What is Spirulina? Spirulina is a microscopic plant without leaves, seeds, or flowers, growing by the hundreds in a single drop of water. This spiral shaped fresh-water plant derives its energy from the sun. Scientists classify it as one kind of blue-green algae. Spirulina has been eaten by humans since prehistory and is now cultivated worldwide as a healthy food.
Where does Earthrise get Spirulina? Earthrise grows all of its Spirulina on our own farm in the southeastern California desert.
Who should use Spirulina? Women, men, people on the go, retired people, parents, athletes; most anyone subject to stress wanting a healthy, active, lifestyle. (If you have a medical condition or are on medication, consult a health care practitioner before using this product).
Does Spirulina support the immune system? Yes! Clinical studies show Spirulina supports the immune system, and a healthy inflammatory response.
Does Spirulina protect heart health? Yes! Clinical studies show Spirulina supports a healthy cardiovascular system, and protects from oxidative stress.
Does Spirulina protect brain health? Yes! Scientific studies show Spirulina protects the brain from various kinds of oxidative stress.
Does Spirulina protect from oxidative stress? Yes! Most antioxidants you are familiar with - vitamins such as E or C, selenium, and most phytonutrients such as those in tea, or red wine - act as scavengers of oxidant molecules; they try to clean up oxidizing free radicals after they have been created. Spirulina's super blue protein, phycocyanin, is different. Although it's an efficient scavenger of oxidants, Spirulina, phycocyanin, and its' component phycocyanobilin, (like their chemical relatives hemoglobin, bilirubin and biliverdin), affect some of the major sources of oxidant stress. Visualize a faucet struck open; water fills the basin splashing onto the floor. Think of the water on the floor as oxidant stress; pouring, filling and overflowing our cells. Most antioxidants act like mops - though typically each antioxidant can work on only part of the "floor". In contrast, Spirulina simply shuts off the faucet, and mops up the spills!
Can Spirulina give me more energy? Consumers say it helps them feel more energetic. Spirulina is not a stimulant and is low in calories. Try it and feel what others are saying.
When purchasing a brand of Spirulina, what factors should I consider?
American grown to assure safety.
The Phycocyanin (super blue protein) content.
Glass packaging to assure freshness and optimum nutritional potential.
Is Spirulina Gold Plus better than other Spirulina's? Yes. Spirulina Gold Plus is clinically tested. It has higher amounts of phycocyanin plus natural vitamin C in the form of organic Acerola berry extract and zinc.
How does Spirulina differ from Chlorella? Spirulina is more digestible than Chlorella and Spirulina contains the blue protein phycocyanin. Much more published scientific and clinical evidence supports the use of Spirulina compared to Chlorella. Both Spirulina and Chlorella are good for detox and cleansing. In addition, Spirulina has been determined to be generally recognized as safe through scientific procedures with FDA review. Chlorella does not enjoy that status.
What are the benefits of Chlorella? It is great for natural detox of the body.
What are the benefits of Green Blends? A blend of the green superfoods Spirulina, Chlorella, wheat barley grass and more.

How much Spirulina should I take and when? The answer may not be the same for everyone. A human clinical study suggests just two grams per day may provide significant benefits. Three grams per day provides 100% of the RDA of Vitamin A in the form of beta-carotene. Human clinical studies indicates 6 grams per day may provide increased protection from oxidant stress. Spirulina should be used as a part of a balanced diet. More than 30 grams per day may result in dietary imbalances. Take Spirulina with or between meals.
Can I take Spirulina with other supplements? Yes! Especially probiotics and Omega-3s.
How can I take Spirulina, Green Blend or Chlorella? If tabs or caps, take with plenty of fluids. If powder, simply add a spoonful to boost your smoothie, juice or sports beverage. Stir and enjoy.
Ecologically Grown for 100% Purity and Safety at the World's Largest Spirulina Farm
Merging U.S. and Japanese innovation, technology and resources, Earthrise operates the world's largest Spirulina farm on a 108-acre site to supply over 20 countries with the world's best known Spirulina. In the clean, sunny California desert, Earthrise Spirulina yields more nutrition per acre than any other food. Ecologically grown, free of pesticides and herbicides. Dried in a few seconds to preserve full nutritional value. Every day, farm scientists conduct dozens of rigorous quality control tests to ensure that our high quality exceeds all international food standards.
