What is whey?
Whey is the liquid component of cow’s milk, which is separated from the solid component, curd, in the cheese-making process. Natural whey contains water, protein, fat, minerals, and lactose. Whey protein products are produced when the protein elements in whey are separated through special filtering processes or by ion exchange. The filtration process removes the lactose and fat and leaves a highly concentrated protein that is dried into a highly functional protein powder. Ion exchange isolates the protein from the lactose and fat due to its electrical charge. The two main types of whey protein on the market are whey protein concentrate and whey protein isolate. Whey protein concentrate protein ranges from 19-89%, typically 80%, and whey isolate contains at least 90% protein. Whey protein is a high quality, complete protein and contains all nine essential amino acids, the building blocks of healthy muscles, skin, nails and other body tissues.

What makes whey protein different from other forms of protein?
Scientists have various methods of measuring protein quality. Biological Value (BV) is a measure of a particular protein’s effect on nitrogen balance (the more positive the better). The protein digestibility corrected amino acid score (PDCAAS) is a measure of how well a particular protein supplies the nine essential amino acids (the more completely the better). Whey protein digestibility corrected amino acid score is 1.14, as compared to 0.94 for beef protein, and its BV is 104, compared to 100 for eggs. In addition, whey protein empties from the stomach and is absorbed into the bloodstream from the intestine faster than other proteins. Due to whey’s quick digestion it has been called the ‘fast protein’ and is the preferred protein to flood the body with amino acids so muscles can begin to recover quicker. Moreover, whey protein contains especially high concentrations of the branched chain amino acids that are metabolized at high rates during exercise—most notably valine, isoleucine and leucine.

Is milk the same as whey?
No. While both are natural dairy products, milk contains ~3.3% protein that is comprised of 80% casein protein and 20% whey protein. In addition, milk contains lactose and fat (removed in skim milk). Whey protein is extracted from milk, leaving the lesser protein--casein--and eliminating most of the lactose and fat.

Does DESIGNER WHEY protein powder contain whey protein concentrate and whey protein isolate?
DESIGNER WHEY Protein products are processed using the most advanced technology available. They contain both whey protein concentrate and whey protein isolate to ensure that you receive a full spectrum of whey peptides.

Can I use DESIGNER WHEY if I am lactose intolerant?
Designer Whey protein products contain extremely low levels of lactose (less than 3%)--much lower than the levels reported to cause discomfort in people with lactose intolerance. A small number of people are allergic to milk proteins. The majority of these individuals are allergic to casein. DESIGNER WHEY does not contain any casein. However, some individuals may also be allergic to other milk proteins, such as lactoglobulin. Whey contains lacatoglobulin, so there is a very small chance of an allergic reaction to whey.

Are DESIGNER WHEY products lactose free?
All DESIGNER WHEY products are 97% lactose free and suitable for most anyone with lactose intolerances.

Do any DESIGNER WHEY products contain gluten?
All DESIGNER WHEY Powders, regardless of flavor, are gluten free. DESIGNER WHEY is a pure whey protein derived from cow's milk, and does not contain any traces of gluten, wheat, corn, rye, or any other grain. There is no possibility of cross contamination as the manufacturing facility they use does not mix or bottle any products that contain any form of grains. Aria Women's Protein, 50% whey combined with 50% soy, is also gluten free.

Do any DESIGNER WHEY products contain peanut allergens?
All of DESIGNER WHEY Protein powders are peanut free and do not come into contact with any peanut products during the packaging process. This applies to all flavors, including Chocolate Peanut Caramel! Therefore you can readily enjoy DesignerWhey protein powders without being concerned about experiencing an allergic reaction.

What is the lecithin in DESIGNER WHEY products derived from?
The lecithin in DESIGNER WHEY products is derived from soy. DESIGNER WHEY contains only 240 mg of soy lecithin per serving of protein powder. If you are allergic to soy this may or may not fall into the same category of soy protein that would potentially disqualify you from consuming this product. It is suggested that you consult your physician to determine whether this derivative of soy would affect you in a negative manner.

