeled with a recycling number 1, 2, or 5 (check with your local recycling guidelines as they can vary between regions).

Take a look at their continuous spray sunscreen bottles. Most similar spray bottles for sunscreen are made out of tin, with an inner plastic bag made from mylar, making it destined for the landfill. Goddess Garden continuous spray bottles are made from aluminum, with an inner bag that is also made out of aluminum, making it recyclable. Just make sure to pop off the small plastic cap when the bottle is empty.

What about their sunscreen lotions? Almost no flexible tubes are recyclable; the best you will find are tubes made from 30% post-consumer product. A valiant effort, but they knew they could do better. Their tubes are made from a special process that allows for the polypropylene (a fancy word for that little number 5 on the back of the package that indicates that it is recyclable) tube to adhere to the label, which is also made from polypropylene. Other tubes are made from mixed plastics that are adhered to non-recyclable labels, voiding them from the recycling bin. Caps are another component of packing that can make or break a product's recyclability, and they went the extra mile to make sure that the whole tube, cap and all, can be recycled.

You may be wondering, "Why doesn't every company make their products recyclable? It seems pretty simple." As with everything in a consumerist society, it all comes down to money. They could be using cheap materials to save them money, but that isn't who they are or what they are about. Goddess Garden was created with a commitment to quality, natural sun protection with a low carbon footprint, so they are happy to pour in the extra money to ensure that their products live up to their mission statement. Similarly, as consumers you have the power to choose to support businesses like theirs with the purchase of a sustainable, recyclable product, even if it means paying a few extra dollars.

Other Sustainable Efforts at Goddess Garden
Their office building is another testament to their commitment to sustainability. For one, all of their electric energy comes from wind power. Their recycling dumpsters fill up faster than the trash dumpsters, and they recycle a lot of materials within the sunscreen production process.

If you want a small peek into the making of sunscreen, here are some steps they take to be the most energy efficient during production: Sunscreen goes through a baking and cooling process, and in order to reduce energy for the heating process, they use heat-exchange technology to preserve the hot water in a holding tank so it can be used for the next round, rather than heating up a new batch of water. There is another part of production that requires air compression, which also uses a lot of energy. They have engineered a way to use an air blower rather than compressed air, which uses 1/10th of the energy.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: a Mantra to Live By
They are proud of how little waste results from their sunscreen production process, and the fact that they can put the recycling power into the hands of their consumers as well. They have put in a lot of work to get to the sustainability level that they are at today, and are constantly looking for ways to become more efficient and produce less of a carbon footprint. Goddess Garden truly cares about the earth and the people who inhabit it, and they want to send that message through the sunscreen products that they produce.