- Keeping Out Weed Algae
Hundreds of aquatic organisms can bloom in nutrient rich water in warm sunshine. Weeding out unwanted microscopic algae is a difficult task. Preventing weed algae from taking over is the key to growing a pure culture. Earthrise scientists accomplish this without toxic chemicals, using a specially designed pond system and balancing the pond ecology.
- Ecological Pond Cultivation
In this remote and sunny part of California, far from cities, highways and airports, the air is clean. Mineral rich Colorado river water, which supplies seven states of the U.S. Southwest, is pumped through canals, to large settling ponds, through filters into the growing ponds.
- Long Paddlewheels Mix Water for Optimum Growth
Our 30 Spirulina ponds have food-grade liners. Each is 5000 square meters, or over an acre, in size and larger than a football field. Clean, fresh water and nutrients are added daily to feed the algae, mixed by 50-foot paddlewheels in each pond.
- Carbon Dioxide Is Bubbled into the Water
Plant leaves take in carbon from the carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere, but algae need carbon in the water. Algae grows so quickly that atmospheric CO2 cannot penetrate the water fast enough to sustain growth, so carbon must be added. The same high- quality CO2 used in carbonated drinking waters is pumped directly into the ponds.
- Pure Mineral Nutrients Feed Growing Spirulina
Adding extra manure or organic matter directly into the water can foul the shallow ponds and disturb algae growth. Instead, clean and pure sources of mineral nutrients are used. Premium quality minerals like nitrogen, potassium, iron and essential trace elements nourish a consistently high quality Spirulina.
- Continuous Fresh Harvest
During the growing season, April through October, ponds are harvested every day. In the peak summer sun, harvesting occurs 24 hours a day, to keep up with the explosive growth rate.
- 15-Minute Journey from Ponds to Powder
In its quick trip through our stainless steel harvest and drying system, the product is never touched by human hands. The first screen filters out pond debris, and the next screens harvest the microscopic algae. Nutrient rich water is recycled back to the ponds. Then a final filter thickens Spirulina from green yogurt to green dough. It is still 80% water inside the cells and needs to be dehydrated immediately.
- Quick Drying Preserves Nutrients
Spirulina droplets are sprayed into the drying chamber to flash evaporate the water. Dry powder is exposed to heat for several seconds as it falls to the bottom. Then it is vacuumed into a collection hopper in the packaging room. This quick process preserves heat-sensitive nutrients, pigments and enzymes with no preservatives or stabilizers.
- Sealed In Special Oxygen Barrier Containers
The final Spirulina powder has a high content of heat-sensitive phycocyanin, attesting to the drying quality. Fresh dried Spirulina can be stored for four years or more in special oxygen barrier containers, retaining nearly full beta carotene potency.
- Tableted and Bottled Finished Products
Fresh Spirulina powder is directly cold compressed into tablets, without heat or granulation. Using the latest bottling technology, machines automatically fill protective glass bottles. These are then sealed and packaged for shipment to customers.
About Earthrise: Origins & History
Earthrise's roots go back almost 25 years as the pioneers in Spirulina production. Today they offer a solid base of quality Spirulina and Spirulina-based products, with distribution in over 20 countries around the globe. In 1976 a group of U.S. visionary pioneers, founded the progenitor of Earthrise, Proteus Corporation, to develop Spirulina blue-green algae as a world food resource. Proteus was funded by a group of private California investors committed to the vision and hope Spirulina represented. This team began cultivation in the hot desert area in Southeastern part of California in the late 1970s. In 1982, Earthrise developed a partnership with a Japanese company, Dainippon Ink and Chemicals, Inc. (DIC), a global, diversified chemical company with a commitment to developing microalgae for food, biochemicals and pharmaceuticals that had just begun growing Spirulina in Thailand. This unique partnership between California entrepreneurs and Japanese corporate intrapreneurs flourished to a dynamic growth of Spirulina production as well as its market worldwide. Today, Earthrise's farm is the world's largest Spirulina farm, and together with their sister companies' farms in Thailand and China, DIC group is the largest Spirulina producer in the world.
