Color Hints & Tips

If you want to lighten your hair:
Tints of Nature will lighten your hair by approximately one shade.

If you’re a natural base 5, for example, then it will lift your hair to around a base 6. To lighten your hair more significantly, use Tints of Nature's lightening kit (suitable for medium brown to blonde hair).

If you want to use a fashion shade but you have gray hair:
Not a problem. If you’re using one of the fashion shades, you just need to mix it with the same amount of the natural shade with the same number. For example:

The only shade that may not 100% cover all gray is 10N.

Top tips to treat gray hair:
Gray hair can be harder to color because it’s lacking in moisture. Luckily, Tints of Nature has clever ways to soften and moisturize it so it’ll drink up lots of lovely color. Before you color your hair:

  1. Wash your hair with Tints of Nature Clarify Shampoo working into a lather (please follow the instructions on the bottle).
  2. Massage Tints of Nature Hydrate Treatment into your hair thoroughly and leave it on to work its magic for 15 minutes.
  3. Finally, to get the best color take-up possible with gray hair, mix your chosen color with the same number N color. (For example: 25ml 7D + 25ml 7N + 50ml Colorfix = fabulous fashion color that covers gray.)
  4. Leave the color on your hair for 40 minutes before rinsing.
  5. You can also add a little heat for the first 10 minutes you leave the color on. Use a hairdryer on a low-medium heat setting making sure you apply the heat evenly across your hair.

Top tips for extremely damaged hair:
Healthier hair responds better to color. Tints of Nature's Structure Treatment is a unique nourishing and strengthening formula to restore extremely damaged hair. Use as a pre-coloring treatment.

  1. Wash your hair with Tints of Nature Clarify Shampoo working into a lather (please follow the instructions on the bottle).
  2. Massage Tints of Nature Structure Treatment into your hair thoroughly and leave it on to work its magic for 15 minutes.
  3. Finally, to get the best color take-up possible with gray hair, mix your chosen color with the same number N color. (For example: 25ml 7D + 25ml 7N + 50ml Colorfix.)
  4. Leave the color on your hair for 40 minutes before rinsing.
  5. You can also add a little heat for the first 10 minutes you leave the color on. Use a hairdryer on a low-medium heat setting making sure you apply the heat evenly across your hair.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Tints of Nature be used over another hair color product?
Yes you can, unless your current hair color product contains metals or henna. If your current hair color contains lead acetate, zinc, iron or copper you need to wait at least a month before using Tints of Nature and make sure you give your hair a really good regular shampoo to wash away any metallic residue.

The same thing goes for henna, which leaves a waxy residue on your hair and means it won’t absorb the color properly. Leave it a month, shampoo regularly and then go for a lovely Tints of Nature shade.

If someone has used hair color for years without any problems, why do they need to carry out a sensitivity test before using Tints of Nature?
Good question. The thing is you might become sensitive over time to ingredients used in hair color. So even if you were fine before, you might have become sensitive since then. It’s always worth testing your sensitivity because other factors can affect the results; medication might affect how your body reacts, or if you’ve had permanent make-up or tattoos. If your scalp is irritated or damaged that might cause a reaction too.

That’s why Tints of Nature encourage you to always take a sensitivity test 48 hours before you use Tints of Nature, even though it’s formulated to be very gentle on hair and skin.

Why should someone carry out a strand test when the color result is shown on the box?
The color shown on the box is only our best guide to the result you’ll get with your Tints of Nature color. How your hair actually responds to the color is affected by factors such as:

  • Your hair condition
  • If your hair is already colored
  • How much gray is in your hair
  • If you’re on certain medications, they can interfere with color take-up

It’s a good idea to take a strand test at the same time as you take the sensitivity test. That way you know for sure how your hair responds to the color and you can make sure you’re happy before you go any further. Check out the instruction leaflet in each box for simple instructions on how to do a strand test.

Can any unused color be saved and used for another application?
Yes and no. If you’ve already mixed the color with Colorfix, it can’t be used again at a later date and you should dispose of it. If you’ve got unmixed color left in the bottle that should last for several months – so yes, you can use it again. Just make sure you’ve sealed the bottle properly and store it in a cool place out of direct sunlight.

If someone is pregnant, can they color their hair?

Pregnancy: Most research, although limited, shows that it’s safe to color your hair while pregnant. Some studies have found that very high doses of the chemicals in hair dyes may cause harm. However, these doses are massive compared to the very low amount of chemicals that a woman coloring her hair is exposed to.

Tints of Nature recommend waiting to dye your hair until after the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, when the risk of chemical substances harming the baby is much lower. If you’re coloring your hair yourself, you can reduce the risk further by making sure that you:

  • Wear gloves.
  • Leave the color on for the minimum time.
  • Work in a well-ventilated room.

