"People ask why I named Justin’s Nut Butter after myself. It’s because I’m proud of every flavor we craft. Because I’ve dedicated years to perfecting my one-of-a-kind grinding process. And because, after all the hard work it takes to make these naturally delicious recipes, I have very little energy to come up with clever names. Just ask my son, Justin, or my daughter, Justin." - Justin Gold, Founder

Justin's Nut Butter Frequently Asked Questions

Is it necessary to refrigerate the jar after opening?
Nope! Justin's Nut Butter recommends storing their nut butters at room temperature so that it is easier to spread. As with any product made without artificial preservatives, they recommend eating their nut butters within a reasonable time after opening (once you taste it, that should not be a problem).

Why is the peanut butter cup discolored, dry and powdery?
The chocolate discoloration or dry filling you may experience with your peanut butter cups is caused by cocoa bloom. Due to the lack of preservatives in their organic peanut butter cups, the peanut butter cups are extremely sensitive to drastic temperature changes. Exposure to cool temperatures following warm temperatures may affect the formulation and, as a result, this may cause the chocolate to appear whitish or even make the dark chocolate look like milk chocolate. This may also result in a dry peanut butter filling. Justin’s Organic Peanut Butter Cups should be kept out of direct sunlight and stored between 55°F and 65°F. While they work hard to ensure that their candy is transported in temperature-controlled environments, once it leaves their facility they cannot always guarantee that it is properly handled.

Are the almond and hazelnut butter jars, squeeze packs and snack packs free of peanut cross-contamination?
Although they do not add peanuts or soy into their almond or hazelnut butters, you will soon see a “contains traces of.. due to shared equipment” statement disclosed on the label because they are produced on machinery that processes peanuts, various tree nuts and soy ingredients for other products. While there is an extensive sanitation process between each batch, the reason for making this change is due to their company’s primary fundamental – safety. Justin's prior and current labels similarly disclose the possibility of cross-contamination. They have chosen to partner with several world-class facilities to produce their high-quality products. Due to high demand, these facilities also process other products containing peanuts, various tree nuts and soy products.

Why does the Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup say “contains milk” when there are no milk products in the ingredients?
Even though there are no milk ingredients added to their delicious Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups and the recipe has not changed, they recently changed their label to indicate “contains milk” because it is produced on machinery that also processes their Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups and White Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups, which do contain milk. While there is an extensive sanitation process between each batch, the reason they made this change is two-fold, both deriving from their company’s primary fundamental – safety:

  1. Justin’s is very careful about choosing and selecting only the highest quality chocolatiers to source not only its dark chocolate but all of the chocolates used in all their products. However, it is common practice for the chocolate industry to process cocoa beans on shared equipment with milk containing ingredients. So while they are extremely careful, the chance of cross-contact exists even before they purchase the chocolate.
  2. In addition to sourcing the highest quality chocolate, they use the best manufacturing practices for safety and quality. Because their Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups share equipment with their Milk Chocolate and White Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups, which do contain dairy, the opportunity for cross-contact as they manufacture the peanut butter cups at their facilities also exists. They felt this precautionary message may help prevent an incident for those extremely sensitive to dairy.

Their prior and current labels similarly disclose the possibility of cross-contamination.

What are the white spots/coating on the surface of nut butter?
What you are seeing in your Chocolate Hazelnut Butter or Vanilla Almond Butter jars is called cocoa bloom. This occurs naturally when the cocoa butter separates, solidifies and rises to the surface of the jar. Although this blooming is not a food safety hazard, and you can definitely stir it back into the nut butter, they understand how the appearance may be alarming.

Do Justin's products contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs)?
Although their peanut butter cups and nut butters do not contain GMOs, the labels currently do not carry a verification by the Non-GMO Project.

Why does Justin’s use palm fruit oil?
They use palm fruit oil because it minimizes oil separation which many consumers prefer. Palm fruit oil contains no trans-fatty acids and much less saturated fat than coconut and palm kernel oil (all of which are still great alternatives to hydrogenated oils).

Is Justin’s palm oil sustainably sourced?
They source two different types of palm oil for their peanut butter cups and nut butters. Justin’s organic peanut butter cups are made with 100% organic palm oil that is sustainably sourced from South America and is RSPO certified. Their nut butter jars, squeeze packs and snack packs contain palm oil that was certified sustainable under the mass balance supply chain model by the RSPO. Recently, this supplier’s certification expired. They proactively removed the sustainable call out from their label in recent months when they learned the certification was set to expire. While this supplier is working to renew their certification, Justin's is diligently looking for a sustainably sourced, RSPO certified alternative. They truly appreciate your understanding and patience, and they will continue to keep their website up-to-date with the latest ingredient information.

Are Justin's nut butters dairy-free? Vegan?
All of their nut butters are dairy-free and most are vegan, excluding Honey Almond Butter and Honey Peanut Butter.

Are there flavors with no sugar added?
Yes, their Classic Almond Butter and Classic Peanut Butter are both no-sugar, no-salt added.

What is the almond pasteurization process?
Almond pasteurization or treatment is US mandated to assure salmonella prevention. Justin’s uses a steam pasteurization method.

Are the squeeze packs recyclable/compostable?
No. Right now there is no technology that exists for a fully compostable or recyclable squeeze pack. They are currently testing multiple, partially renewable squeeze packs.

What does the date on the package correspond to?
All of their products have a one-year shelf life after the manufacturing date, and although it is generally safe to consume after this date, they recommend using their products by this date for optimal freshness!

About Justin's Nut Butter

"The most important thing is just to start. You will never end up anywhere if you don’t start somewhere. If I hadn’t started making jars, it wouldn’t have given me the opportunity to get to where I am today." -Justin Gold, Founder

Starting with a good idea, great ambition, a simple food processor and an affinity for local and natural ingredients, Justin made his very first batches of his now-famous culinary nut butters in his home kitchen.

The Early Years
As a vegetarian living an active lifestyle, Justin was on a mission to create something better. Given that nut butter was a staple in his diet, plain old peanut butter just wasn’t cutting it. He dreamt up his own flavors and an assortment of experimental nut butters began to fill his cabinets. After weeks of hungry roommates stealing his tasty creations, Justin decided to write his name on the jar – and that’s where the real story begins.

Farmers’ Market Success
Justin’s family and friends encouraged him to start selling his nut butter at the Boulder Farmers’ Market. With the help of mentors and extensive research at Colorado University’s Leeds School of Business, he developed his first business plan. The jars of nut butter, filled with passion, were an instant hit at the Farmers’ Market. Justin used this success as leverage to convince select retailers to allow him to stock their shelves and demo the nut butters in store. As a one-man operation, he tirelessly overcame one challenge after another and slowly the business grew.

Hands-on Entrepreneur
Even today, every day is an adventure for Justin. The company has ranked in the top 15 on the Inc. 500/5000 Fastest Growing Companies list in the food and beverage category two years in a row, and has been recognized as Entrepreneur of the Year by Ernst and Young.

I love Justin's Almond Butter- it is all-natural and just tastes great in place of Peanut Butter when you want a milder, less sweet flavor. It tastes just like ground almonds- nothing out of the ordinary, but pure, great flavor.
