Collecting Beeswax On Nature's Schedule
Bees know how to do their job, so Burt's Bees leaves them alone and minds their own beeswax until the time is right. That's how they ensure their beeswax cultivating process protects the Bees' normal production cycle. Bees produce a wax honeycomb where they raise their young and store honey and pollen. When it's full, they cap off the honeycomb and move on to build another hive. Then, and not before, is when they cultivate the beeswax, ensuring the normal cycle of nature.

Burt's Bees Frequently Asked Questions
Are your products hypoallergenic?
There is no defined methodology to test for allergic reactions in beauty or personal care products, nor does the FDA regulate use of the term "hypoallergenic." Consequently, Burt's Bees does not position their products as hypoallergenic. A list of ingredients for each product is available on individual product information pages on this site.

Are your products safe for pregnant women to use?
Burt's Bees recommends that any expectant mother check with her physician before changing her skin care routine with their products, or any other line of products.

How long will my Burt's Bees products stay fresh and what is the best way to store them?
Burt's Bees products are made with natural ingredients. They purposely present our products in smaller portions so you finish them while their ingredients are still fresh and providing their maximum effectiveness. As such, we recommend you store creams and oils in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight and heat. Creams may be stored in their cartons for extra protection.

Where are Burt's Bees products made?
Over 95% of Burt's Bees products are made right in their own manufacturing plant in Durham, NC. The rest are made by other respectable American manufacturers.

Do you test on animals and do your products contain animal-derived ingredients?
Burt's Bees does NOT conduct product or ingredient tests of any kind on animals. A few of their products contain ingredients derived from animals such as beeswax, royal jelly, milk and carmine.

I am allergic to bees. Can I still use your products?
Burt's Bees does not use actual bee venom in their products – only bee by products such as honey, beeswax, royal jelly and honey powder. However, if you are allergic to bee by-products, then Burt's Bees does not suggest using their products. They recommend that you contact your health care provider when changing your skin care regimen to find out which products are best for you.

About Burt's Bees

The Greater Good
Most companies look out for the bottom line. Burt's Bees does, too. In fact, they have a triple bottom line: people, profit, planet. You can't have one without the other two. So when they look after their own, they mean everybody: their employees, their customers, their families, themselves. And yes, the environment, too. Burt's Bees ingredients - right down to the packaging - are simple, natural, and responsible. They practice what they preach - and hope to set the example for others to follow. It's called The Greater Good. And it's how they're going to help change the world.

Philosophy - Nurture the Life of Your Skin
Your skin is beautifully alive. It’s a living, breathing thing - your body’s largest, loveliest organ - and when it’s healthy, it shows. Just as the right mix of foods from the earth nourish your body, the right mix of ingredients from the earth help nourish your skin, giving it a fresh vitality that comes from balance. From the care taken in selecting each ingredient, to the feeling you get from using them, Burt's Bees formulas nurture the life of your skin. They harness the power of nature to help your skin work beautifully.

Nature as Laboratory
The natural ingredients Burt's Bees sources aren’t born in test tubes. Why would they, when nature has billions of years of research to tap into! Blooming and evolving, brilliantly and resiliently for ages, plants have had to continually adapt, developing their own chemistry to maintain vitality in the face of changing seasons and environmental conditions - dryness, humidity, sun, cold. Your skin weathers similar challenges over the course of its life.

You’ve evolved with nature, relying on the plants around you. In fact, human DNA is more similar to plants than different. For example, did you know that you share about 60% of the same DNA as a banana plant? The skin’s own oil, sebum, has similar components to certain plant oils such as jojoba oil. Burt's Bees selects ingredients like these that are skin-friendly yet powerful. It’s like re-connecting your skin to its original, natural life-source.

Do-Gooding is Contagious
In 2007, the Burt's Bees Greater Good Foundation was established - a 501(c)(3) non-profit, organization dedicated to sustaining charitable, grassroots initiatives that support human and honeybee health. Since its inception, the foundation has issued over $1.2 million in grants.

"Working together, we accomplish more." That was true when Burt's Bees started, and it's certainly true today (maybe truer than ever). They support sustainably-minded partners, as well as their local Durham community, through funding and volunteer time. They even give employees paid-time off for community service. These partnerships are a cornerstone of their outreach initiatives, giving them the resources, manpower, and motivation they need to go out and do good for their global neighbors.

History - Burt Shavitz
It was the summer of '84, and Maine artist Roxanne Quimby was thumbing a ride home (back when you could still do that sort of thing). Eventually a bright yellow Datsun pickup pulled over, and Roxanne instantly recognized Burt Shavitz, a local fella whose beard was almost as well-known as his roadside honey stand. Burt and Roxanne hit it off, and before long, Roxanna was making candles with unused wax from Burt's beehives. They made $200 at their first craft fair; within a year, they'd make $20,000. Pretty auspicious beginning - but just the beginning, all the same.

From those first candles to the iconic beeswax lip balm we all know today, Burt's Bees has stayed true to a very simple idea: what you put on your body should be made from the best nature has to offer. Burt's Bees invites you to stick out a thumb and follow them on their uncommon journey - it's been one heckuva ride.

About Burt's Bees

At Burt’s Bees, they scour the good earth to find the most natural, effective ingredients to put in our products. To Burt’s Bees, the word “natural” means only one thing. It means, “harvested from nature.” And they adhere to that definition like the strictest of school teachers. There are ingredients that you will never find in any Burt’s Bees product. Things like petroleum which can be toxic. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, which is a harsh, aggressive ingredient used in certain beauty products. And when was the last time you saw a farmer growing Propylene Glycol? Rather than loading their products up with harsh chemicals or unnecessary fillers, they offer you only the good stuff.

I love this lotion! My 7 month old daughter has moderate eczema... we use this lotion and it works wonderfully and doesn't irritate her skin further like many of the other things we've tried that are supposed to be for baby's eczema. Would highly recommend this item!
