Frequently Asked Questions
Why Weleda Skincare?
Since 1921, Weleda has pioneered the use of Biodynamic and organic ingredients in skincare and medicines to promote natural harmony and health. Their purest ingredients—natural, organic, Biodynamic and wild crafted—come directly from nature and are cultivated with the loving hands of dedicated farmers throughout the world. They create premier, naturally therapeutic skincare that captures the power and potency of nature. When you care for your skin with their soothing preparations, you will experience a vitality that only nature can bring.
How does Weleda preserve their formulations?
All of their premier formulations are preserved with natural ingredients. They use organic grain alcohol, natural essential oils and pure plant extracts to maintain the life of their products. Furthermore, their unique and recyclable packaging protects each formulation and helps to prevent against oxidation. As a result of these naturally effective preservation techniques, it is not necessary to refrigerate their products. All product life information can be found on the inner and outer packaging.
How do they color and fragrance their products?
Their products are naturally colored with the essential plant extracts that make-up each pure formula. All formulas are naturally fragranced with essential oils and plant extracts. They do not use any synthetic colors or fragrances.
Do they use any synthetic ingredients?
They use only natural oils and plant extracts. All Weleda products are free of synthetic preservatives, fragrances, colorants and raw materials derived from mineral oils, as well as genetically modified organisms (GMO's). Their products are instead full of the highest quality, pure and natural ingredients for your body.
What is Biodynamic agriculture and why do they employ this cultivation method?
Biodynamic and organic farming methods are similar to one another in that they both work to enhance the soil and cultivate plants that are free of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. Biodynamic cultivation, however, goes a step further—beyond organic. Homeopathic preparations are used to enhance the vitality of the plants. Each plant is harvested by hand at its peak, according to the season, time of day, and position of the planets in the universe. At Weleda, they view the earth as an interconnected living organism. Plants, animals and human beings have an inherent and beautiful relationship with one another and their surroundings. Their philosophy—Cultivating Beauty—lies deep within the principle of Biodynamics.
Why do some of their skincare and medicine products contain alcohol?
In homeopathic medicines and tinctures, alcohol is traditionally used to draw out the vital life forces of a plant to create a botanical extract in a specific concentration. Alcohol is also used as a natural preservative in their formulations. They use organic grain alcohol, which is naturally derived from fermented plant sugars. They do not use Methyl or Propyl alcohol—also known as rubbing alcohol.
What is glycerin and why do they use it?
Glycerin is a threefold alcohol found in every fat. They use glycerin derived from the coconut or palm kernel oil. This ingredeint is produced through the saponification process of vegetable oil and soap. It regulates the absorption and release of water, softening and smoothing the skin.
Do they test their personal care products on animals?
Weleda currently does not carry out any animal testing in the manufacture, development or quality control of its natural and organic cosmetics, nor does it commission such testing. The company is fundamentally opposed to the use of animal testing.
Nonetheless, product safety is, of course, paramount. Most of the raw materials Weleda uses have been utilized for many years, and their tolerability is therefore well-documented. Before introducing new products to the market, Weleda carries out extensive in-use studies on volunteer subjects. The formulas are subject to toxicological testing in order to ensure their safety, tolerability and efficacy.
As a manufacturer of pharmaceutical products and natural and organic cosmetics with high ethical standards, Weleda does not carry out any animal testing in the manufacture, development or quality control of its natural and organic cosmetics, nor does it commission such testing. They are fundamentally opposed to the use of animal testing.
Where Beauty Begins
Weleda is farmers. They're up to their elbows in dirt, obsessing about weather reports and analyzing the pH of the rainfall. Not exactly the image that comes to mind when you think of a beauty company, but then, Weleda's not your average beauty company.
At Weleda, beauty isn't something that's made in a lab; it's something that's cultivated right from the earth. Carefully. Lovingly. And certainly without pesticides or chemicals. Those things aren't beautiful to them.
For nearly 90 years now, Weleda has demonstrated that nature can nurture and the earth can heal. And so they grow their organic roses so you can glow youthfully. Weleda gathers golden arnica blossoms to tend to bruises and sprains. They harvest acres of Biodynamic calendula for the comfort and health of newborn babies—and to inspire confidence in their cautious new parents.
