Frequently Asked Questions
What are fruit-juice concentrates?
Fruit juice concentrates are fruit juices with most of the water removed. Most whole fruit juices naturally are 80 percent to 90 percent water.
How are R.W. Knudsen Family Juice Concentrates manufactured?
During the harvest, the ripened fruit is picked, thoroughly washed and pressed into juice. The fruit juice is concentrated by being placed in a low-pressure chamber, which draws off water with a minimum application of heat. They only add water to the juice concentrates to reconstitute them into whole fruit juice.
Why use fruit juice concentrates?
There are two main reasons they use fruit juice concentrates:
- Variety: Although R.W. Knudsen Family presses many fresh fruits into juice, the use of fruit juice concentrates has enabled them to offer a variety of innovative juice-blend flavors.
- Quality: R.W. Knudsen Family concentrates are produced when the desired fruits are at their best quality. This allows R.W. Knudsen Family to combine Oregon-grown strawberries that are at their peak of perfection in June with California-grown apples that are ripe in September.

What are natural flavors?
Natural flavors are generally sourced from botanical ingredients, such as fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices. The use of natural flavors serves two purposes: First, it increases the impact of the fruit character and taste, adding "flavor notes" not possible from the juice by itself. Second, it provides a special flavor that makes their juice-blend recipes different from other brands.
What do the natural flavors contain?
Their natural flavors are generally derived from botanical sources. As important as it is to know what the natural flavors contain, it also is important to know what they do not contain. Their natural flavors do not contain refined sugars, preservatives, artificial flavors, petroleum derivatives or monosodium glutamate (MSG). All of R.W. Knudsen Family suppliers provide signed affidavits certifying their products do not contain any of the aforementioned ingredients.
How long can you keep an opened bottle of R.W. Knudsen Family juice?
For the best quality and freshness, they would suggest consuming their R.W. Knudsen Family juices within 10 days after they are opened and refrigerated.
Who certifies R.W. Knudsen Family juices as organic?
Quality Assurance International performs their organic certification. QAI is an accredited certifying agent under the USDA's National Organic Program.
What is the definition of organic?
R.W. Knudsen Family products labeled "organic" contain at least 95 percent organic ingredients, excluding water or salt. These products are labeled "organic" and carry the USDA seal on the primary display panel.
From where does R.W. Knudsen Family source its raw ingredients?
Quality products begin with quality ingredients and they employ comprehensive procurement procedures to ensure their products contain only the finest ingredients from reputable suppliers.
In the majority of cases, they source their ingredients from within the United States; some items, however, are not available within the domestic supply chain and are sourced from outside of the country. Commitment to Organic
They have been using organic ingredients long before many consumers knew what "organic" meant. They came to organics because of their enduring commitment to reduce the amount of synthetic pesticides and herbicides released into the environment. Their company has served as members of the Organic Trade Association, supporting the organic industry through high standards, since the Association's inception in 1985. In 1997 they were the first processor in the country to volunteer to become a certified organic processing facility.
About half of their products are made with 95% or greater certified organic ingredients. They support organic agriculture around the world, and as an organic handler, they follow strict handling practices and procedures, including tracking all organic materials from receipt of incoming ingredients to sale of finished products. Their processing facilities are inspected by an independent auditor to verify they are in compliance with the National Organic Program.
They are dedicated to minimizing their total environmental footprint through significant investments in energy efficiency at their facilities and by using clean renewable energy sources on site. They have invested millions of dollars in energy efficiency and renewable energy sources at their own facilities. They also capture all the waste heat from their power generation to assist in the pasteurization process of their production lines. The current installation of a 200 Kilowatt solar energy array, in combination with their other on-site power generation, has provided more than 20% of their Chico plant's energy through renewable sources since 2010.