Highlighting your hair or using “off the scalp” techniques also reduces any risk. The chemicals used are only absorbed by your hair, and not by your scalp or bloodstream.

Semi-Permanent colors are a better alternative whilst pregnant; however a sensitivity test is still recommended.

Do remember that pregnancy can affect your hair’s normal condition. For example, your hair may:

  • React differently to coloring or perming than it usually does.
  • Become more or less absorbent, frizzy or unpredictable.

It’s always a good idea to do a strand test first, using the hair dye or treatment that you intend to use.

Breast Feeding: It is very unlikely that a significant amount of the chemicals used in hair dyes will be passed on through your breast milk. This is because very little enters your bloodstream. In the past, many women have used hair treatments while breast feeding with no known negative results. Tints of Nature recommends following these steps:

  • Wait for 4 weeks after giving birth.
  • Start with a Semi-Permanent color or “off the scalp” method applications.
  • Always do sensitivity and strand tests.

If you have any further medical concerns, please contact your doctor.

Can Tints of Nature be used by people undergoing chemotherapy?
Sadly, Tints of Nature don’t advise you use their products if you’re having chemotherapy, radiotherapy or other forms of treatment. If you do decide to color your hair, have a chat with your doctor first and make sure you carry out a sensitivity test. After you’ve finished treatment, you may be able to color your hair once you’ve got an inch of growth. Use semi-permanent hair color for the first few months until your hair becomes stronger. Tints of Nature always recommend you take both a sensitivity and strand test first.

Having said that, if your scalp is damaged, very dry or irritated, or if your hair is brittle, you still shouldn’t color your hair.

If someone's hair needs coloring but it’s dry and they don’t want to risk damaging it further, can they use Tints of Nature?
Happily, Tints of Nature won’t damage your hair so you are fine to color it. Tints of Nature shampoos and conditioners will help to repair the damage and restore the natural protein and moisture balance of the hair.

Is there a way of removing permanent hair color if you don't get the desired result?
Oops. Yes, but it has to done at a hair salon as they’ve got the special products you need. It’s always a good idea to do a strand test first before full application. You’ll find the instructions in the box.

How can someone darken the ends of their hair without having all their hair colored?
Choose the same color as before, mix 25mls color with 25mls Colorfix in a clean plastic bowl, add a small amount of Tints of Nature shampoo and mix thoroughly. This can be applied to the faded ends with a sponge. Check color after 15 minutes - this should be enough time, add water and work up to a lather. Rinse off then condition using Tints of Nature conditioner.

What is double processed hair?
Hair that has two or three chemical processes on it, like bleach and Hilift colors that use high volumes of peroxide.

The color result is too dark. What can be done?
Tints of Nature always recommend a strand test before the hair is colored, which will indicate the actual color result on your hair. If the hair is too dark after coloring, you can use a saline solution, which will fade the color over the course of a couple of weeks.

Saline solution instructions: Shampoo hair and rinse. Mix 1L of warm water with 2 tablespoons of salt to make the saline solution. Dip a sponge in the solution and run through the hair. Repeat until all the solution has been used – leave in for 15 minutes, rinse, shampoo, rinse and condition the hair. Rinse. These simple steps should release the pigment, but fading may not appear immediately. It can take a few days for the process to become evident. This process can be repeated once a week for three weeks.

Can Tints of Nature be used for lightening hair?
Yes. Tints of Nature will lighten hair by approximately one shade. So, if you’re a natural base 5, then it will lift your hair to around a base 6. To lighten your hair more significantly, use their lightening kit (suitable for medium brown to blonde hair).

How often should you color your hair?
If you’re covering regrowth, they recommend you color your hair when there’s 1 - 1½ inches (3 to 4cm) of regrowth. That’s usually about every four to six weeks, but it depends on how quickly your hair grows.

The color didn’t work on gray hair. What's the solution?
Gray hair that is resistant to color will need to be shampooed first using the Clarifying Shampoo. Shampoo, towel dry well and apply the color to damp hair. You can extend the development time up to fifty minutes. Medication can also be a problem; HRT and Thyroxin can block color. You could also apply very low heat with a hairdryer for the first ten minutes of the development time.

Do any colors contain henna?
No, Tints of Nature don’t use any henna in any of their products.

If you've recently permed your hair, can you use Tints of Nature colors?
It’s a good idea to wait one week before you color your hair after an ammonia-based perm.

Can you go back to ammonia-based hair colors after using Tints of Nature?
Tints of Nature won’t damage your hair, so you should be able to apply another brand of color over the top. But it’s worth checking with the manufacturers of the brand you want to use, to make sure it’s compatible with Tints of Nature.

