Navitas Naturals - Cacao Nibs Certified Organic - 8 oz. (227g)

Navitas Naturals Cacao Nibs Certified Organic are peeled and crumbled from whole cacao beans. Navitas Naturals Cacao Nibs are “nature's chocolate chips." Crunchy cacao nibs provide pure chocolate flavor and they’re a rich source of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and fiber. Cacao nibs are a tasty snack right out of the bag, or add them to cookies, trail mix, smoothies and ice cream.

Cacao (ke-kau, ka-kow):
the dried seeds of a South American evergreen tree (Theobroma cacao of the family Sterculiaceae), which are most commonly used in making cocoa, chocolate, and cocoa butter. Also called cacao bean, and cocoa bean.

Nature’s Chocolate Chips
Cacao nibs are made from pure cacao beans that come straight out of the tropical cacao fruit. Cacao was a culinary treasure to Mesoamericans for thousands of years and touted as the "Food of the Gods" for its superior nutritional profile and exceptional flavor. Navitas Naturals Cacao Nibs are crunchy chocolate just as nature intended, in an easy to use and versatile form.

In ancient Mexican civilizations, cups of cacao brew were prepared for guests of honor and served in opulent golden goblets. Navitas Naturals Cacao Nibs are an incredibly versatile and convenient superfood. You can use them in recipes just as you would chocolate chips in baked goods and treats. Sprinkle them onto cereal, trail mix, yogurt or ice cream or grab a handful right out of the bag for a tasty snack.

Antioxidant Powerhouse
Cacao has been consumed for its invigorating and healthy properties for generations in Mexican, Central and South American cultures. Like all cacao products, Navitas Naturals Cacao Nibs are loaded with antioxidants. In fact, cacao is one of the most antioxidant-rich foods on the planet! Cacao also contains fiber and a number of vital minerals - especially magnesium and iron. An incredibly complex food, cacao also contains unique and potent chemical alkaloids including anandamine, theobromine and phenylethylamine.

Minerals and Antioxidants
One of nature's richest dietary sources of magnesium, cacao nibs are also an excellent source of iron and dietary fiber. You'll feel really great about eating cacao nibs, due to the alkaloids theobromine, phenylethylamine and anandamine, which boost your mood and can make you feel like you're in love!

Product of Peru
Navitas Naturals Cacao Nibs come from Peru, where tropical cacao trees have grown for thousands of years, providing the Incan Empire with a highly nutritious and exceptionally versatile food. They carefully select their cacao beans from small-scale organic cacao farmers in the heart of Peru's forests. Before being tested for micro-contaminants to ensure the cleanest and safest products, the cacao beans are delicately removed from the pod-like fruit, rinsed with purified water and partially fermented. The beans are peeled and gently crumbled to form small “nibs.”

The Truth About Vitamin C In Cacao:
Despite the popular reports circulating the internet, the honest truth remains: even when processed at low temperatures (i.e. "raw"), there is no vitamin C (ascorbic acid) present in cacao.  Recently, highly trafficked websites such as TodayShow.com and MSNBC.com have highlighted the misinformation of cacao’s supposed vitamin C content. Included in these reports are claims that raw cacao is “extraordinarily high in vitamin C.”

Back in 2004, our Navitas Naturals lab tests directly looked for vitamin C content in raw cacao, but came up negative. Despite these results, the current media blitz brought us back again for another round of lab testing of our best-selling raw cacao products (beans, nibs and powder) for vitamin C. This time, we used two different laboratories instead of one, and utilized three different analytical methods: High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Capilary Electrophoresis (CE) with UV detection, and Titration.  Though all three methods have their place in the scientific community, Titration is the most commonly used method in the food industry when determining vitamin C (ascorbic acid) content. However, there is a critical detail within the Titration method many companies miss when testing raw cacao. The method of Titration is unable to differentiate the vitamin C (ascorbic acid) from the vitamin’s analogs. The result is what is known as a "false positive."

This is why, at Navitas Naturals, we use HPLC when testing raw cacao’s vitamin C content. The HPLC method looks directly for vitamin C (ascorbic acid), and not just the analogs. Additionally, after sending samples of our products to another lab to test using the CE method, the reports returned consistent the HPLC results.  Navitas Naturals have now also tested one of the largest raw cacao brands in the United States using the Titration and HPLC methods. And yet again the results confirm our previous conclusion that raw cacao has no vitamin C (ascorbic acid) present.  Cacao is a tremendously beneficial superfood, containing a wide spectrum of minerals and phytonutrients. It is important to be clear however, vitamin C is not amongst these nutrients.

The Power of Cacao
Cacao contains a naturally rich supply of antioxidants, and is also an excellent source of dietary fiber. In addition, cacao is known to be one of the highest dietary sources of magnesium, contains an impressively high iron content, and also possesses many other essential minerals in significant quantities.

For the Love of Chocolate
Ask most people to think about chocolate, and watch a smile instantly appear. Being the ingredient that all chocolate is made from, raw cacao can take commercialized “chocolate” to a whole new level through the alchemy of homemade chocolate confections. Great for both the true chocolateer and health seeker alike, try raw cacao paired with sweet foods of any kind (including raw nectars and syrups, dried fruit, or as a special addition to a dessert recipe) and experience cacao’s beloved chocolate intensity instantly come to life.

About Navitas Naturals

Navitas is the Latin Word for Energy
Navitas Naturals was founded in 2003 to bring energizing superfoods to North America to invigorate the modern ‘Western’ diet. Our organic superfoods come from ancient cultures around the world where they are traditionally used for both nutritional and medicinal purposes. Health-conscious people choose our nutrient-dense superfoods because they are an abundant whole-food source of antioxidants, protein, essential fats, vitamins, minerals and other key nutrients.

Pure & Simple
Nutrient-rich whole foods are at their best when they’re produced by organic agriculture and minimal processing. That’s why all our products are certified organic and use methods such as freeze-drying and low temperature processing to ensure maximum nutrition and flavor.

What is a Superfood?
A superfood is a nutrient-dense fruit or vegetable that contains a high content of antioxidants, protein, omega-3, minerals, fiber or other essential nutrients that have proven health benefits. Nutrient density is the ratio of calories to micronutrients – the vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and phytochemicals that are essential to health, wellness and feeling great. Nutrient-dense foods, like most vegetables and fruits, have a high amount of valuable micronutrients and a low amount of calories. To protect the ‘super’ quality and nutrient integrity, a superfood must be certified organic and minimally processed.

I put in my banana shakes. I'm limiting sugars to those in fruits etc so it's a nice bit of chocolate flavor with no added sugars.
