What is Colic?
2011 Colic Clinical StudyNew clinical study shows
Colic is believed to affect about 20% of otherwise healthy well-fed babies. Colic is a broad term which is defined by its symptoms rather than a particular cause. In general, colic starts around three weeks of age, reaches its peak at around six weeks and then usually begins to lessen around three or four months of age. A baby is described as having colic by episodes of uncontrollable, extended crying and discomfort. Colic crying has been typically described as a high-pitched scream, occurring mainly in the late afternoon or evening but it may occur at other times. Characteristically, an infant’s knees are drawn up to the abdomen, face is flushed, and fists are clenched. Additionally discomfort and fussiness point toward colic. Although all babies can be fussy and show discomfort only a severely fussy baby might be characterized as colicky.
80% of mothers of colicky babies using BornFree™ ActiveFlow bottles reported a significant reduction in colic symptoms within one week!
Identifying the difference between normal and simple fussiness and a full blown colic is very difficult.
Your child's doctor would use the Rule of Three to diagnose the colic infant.
- If the baby cries desolately for 3 hours or more a day.
- Cries desolately on 3 or more days per week.
- Has a pattern of desolate crying that lasts 3 weeks or more.
That means the baby is crying due to colic. When the baby starts crying inconsolably for hours together, it becomes extremely difficult for any parent to wait for three weeks for a diagnosis.
Before you get a confirmation from your baby's doctor you can consider the following to be an absolute symptom of colic:
- If the baby cries and cannot be calmed with any method which you usually do for example feeding, holding, rocking, changing etc.
- Crying in set pattern like in the evening or in the middle of the night etc.
ActiveFlow Bottles & Colic
BornFree ActiveFlow bottles have been clinically proven to significantly reduce colic symptoms.
There is no known cure for colic although studies have shown that a vented baby bottle will help alleviate a baby’s discomfort as well burping your child after feeding. The BornFreeVenting System simple two part venting system is specially designed to reduce the vacuum build-up inside bottles that often can lead to gas, spit-up and painful colic in newborns.
The vent allows a continuous free flow of air into the nipple while the baby is feeding. The free flow silicone air valve incorporated into the BornFreeVenting System breathes together with your feeding baby and starts a steady flow of liquid only when your baby suckles, just like breastfeeding.
ActiveFlow, where babies control their own flow of milk, makes for a comfortable and easy feed for both of you.
