Seven whole grains on a mission. It’s more than just a tagline — they’re the very words Kashi lives by.

With so many grains to choose from, why eat just one? Kashi's blend of 7 whole grains provides protein, fiber and an assortment of vitamins & minerals you can’t find in single-grain foods.

What exactly are whole grains? Simply put, they are small, edible seeds that come from grasses such as wheat and barley. As long as all of the grain components are present, from the outer shell to the “germ” deep inside, whole grains can be ground, cracked, or flaked, and still retain their benefits.

Grains are made up of three main components: the bran, the endosperm, and the germ.

  • Bran, or outer shell, protects the seed and provides fiber, B vitamins, and some trace minerals.
  • Endosperm is most of the inner body of the seed . It is rich in protein and carbohydrates—basically a concentrated energy source.
  • Germ makes up the remaining part of the seed; it contains vitamin E (a potent antioxidant) as well as other antioxidants and B vitamins.

All of the grain’s nutrients, phytochemicals (health-protective components of plant foods), vitamins, and minerals work together to help you stay healthy. Unfortunately, some food makers and restaurants rely mainly on refined grains, in which the seed is stripped of its bran and germ (and the bulk of its nutrients), leaving only the endosperm’s carbohydrates and protein. In some instances, food makers will attempt to enrich these refined grains by adding back some of the vitamins and minerals that were lost during processing.

When food is made at Kashi, they always strive to preserve the nutrients that occur naturally in the ingredients. The 7 whole grains in this blend are minimally processed, which means every part of the grain—along with its nutrients—are included, so you get a great nutritional bang in every bite.

Kashi 7 Whole Grains inspire nearly every food they make. So why not 6, or even 8 whole grains… How’d they land on 7? Good question. Back in 1984 their founders played and experimented with different grains until they finally found a perfect blend of the seven that we still use today.

Each of the seven whole grains they’ve selected for this blend has its own distinct personality and brings something unique to the mix. From digestion helpers to cholesterol combatants, from diet assistants to vitamin victors, every grain offers something different. When combined in the Kashi blend they create a healthy mix of textures, shapes, sizes and flavors. Kashi also selected sesame seeds to star in the original Kashi blend for their superior nutrition.

  1. Barley: Known for its smooth, nutty flavor, barley is one of the oldest cultivated grains in the world. It is a good source of heart-healthy soluble fiber, and in certain instances it can help reduce the risk of coronary heart disease by helping to lower bad cholesterol.
  2. Buckwheat: This is the only seed known to have high levels of an antioxidant called rutin, which studies have shown improves circulation and helps prevents LDL cholesterol from blocking blood vessels. Hearty in flavor, buckwheat is also a good source of fiber.
  3. Hard Red Wheat: Wheat is described as “hard” or “soft” depending on its protein content. Hard wheat generally has approximately 12-15 percent more protein than soft wheat. (“Red” or “white” simply describes the color of the kernels.) Because of its high protein content, hard red wheat is often used to make bread.
  4. Brown Rice: Rice is one of the most easily digested grains, which is why rice cereal is often recommended as a baby’s first solid food. It’s hypoallergenic and gluten-free, so it’s ideal for people on restricted diets or who are gluten-intolerant. Brown rice has a lovely nutty flavor.
  5. Oats: Oats bring a natural sweetness, as well as soluble fiber, to our mix. They also contain a special kind of fiber called “beta-glucan,” which studies have found can help lower cholesterol. According to recent research, oats also have phytonutrients called “avenanthramides” whose antioxidant properties help protect blood vessels from the damaging effects of LDL cholesterol.
  6. Rye: The amount and type of fiber in rye helps promote a feeling of fullness, making it a good choice for weight management. Rye is also prized for its distinctive, earthy flavor.
  7. Triticale (trit—i—KAY—lee): The new kid on the block, this hybrid grain combines the best qualities of wheat (nutritional quality, efficiency and disease resistance) and rye (vitality and hardiness) into one grain. Triticale can range in color from tan to gray-brown and has long, plump kernels. It contains the protein found in both its parent grains and has high levels of leucine, an essential amino acid.
  8. Sesame: Seeds, like grains, play a role in our foods by providing diverse nutrition and flavors. Sesame seeds are high in protein and contain manganese, copper and calcium, as well as vitamins B1 and E. These mighty seeds also contain “good” monounsaturated fats that can help lower bad (LDL) cholesterol. We chose this nutrient-packed seed as part of our original Kashi blend for its delicate, nutty taste.

Many of the folks at Kashi don’t know where Kashi ends and they begin. Kashi is more than products in packages — it’s a way of life.

Kashi is a small (after 25 years, still fewer than 70) band of passionate people who believe right down to their bones that everyone has the power to make positive changes in their lives. They think getting healthy starts with taking little steps, like choosing healthy all natural foods. Kashi is about embracing and living your best life.

Kashi began with a healthy epiphany. Back in 1984, the founders, Phil and Gayle Tauber, discovered the goodness of whole grain nutrition and were so passionate about this newfound knowledge, they wanted to share it with others. After mixing grains and seeds for months, the Taubers chose the unique blend of Seven Whole Grains and Sesame for its supreme nutritional profile — a vegetarian source of protein and complex carbohydrates that’s hearty, satisfying, and energizing.

After considering names such as “Gold’n Grains” and “Graino,” they decided on Kashi, a synthesis of “kashruth” or kosher/pure food and “Kushi,” the last name of the founders of American Macrobiotics. Later, they discovered that Kashi has international meanings: porridge in Russian, happy in Chinese, and energy in Japanese.

Kashi means natural, nutritious food to nourish a balanced life.
