Inspire Conscious Consumption
Seventh Generation's focus is to inspire thoughtful consideration of each purchase—from the immediate impact of the products you buy (Is it safe? Is it gentle on the earth? Does it work?), to the broader impact throughout their lifecycle.
Create A Just and Equitable World
Seventh Generation is committed to making sure that everyone their company interacts with—from the farmers who grow their lavender to the customers who use their products—are treated fairly and with respect.
As suggested by The Great Law of the Iroquois, Seventh Generation strives to act with the knowledge that their business belongs to a larger system in which everything is interconnected, and that everything they do affects everything else.
Seventh Generation believes that the best way to ensure that they live up to their aspirations is to be completely transparent about their business and product practices. You should expect to see all of Seventh Generation's values and principles in everything they make, say, and do. It’s really that simple.
Influence Beyond Their Size

Do Seventh Generation Products Contain Nonyl Phenoxy Ethoxylate (NPE)? What Is NPE? Are There Safety Concerns About NPE?
No, Seventh Generation products do not contain NPE.
NPE stands for Nonyl Phenoxy Ethoxylate. NPE is a synthetic (petroleum-derived) nonionic surfactant (cleaning agent) used in cleaning products. Common applications include laundry liquid detergents and hard surface cleaners (spray cleaners and dilutable cleaners.)
NPE has been determined to be estrogenic. That is, it can mimic the hormone estrogen. In laboratory studies, exposure to NPE has resulted in hermaphroditic (fish with both male and female sexual organs). There is also experimental evidence that NPE reduces sperm counts in rats.
Do You Use Sustainable Palm Oil?
Seventh Generation announced that they have become the first company in their industry in North America to purchase sustainable palm kernel oil certification credits to offset company wide use of the ingredient across its entire product line. By purchasing the credits, Seventh Generation is paying a premium to palm kernel oil producers that use more environmentally responsible practices to produce and harvest palm kernel oil. This credit purchase is an important first step in creating a segregated sustainable palm kernel oil supply chain used in Seventh Generation products.
Does Seventh Generation Have Gluten In Their Cleaning Products?
No. Seventh Generation has implemented a testing program to verify their cleaning and personal care product formulations are gluten-free.
What Does “Biodegradable Formula” Mean To Seventh Generation?
Technically speaking, this means the formula and each of its carbon containing ingredients will rapidly decompose into simple, non-toxic substances in 28 days or less.
About Seventh Generation
Making a Difference
Seventh Generation believes their products are healthy solutions for the air, surfaces, fabrics, pets and people within your home–and for the community and environment outside of it. As a pioneer in corporate responsibility, they want their products to make a difference—from their development through to their production, purchase, use, and disposal. Seventh Generation is always evaluating how to reduce their environmental impact, increase performance and safety, and create a more sustainable supply chain. They believe it is their responsibility to set a course for a more mindful way of doing business, where companies act as partners with other stakeholders to create a brighter future for the whole planet.
John Replogle (rep-luh-gul) joined Seventh Generation in March of 2011. He comes to Seventh Generation from Burt’s Bees, the leading Earth-friendly, natural personal care products company, where he served starting in January 2006 as President and Chief Executive Officer. Prior to Burt’s Bees, John spent three years at Unilever, where he managed the skin care division and helped to launch the Real Beauty campaign for Dove and establish the Dove Self-Esteem Fund.
John’s commitment to conscious consumerism and the triple bottom line factored heavily into his decision to join the Seventh Generation team.
“Business is one of the most powerful instruments for meaningful change on our planet. I believe we’ve only just begun to explore the possibilities inherent in our products, our mission, and ourselves. It will be a privilege to build on Seventh Generation’s 23-year legacy and commitment to the Great Law of the Iroquois Confederacy: In our every deliberation, we must consider the impact of our decisions on the next seven generations.”
An avid outdoorsman, John will be right at home among the lakes, hills, and hiking trails of the Green Mountain State. In fact, his new role at Seventh Generation marks a return to his New England roots where he was raised and educated—first at Dartmouth College, where he earned a B.A. in History, and later, as an MBA student and graduate of Harvard Business School.
A father of four, John and his wife Kristin count Seventh Generation liquid laundry detergent among their favorite products.
