Cinnamon brings a gentle spiced finish. 100% organically grown and fairly traded, Pukka hopes this is the best licorice blend you will ever taste.
The farmer’s back yard seems to be jungle, but on closer inspection it is a well managed organic Cinnamon plantation.Cinnamon trees are native to Sri Lanka and thrive in its hot and humid climate. In the wild the tree can grow up to 20m in height, but when cultivated they are regularly pruned and therefore do not grow much higher than a few meters. The Cinnamon trees are cut back in their second year to encourage growth of finer bark-yielding branches, a process is called 'tillering'. After the 3rd year of growth the trees can be harvested twice a year.
The Sri Lankan method of peeling and drying cinnamon is a highly skilled art. The quills are then laid out on slats to dry. Pukka uses two different types of Cinnamon in their teas: Cinnamon Zeylanicum which they buy organically from Sri Lanka and Cinnamon Cassia which they buy as bark chips from Indonesia and Madagascar. The pieces of bark in the middle is the standard form of dried cinnamon (Cinnamon cassia). The quills on either side are the highest grade that come from Sri Lanka (Cinnamon zeylanicum). The art of cinnamon peeling is passed down from father to son – even the little kid in the photo knows how to peel cinnamon bark!
Fine quality Cinnamon is a very thin smooth bark, with a light-yellowish brown color, a highly fragrant odor, and a peculiarly sweet, warm and pleasing aromatic taste. Its flavor is due to the aromatic oil it contains. Pukka uses their organic cinnamon in their Revitalize and Pleasure teas. Culpepper's herbal advises using a daily draught of cinnamon 'in any convenient liquor' for the prevention of scurvy.
After sorting and milling, the Cassia is taken to purpose built solar driers. Over the years, the Kerinci farming communities have used proceeds from their organic bonus in a number of ways, such as: funding clean drinking water projects, donating rice to Kerinci flood victims, purchasing farm supplies, improving infrastructure and funding community projects.
Currently about 750 farmers participate in this Cassia project, agreeing to honor the park’s boundaries, use organic farming methods and implement conservation practices such as selective harvesting and contour terracing. Cinnamon was so highly prized among ancient nations that it was regarded as a present fit for Kings. The Cinnamon Cassia farmers group project began in 1999 and has developed a sustainable source of certified organic cinnamon Cassia.

Pukka Herbs Frequently Asked Questions
Is it safe for children to drink Pukka herbal teas?
Pukka do not recommend their teas to any child under 1 year old without the advice of a practitioner. This is just a precautionary principle as the herbs can be safely used by anyone but as children's immune systems are still immature they recommend that you take the advice of a practitioner after a face-to-face meeting.
Is it okay to take herbal remedies if I'm about to have surgery?
Pukka advise stopping herbs 7 days before surgery to avoid any complications.
All of their formulas are safe to take for surgery, but due to the associated risk of affecting blood clotting they advise that they are avoided prior to surgery.
Can I drink your teas that have licorice in if I have high blood pressure?
Essentially, Yes. All problems ever associated with licorice have been from eating excessive licorice candy sweets. There is a consensus amongst experts that a safe level of licorice consumption for most people is at least 2.5g per day. The ‘culprit' is considered to be one of licorice's compounds known as Glycyrrhizic acid (GA) that can cause renal sodium retention leading to increased blood pressure in some individuals. The ‘safe' amount of 2.5g per day is arrived at by determining that consuming about 100mg/day of GA avoids any blood pressure effects. The typical GA content of licorice is in the range of about 4% for Glycyrrhiza glabra (European licorice). As the highest percentage of licorice in any of their teas is 25% (Licorice and Cinnamon tea) and the herbs in the teabag weigh a total of 2g, it means that you would have to take 5 cups a day of Licorice and Cinnamon tea to be near to consuming 2.5g of licorice a day and arriving at the 100mg threshold. All of their other teas have less licorice. Please see the information under “Are Pukka teas safe to drink during pregnancy” for more information regarding Licorice and Glycyrrhizic Acid consumption during pregnancy.
