Why is seaweed considered a "superfood"?
Seaweed is one of the most nutrient-dense plants on the planet. It's a great source of vitamins A, B, C, E, and K, and it's also rich in many minerals including iodine, selenium, and iron. It can contain up to 10 times more calcium than milk and eight times as much as beef. Researchers say that the chemical composition of seaweed is so close to human blood plasma that perhaps its greatest benefit might be in regulating and purifying our blood system. Ocean's Halo Seaweed products are also good source of Vitamin B12, wonderful news for all of their vegan and vegetarian fans! Each 20-calorie pack of Ocean's Halo Seaweed Snacks contains 90% of RDA iodine, a mineral that is essential for healthy thyroid management.
What type of seaweed is used in Ocean's Halo Snacks?
Their chips and snacks are made with a kind of seaweed commonly known as gim in Korea and nori in Japan. They only use high-grade, USDA-certified organic seaweed, sustainably harvested from ocean farms off the southwest coast of Korea. While most seaweed in Korea is designated organic by the Korean government, they only use seaweed grown on farms that have been certified by the USDA as organic, and carry the USDA-certification seal.
Do Ocean's Halo products contain GMOs?
No. None of their products contain GMOs. We're on a mission to create the healthiest, most delicious snack food available, and GMOs don't fit into that plan.
Why do you support ocean farming?
They support responsibly managed, sustainable seaweed farms that require no fresh water and no fertilizer to grow their seaweed. These responsibly managed seaweed farms represent a more sustainable way to grow food, especially since seaweed is a "carbon-negative" commodity and one of the fastest growing crops in the world, with a seed-to-harvest cycle of as little as 15 days.
When did Ocean's Halo launch?
Ocean's Halo launched in September of 2013 at the Natural Products Expo East food show, where it was awarded the "Best of Press" award.
What is New Frontier Foods?
Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, New Frontier Foods Inc. was founded in 2011 to leverage the science of superfoods to make ordinary foods delicious and healthy. Ocean's Halo is the first brand launched by New Frontier Foods, and is educating consumers in the U.S. and around the world about the incredible health benefits of eating seaweed.
Who created Ocean's Halo?
Ocean's Halo was created by four dads-two who grew up snacking on chips and two who were raised on seaweed-who are passionate about creating seaweed snacks healthy enough for the produce aisle, but delicious enough for the snack aisle.
Can farming seaweed actually be good for our planet?
Yes, it can! First, the ocean is filled with nutrients that all different types of seaweeds-and, in fact, our own bodies!-need to thrive. On top of that, unlike traditional crops like corn and wheat, seaweed requires no fresh water, no fertilizer and no clearing of the land. Finally, seaweed is one of the fastest growing crops in the world, and they're proud to create a snack made from a food that's good for us and our planet.
What is Cal Prop 65?
Cal Prop 65 is California's Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986. Companies are required to place a warning label on any product they sell within California if it exceeds the level that the State has established as risk free for a list of over eight hundred chemicals. These limits are specific to the state of California and are drastically lower-up to150 times in some instances-limits that the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has indicated as safe for consumption.
Are Ocean's Halo Seaweed Snacks safe to eat?
Yes! These snacks are safe, nutritious, and delicious. Plus, Ocean's Halo Seaweed Snacks are USDA-Certified Organic, Non-GMO Project Verified and use only the finest, sustainably harvested seaweed and other top-quality ingredients. Their manufacturing facility is one of the largest producers of USDA Organic Seaweed in Korea. Additionally, their seaweed supplier is LRQA certified, the gold standard for quality control systems. Some retailers within the state of California choose to label all seaweed products (as well as other ingredients like ginger and brown rice) with the Cal Prop 65 label because seaweed has been known to exceed the level that the state of California has established as risk free for some compounds that are found on a list of over eight hundred chemicals, many of which are naturally occurring. The compounds that exceed the Cal Prop 65 safe harbor limits in seaweed are absorbed from the ocean and include Arsenic and Cadmium. They conduct the Prop 65 Testing with each harvest of Organic Seaweed, to ensure that they know how much, if any, of these Prop 65 compounds are in their products.

Monterey Bay Aquarium
Ocean's Halo is thrilled and proud to announce their new partnership with the Monterey Bay Aquarium, an incredible organization that works tirelessly to inspire conservation of our oceans.
They are now donating 2% of their profits to their Children's Education Fund, which makes it possible for school children to visit the aquarium for free (the only aquarium in the country to do so) and to help instill a deep appreciation for the oceans in future generations.
Seaweed farms require no fresh water, no deforestation, and no fertilizer. A seaweed farm roughly the size of Washington state could provide enough protein for everybody in the world. Today, oceans account for over 70% of the earth's surface, but only contribute 2% of our food. Ocean's Halo is ready to change that.
Four Dads on a Mission
This story starts with two dads who grew up on potato chips and two dads who grew up on seaweed. In 2011, the four of them thought: what if they could make a chip that's tasty and good for you at the same time? So, they experimented in their own kitchens, and did lots of taste testing with their families. Dozens of versions later, they knew they had it: a chip that tastes great and is healthy for you. Since then they added two more seaweed snacks to their lineup.
All of their snacks are packed with vitamins and minerals and have none of the bad stuff like GMOs, trans fats or artificial anything. And guess what? Because seaweed is farmed in the ocean with sunlight, their snacks are a whole lot better for the planet than other snacks out there. They are really proud of Ocean's Halo snacks, and know that your families will love them as much as them.
"When I was growing up, seaweed was on the dinner table every night. It's great to be creating the same healthy goodness for my own kids in a snack they love."
"I'm a native Texan who grew up eating tortilla chips dunked in queso. Who would've thought I'd like seaweed so much?"
"I believe everyone deserves to enjoy life, and that's why we are working to create things that make life a little better-and healthier everyday."
"It means a lot to me and my family that our chips taste great and are made with healthy ingredients that make you feel good."
