How did Kashi get started? Kashi began with a healthy epiphany. Back in 1984, they discovered the goodness of whole grain nutrition and were so passionate about the newfound knowledge, they wanted to share it with others. After mixing grains and seeds for months, they chose the unique blend of Seven Whole Grains and Sesame for its supreme nutritional profile — a vegetarian source of protein and complex carbohydrates that’s hearty, satisfying, and energizing.
After considering names such as “Gold’n Grains” and “Graino,” we decided on Kashi, a synthesis of “kashruth” or kosher/pure food and “Kushi,” the last name of the founders of American Macrobiotics. Later, they discovered that Kashi has international meanings: porridge in Russian, happy in Chinese, and energy in Japanese.
Kashi means natural, nutritious food to nourish a balanced life. The products reflect their natural beginnings to this day. Here’s how it all began...
- 1983 Grainivores unite
Inspired by the coastal beauty of La Jolla, California, Phil and Gayle Tauber begin experimenting with different whole grains and seeds, trying to create a pure blend that would satisfy a health–conscious lifestyle. After many months, they developed a unique recipe using 7 Whole Grains and Sesame.
- 1984 Kashi is born
Kashi Breakfast Pilaf, their first product, is launched. Though not exactly an overnight success, their passion for whole grain nutrition propels the cereal into grassroots-level sampling, including an appearance at a worldwide sporting event.
- 1985 Cereal goes natural
Kashi 7 Whole Grain Puffs, the first all natural, ready–to–eat 7 grain cereal, hits the shelves.
- 1999 Aiming to satisfy
Answering calls for a satisfying option for weight management, we launch the high–protein/high–fiber GOLEAN line, with GOLEAN original cereal, bars, and shake packets. GOLEAN Crunch!, the most popular cereal to date, joins the family in 2001.
- 2000 The mission expands with a little help from a friend
Kashi caught the eye of the Kellogg Company, who was looking to expand its brand portfolio. Kashi continues to operate independently in La Jolla and now they’re able to make Kashi products more widely available, furthering our dream of a world where everyone embraces natural living.
- 2001 "We Heart You"
Welcome, Heart to Heart cereal! Hearts everywhere warm to this groundbreaking whole grain cereal, the first to support healthy cholesterol.
- 2002 Snacks that love you back
TLC crackers change the snack landscape by offering a tasty break that’s free of highly refined sweeteners, artificial ingredients, and Trans fat. TLC grows to include granola bars in 2005, cookies in 2006, party crackers in 2007, cereal bars in 2008 and fruit & grain bars in 2009.
- 2007 Warming up to frozen
Finally, wholesome frozen entrées! Now you can enjoy convenient lunches and dinners with real ingredients and satisfying flavors — without sacrificing nutrition.
- 2012 Still lovin’ whole grains
Over twenty–five years later, Kashi is still passionate about making the world a healthier place. Their 7 Whole Grains & Sesame blend is their heritage, story, and promise to provide foods that are real, satisfying, and delicious. They truly are 7 Whole Grains on a mission.
What Sustainability Means To Kashi
At Kashi, we dream of a world where everyone embraces natural health. They are passionate and committed to improving the health of people and the planet.
Health isn’t a destination; it’s a journey. Every little step people take creates a healthier path forward. They believe that when people eat well, they feel well, and do well for themselves, their families, their coworkers, their communities, and the world. This philosophy builds on Kashi's deep roots in natural foods since 1984 and remains our daily guiding light.
They are constantly evaluating and improving the environmental and social aspects of their ingredient sourcing, product production, packaging, and distribution. They strive to not only minimize impacts across a value chain, but to create positive impacts and positive change with everything they do, creating a legacy of sustainability and health.
Simply put, Kashi strives to improve the health of people and planet every place we do business.
You have to start somewhere, and when it comes to sustainability, starting at home is a good bet. And that’s how it started for Kashi. While they’ve always been passionate about natural health at Kashi, how this relates to the environment was always kind of “a given” but never fully articulated.
They began to have hallway chats and shared musings over breakfast, and this led to making small changes in how they did things at the office. They implemented a recycling program (which relieved employees from taking home recyclables). They did away with plastic bags in the garbage cans, and set up a composter in their kitchen. They swapped out hand soap and lotion for their favorite natural brands, brought in fair trade, organic coffee and stocked up on mugs and glassware. Bottled water service was replaced with reverse osmosis machines, and they switched their office product supplier to a greener alternative. One thing led to another and our little sparks of ingenuity began to add up. Because they love acronyms as well as double entendres, they named their efforts Project SpArK — Sustaining the Planet And Retaining Kashiness.
As the excitement built around these positive changes, they realized how necessary it was to extend the viewpoint beyond the office. Their products, packaging, programs…everything they did as a company should be considered. Only then did they realize how much they were already doing.
Our Products and Packaging
Kashi designs their foods to not only be tasty, but also provide the best all natural ingredients for good health. In doing so, they try to source their ingredients domestically whenever possible. No matter where their ingredients are grown, Kashi ensures that all of their suppliers meet stringent quality and food safety requirements.
All of the paperboard they source is made from 100% recycled sources, with a minimum of 35% post—consumer content, and is recyclable. Because they are constantly trying to make packaging improvements, new Kashi U cereal is packaged in a carton that is printed with soy ink and contains 80% post—consumer content.
- The Three R’s have led us to work internally on our products and collaborate with other like—minded companies on our journey to sustainability.
Clearly the best package is no package, but admittedly, packaging protects foods. The next best thing is to reduce the amount of packaging used — something that Kashi is conscious of with every new and existing product.
Whenever a product can be put to use again before its disposal, it’s a beautiful thing. That’s why Kashi entered a partnership with TerraCycle, an eco-friendly innovative company that specializes in “upcycling” repurposed packaging into unique products such as tote bags, notebooks, and much more.
- How it works:
Brigades across the country collect their used Kashi packaging from friends, family and coworkers and then send to TerraCycle. Terracycle repurposes cereal cartons, liners, and bar wrappers into cool upcycled products and also makes a monetary contribution to the charity of the Brigade’s choice — It’s a win-win proposition! Kashi brigades from all over the country have sent 202 lbs of used Kashi packaging to TerraCycle for upcycling.
Did you know the U.S. recycles only 32% of all trash? That’s why it’s important to encourage people to recycle and reward those who do. Kashi partnered with RecycleBank to make it happen. Right now, for every specially marked Kashi Whole Wheat Biscuits cereal box you recycle, you can earn 15 RecycleBank Points! As a member of the RecycleBank community, the more you recycle, the more RecycleBank Points you gain. Points are redeemable for valuable Kashi rewards that are exclusive to RecycleBank members.
Since 1984, Kashi has cared about making foods with the health of people and planet in mind. They've stayed true to their 7 whole grain roots and remain passionate about providing a progressive and holistic approach to nutrition. Now they're taking their mission a step further. Today, only 1% of U.S. cropland is organic and around 70% of packaged foods contain GMOs (genetically modified organisms). At Kashi, they want to do their part in creating a more balanced food system. They're still small at heart, but big enough now to make a meaningful impact.