What are the sweeteners used in the DESIGNER WHEY products?
All DESIGNER WHEY products are aspartame-free. Instead of aspartame, DESIGNER WHEY products use preferred non-nutritive sweeteners Acesulfame-K, Sucralose, and/or Stevia. Acesulfame-K or Sunett ™ brand sweetener is a calorie-free sweetener that boasts intensive sweetening power (about 200 times sweeter than sugar), high purity and proven safety. Since it is not metabolized by the human body, it passes through the digestive system unchanged.

Sucralose is a non-nutritive sweetener manufactured from regular table sugar (sucrose). Used as a zero-calorie sweetener and flavor enhancer, Sucralose is made by a patented process that makes Sucralose extremely sweet--about 600 times sweeter than sugar--and extremely stable. Sucralose is so stable that, unlike other non-nutritive sweeteners such as aspartame, it will not break down or lose its sweetness when used in cooking or baking (see our recipe section for ideas on cooking or baking with DESIGNER WHEY!). Sucralose is also not metabolized (broken down) by the body's food-digesting enzymes. This means that Sucralose has no calories!

Why is there cholesterol in whey protein?
Since the DESIGNER WHEY Proteins are predominately animal-sourced, they contain a small quantity of naturally occurring dietary cholesterol. Cholesterol is a fatty substance and is necessary for the synthesis of sex hormones, bile acids, and Vitamin D and forms the structure of every cell in your body. Consequently, cholesterol is essential to life. Furthermore, research suggests that saturated fats are twice as powerful in raising blood cholesterol levels as polyunsaturated fats are in lowering them, while dietary cholesterol has a smaller effect on blood cholesterol levels.

Whey protein has been shown to lower cholesterol levels in a number of animal and human clinical studies. Certain bioactive components in whey protein may be responsible for the cholesterol reduction; however, additional research is needed in this area.

With the average life expectancy rising each year, it becomes increasingly important to adopt a nutritious diet and regular exercise program to help maintain a healthy cardiovascular system. Whey protein should be part of that nutritious diet.

Is DESIGNER WHEY Protein safe for children?
Yes. In fact, most children love the taste. Whey protein contains many of the same components found in human breast milk and for this reason, it is a key ingredient in a wide variety of infant formulas. Whey proteins have been found to benefit infants suffering from ailments such as chronic diarrhea, allergies and colic. People of all ages can enjoy DESIGNER WHEY Protein products; however, before making any changes to your diet or exercise routine, it is recommended consulting a physician or healthcare professional to assess your particular protein needs.

Can too much protein hurt my kidneys?
Bodybuilders frequently consume 300-500g of protein per day for months, even years, yet there is no scientific evidence that this high protein intake causes kidney problems. In some studies, animals fed a very high-protein diet for more than half their lifetime showed no kidney damage. High protein intake may be hazardous only for individuals with abnormal kidney function or kidney disease. DESIGNER WHEY is actually used by many patients with kidney dysfunction, because it is low in phosphorus, potassium and carbohydrates, but is high in biological value, and can be mixed in a small amount of fluid and is easily consumed.

For the disease-free individual, the most serious concern with high protein intake is dehydration, because it takes a lot of water to metabolize protein. This effect is easily avoided by drinking 8 or more 8-oz. glasses of water a day. A recent study looked at the effects of a high protein intake on markers of safety in 20 healthy resistance-trained males. The subjects consumed 1.3 grams of protein per pound of bodyweight daily--3.6 times greater than the amount recommended by the RDI. After 28 days the researchers concluded that the daily high protein intake had no untoward or negative effects on the immune system or on renal and hepatic function, nor did it induce ketosis or dehydration.

Why do I need protein?
Proteins are the basic building blocks of life. Protein, and only protein, provides your body with the amino acids it needs to build and repair muscle tissue. Protein also provides the necessary components to keep your immune system healthy and make hormones, enzymes, skin, hair, nails, organs and blood. (Note: the word protein comes from the Greek word "proteios," meaning of prime or of first importance.)