How do you remove a stain from the color getting on your skin?
Simply use soap and water to wash away any stains.

Is Tints of Nature suitable for afro hair?
Because of the way it’s made, Tints of Nature isn’t likely to be effective on afro hair.

Is Tints of Nature hair color suitable for use on children?
No, Tints of Nature isn’t suitable for anyone under the age of 16.

Do any Tints of Nature products contain heavy metals?
No, none of the Tints of Nature products contain any heavy metals.

Are the sachets of shampoo and conditioner provided with the hair dyes the same as the full-size products?
Yes, the shampoo and conditioner sachets contain the same lovely product as the full-size Tints of Nature Shampoo and Conditioner. But the Clarifying Shampoo isn’t available as a full-size product.

Do Tints of Nature colors contain PPDs?
Tints of Nature permanent hair colors use the maximum amount of natural ingredients and the minimum amount of chemicals possible to create a highly effective product. They only use synthetic raw materials where there’s no natural alternative. They also use the lowest levels of pigment (PPDs) possible to color the hair. Tints of Nature's average level of pigment is just 0.42% as opposed to the legal maximum in the EU of 4%.

PPDs vs PTDs: Some other companies claim their brands are ‘PPD-free,’ safe to use and non-irritating. This can be misleading. For permanent hair color, they have to use PPD or PTD. If they’re using PTDs then these can still cause reactions.

Here’s the science bit:
If you have a permanent oxidative hair color (uses peroxide), then it either uses PPD or PTD (2,5-Toluenediamine Sulphate). The problem is that the reactions to PTD are exactly the same as PPD; the toxicity is exactly the same and the warnings are exactly the same. The real issue is that to create the same color with PTD you need at least 1.5 times the concentration of PTD than of PPD. As an ethical manufacturer, Tints of Nature are concerned that members of the public are being misled into thinking that somehow these ‘alternatives’ are safer and give the impression that skin allergy tests aren’t needed.

What is the clarifying shampoo used for?
Tints of Nature recommends the use of the Clarifying Shampoo prior to coloring in order to achieve the best results; it prepares the hair for coloring by removing any grease, dirt, product residue and unwanted build up in the hair. Make sure you work the Clarifying Shampoo into a lather (which does take a bit of work!!) before rinsing.

After this, hair should be towel dried to remove excess moisture before you begin the coloring process. Bear in mind this is just what they recommend to achieve the best results. If you would rather revert back to the old process then that is fine.

Does ammonia free hair dye damage hair?
Tints of Nature have developed an alternative, much gentler and more effective way to color hair. They use an alkaline moisturizing substance to raise the pH of hair instead of harsh chemicals such as ammonia. Their moisturizer softens and lifts the cuticle slightly to allow the color to penetrate inside the hair, but maintain hair’s essential protein and moisture. Tints of Nature colors don’t take hair as far from its natural point on the pH scale as chemical colors do.

After coloring, their specially formulated shampoos and conditioners return hair to its natural pH level, fully closing the cuticle and leaving the hair undamaged by the coloring process. With a completely closed cuticle, color is securely sealed within the cortex of the hair and there’s much less color fade than with the traditional method.

Do Tints of Nature products contain peroxide?
Tints of Nature Permanent Colors contain a mild and gentle pharmaceutical grade peroxide which is commonly used to sterilize contact lenses. All Tints of Nature Permanent Colors use a 6% (20V) Liquid Peroxide Activator, with the exception of:

  • 10XL which uses a 9% (30V) Liquid Peroxide Activator
  • Highlight Kit which uses a 9% (30V) Cream Peroxide Activator
  • Lightener Kit which uses a 12% (40V) Cream Peroxide Activator (The Lightener Kit comes with a bottle of Naturlite Oil, this is used to protect the scalp during the lightening process and  neutralizes the Peroxide to around 9%)

Please note: Tints of Nature Semi-Permanent Colors do not use peroxide.

Caution: This product contains ingredients that may cause skin irritation on certain individuals and a preliminary test according to accompanying directions should first be made. This product must not be used for dyeing the eyelashes or eyebrows. To do so may cause blindness. The preparation may cause serious inflammation of the skin in some persons, and a preliminary test should always be made to determine whether special sensitivity exists. To make the test, a small area of skin behind the ear or on the inner surface of the forearm should be cleansed, using either soap and water or alcohol, and a small quantity of the hair dye as prepared for use should be applied to the area and allowed to dry. After 24 hours, the area should be washed gently with soap and water. If no irritation or inflammation is apparent, it may be assumed that no hypersensitivity to the dye exists. The test should be made before each application. The hair dye should never be used for dyeing eyebrows or eyelashes, as severe inflammation to the eye or even blindness may result.