Weleda may plow and harvest 135 acres of Biodynamic gardens around the planet. But what they cultivate, really, is beauty.
Weleda's Biodynamic Gardens
Biodynamics: Not a trend, a way of life. Organics aren't some newfangled trend Weleda is jumping on. More like a trend they helped to establish. Weleda set up one of the very first Biodynamic gardens all the way back in the 1920s to provide them with the natural, effective raw materials they needed to make their products the way they knew they should be made.
In these gardens, flowers thrived in the rich, balanced soil, bees buzzed from blossom to blossom, weeds were attended to with natural solutions and gardeners gently trod on the earth, nurturing every living creature. The result: the purest plants, flowers and fruits grown on earth. Remarkably, little has changed in Weleda's gardens since more than 80 years ago. Although, indeed, they've grown a bit since then.
Today Weleda has 135 acres of these Biodynamic gardens in Germany—the Weleda Biodynamic Medicinal Plant Gardens are the largest of their kind in Europe—with more in Switzerland, France, the UK, the Netherlands, Argentina, Brazil and New Zealand, collectively growing more than 300 healing plants and flowers. That's a whole lot of Biodynamic goodness.
Weleda believes that beauty comes from within—and without. There is power in the soil that they till, the organic, Biodynamic and wild plants that they harvest and the essential oils that they extract. So you can be assured they take excellent care of all of them. In fact, their gardens are like their babies; that's why you'll never find chemicals, pesticides or other scary things anywhere near their crops. Pure farming practices make for pure, effective Weleda products. Just the way they've always been.
A Brief History of Biodynamic Farming
In the early 20th century, farmers noticed a decline in the health of their crops and livestock. They turned to renowned philosopher, natural scientist and Weleda founder, Dr. Rudolf Steiner, for help. He, in turn, created the principles that now define Biodynamic agriculture and the entire Weleda philosophy.
Dr. Steiner described each farm as a complete, self-sustaining organism. The soil was “alive,” and if kept in balance, it had the ability to give life to healthy plants. Composting, fertilization and pest control were to be achieved using natural farm resources, and chemicals or growth hormones were strictly forbidden. Farmers were urged to study the natural rhythms of the sun, moon and planets to provide guidance on planting, crop rotation and harvesting.
In other words, take good care of your farm, and it will take good care of you too. Biodynamic farming turned out to be a great success, yielding crops of incredible purity and potency and helping to spawn the organic movement that's so popular today. Weleda sees it as the way farming was meant to be. Which is why they continue to employ its methods as they cultivate beauty around the world.
Growing Weleda's Products
It starts with soil. Beautiful products start with beautiful soil. Weleda keeps chemicals and pesticides out of their Biodynamic gardens, because the quality of their soil will reflect the quality of their products. Even their partners seek out the most gentle, safe farming methods available.
Because life nurtures life, all of Weleda's plants are processed immediately after they're harvested. Weleda's dedicated farmers work with great care to clean the roots, peel the bark and hand-select the best blossoms and leaves. Some plants are kept whole—to treat the whole being—while others are separated into components like roots, seeds, leaves or fruits, each to care for a specific skin-care or medical need.
Grinding, squeezing or cutting fresh ingredients releases their nourishing properties while they're most active and aromatic. Weleda then combine this active plant blend with a solution such as organic alcohol or spring water to create an organic extract called a tincture.
A tincture carries an “imprint,” or life message, of the plant, and herbal or mineral tinctures are powerful enough to have been used around the world for centuries to treat medical needs.
Purity and Protection
Tinctures are an essential component of every product they make, but first they subject them to strict, pharmaceutical-quality controls. In fact, they frequently exceed stringent European laws and certification standards for the personal care and pharmaceutical industries. Weleda wouldn't settle for anything less.
A Beautiful Result
The tinctures can now be blended with other extracts and raw materials to create the formulations that you know as your favorite soap, moisturizing facial cream, soothing eye drops, or gentle baby oil.