Why should I take DESIGNER WHEY products instead of other proteins?
In a word: results. The whey protein in DESIGNER WHEY Protein combined with its other components has produced bigger and better results than any other protein supplement in history-up. Not only does Designer Whey use three different sources of whey protein to provide a full spectrum of whey peptides, they also provide dairy calcium for its added benefits on fat repartitioning, B-vitamins to help convert protein into efficient energy, and magnesium and zinc in combination to provide great power during workouts. DESIGNER WHEY is a complete protein containing all 8 essential amino acids. And thanks to an advanced micro-filtered ultra-filtered technology, DESIGNER WHEY contains all the major fractions of whey as well as additional fractions with significant health benefits, including glycomacropeptides, which can aid dieters in curbing and controlling their cravings, and lactoferrin, which boosts the immune system.

How can DESIGNER WHEY products help improve my exercise results?
DESIGNER WHEY Protein is the best protein supplement available for athletes and exercisers. Three separate university studies have proven that DESIGNER WHEY increases lean muscle while decreasing body fat. On average, these studies found that DESIGNER WHEY helped slash body fat 5.4 lbs and increased lean muscle mass 18.8 lbs when used in conjunction with a systematic workout program.

Are DESIGNER WHEY products the same as regular 100% whey protein?
While DESIGNER WHEY is derived from 100% whey protein, its formula is designed to produce even greater results. For instance, DESIGNER WHEY delivers a precise blend of three separate, partially pre-digested whey proteins that make up the Full Spectrum Whey Peptide Blend. Peptides have been proven in clinical science to be the body's preferred source of digestible nitrogen. DESIGNER WHEY is also L-glutamine enhanced, providing anticatabolic glutamine in every scoop. In addition, each serving contains B-vitamins, zinc and magnesium, a powerful blend of ingredients shown in clinical research to help increase performance, including improved strength, power, and recovery.

Do any of the DESIGNER WHEY products need to be refrigerated?
All of Designer Whey products should be stored in a cool place, the powders do not require refrigeration. Once the powders have been mixed with water or milk they should be consumed within a half hour. Designer Whey ready to drinks do not require refrigeration until opened. If you want to save and enjoy the rest of your ready to drink later in the day please keep refrigerated.

The history of whey is paired to the history of cheese. That’s because whey is produced as a byproduct of cheese making. But today’s cutting-edge whey protein products—with their amazing range of incredible health benefits—are nothing like the original whey of ancient times. Here’s a brief timeline of the evolution of whey:

  • 6,000 B.C.: Whey is invented accidentally at first when goat’s or cow’s milk goes sour and the curds and whey separate naturally. The curds soon become the earliest cheeses.
  • 420 B.C.: The ancient Greek physician Hippocrates—known as the father of modern medicine—applauds the health-boosting properties of whey.
  • 1650 A.D.: Liquid whey is consumed as a health tonic in Italy, England, and other countries.
  • 1915: Dairy engineers create a powdered form of whey that is more easily digested by humans.
  • 1930: Dairy magnate Robert Kraft commissions scientific research on the health benefits of whey. Researchers at Rutgers University find that whey has a high mineral content and that whey is an effective treatment for rickets and tuberculosis.
  • 1960s: Engineers develop a membrane filtration process that removes lactose particles from whey. The result is a whey product that is much friendlier for human consumption.
  • 1980s: A more advanced filtration process, called microfiltration, is developed, producing fat-free whey products comprising more than 80 percent protein.
  • 1988: The first post-operative hospital formula is adapted for sports recovery.
  • 1991: Ultimate Orange is brought to the market as the first pre-workout energy drink mix with whey protein.
  • 1993: The first instant, flavored powdered whey drink mix is brought to market under the brand name DESIGNER WHEY. It becomes an instant and perennial hit with bodybuilders, athletes and fitness enthusiasts.
  • 1997: The Second International Whey Conference is attended by representatives of 24 countries. They achieve consensus on seven health benefits associated with whey consumption, including antioxidant activity, anti-tumor effects, and an appetite suppression benefit.
  • 2007: New technologies result in an explosion in the variety of commercial uses of whey. Among the most exciting new uses is represented in the launch of Isola, the World’s First Protein Soda. Another innovation is the first stick-pak protein delivery system is introduced. To help and ensure more development in sodas, DESIGNER WHEY patents the carbonated protein.
  • 2008: Whey is made a television star when it appears on the television show Biggest Loser as a way to help with weight loss. Biggest Loser and DESIGNER WHEY form a partnership. Another exciting advancement came with the launch of liquid protein. No longer did powder have to be mixed in, it was now a refreshing drink for people on the go.

Their ultimate vision is a world in which everyone understands and has the opportunity to experience the healthful powers of nature's finest protein source, whey.

Designer Whey's Story
DESIGNER WHEY was created by NEXT Proteins, Inc., a company founded in 1988 to develop and produce superior whey products for fitness-minded Americans. DESIGNER WHEY has been the top-selling whey protein since its introduction in 1993. As the maker of DESIGNER WHEY, they are located in Carlsbad, California.

DESIGNER WHEY is the result of one of the, if not the, most extensive privately funded ongoing whey protein research and development effort in the world. Since 1993, they have spent more than $10 million dollars in innovative Research & Development, clinical testing and product development.

NEXT Proteins was incorporated in Carlsbad, California in 1988 by David Jenkins, a three-time Olympic Silver Medalist from Great Britain who remains the company President and CEO. In 1993, the company's flagship product, DESIGNER WHEY, was brought to market. DESIGNER WHEY has remained America's top-selling powdered whey product ever since.

Since 1993, nothing has been more rewarding to us then being part of whey protein products representing an industry that now accounts for billions of dollars in annual sales. An industry that scarcely existed before DESIGNER WHEY launched the world's first whey protein drink mix in 1993.

We live in a time of unprecedented health-increasing opportunities, but also a time of immense challenges to the health and well being of every human being. On the one hand, advances in medicine have eliminated many diseases and led to steady increases in human longevity. In addition, our ever-expanding knowledge about nutrition, exercise, and other lifestyle factors has made it easier to make better choices for our health and longevity.

On the other hand, health issues that were rare in the past now plague us. Sedentary lifestyles and a glut of high-fat processed foods have resulted in an epidemic of overweight and obesity. For the first time in history the average American lifespan is in danger of decreasing due to this epidemic.

To meet the challenges of health in this time, every facet of society has to do its part. Unfortunately, Social Security and Medicare won't be able to cover the costs of today's obesity epidemic. Individuals and families need to educate themselves in order to make more responsible, informed choices. Because whatever the government should and could be doing to create and implement intelligent, practical policies to address the unique health issues of the present age, they aren't. America's health burden and these responsibilities have been passed onto businesses large and small.

DESIGNER WHEY takes their role in this responsibility very seriously. Their company goals begin and end with helping people live longer, healthier, more fulfilling lives.Whey protein is one of the most nourishing and powerful functional foods in existence. Today it is proven to reduce appetite, lower blood pressure, improve body composition, enhance the benefits of exercise, aid in recovery and much more. Whey protein may be nature's best kept secret.

Since 1988, DESIGNER WHEY has been hard at work not just creating the highest quality whey protein products, but educating people everywhere about the benefits of whey. Through these unparalleled efforts, DESIGNER WHEY continues to have a significant, life-changing impact on the health of countless men, women and children. They feel pretty good about that.

DESIGNER WHEY came to be because they saw an important opportunity to change lives for the better with the development of premium-quality whey protein products. They believe that if they keep their focus on improving lives with whey, the bottom line and their vision will take care of itself.

It is such a great idea to have a one portion package for those trying to release pounds, but the flavor was not that satisfying. It was pretty ordinary, but not bad.
