    Sourcing Beyond the Garden
    Unlike botanicals like calendula and nasturtium, some plants flourish in their native habitats where they can best develop their natural qualities. Eyebright is one such plant. To source this botanical, they commission a wild collector (with a permit from the local environmental authorities) to harvest wild eyebright in the southern Vosges Mountains at an altitude of over 3,900 feet. They do so using a very conservative and conscientious approach: They never harvest the entire meadow and regularly change the collection sites, ensuring that natural growth is not depleted while still obtaining enough eyebright for Dr. Hauschka Eye Revive, Eyeliners and Mascaras.

    Their employees pass through two airlock gates to enter the manufacturing section of the building where Renewing Night Conditioner ampules are filled in accordance with the hygiene regulations for pharmaceutical products in Germany. A constant downward air stream protects the valuable ampules against dirt. These ampules contain the plant extracts rhythmically processed from the botanicals hand-picked by their gardeners.

    With his rhythmitised, water-based plant extracts, Rudolf Hauschka developed groundbreaking new pharmaceutical manufacturing processes. Even today, they still use his original procedure to produce their extracts: They chop freshly harvested plants, mix them with water for seven days, subject them to polarities of light and darkness, warmth and cold, and rest and movement, then press and filter them, sometimes adding a little ash to the pressed residues. The extract now contains the essence and the beneficial properties of the plant – and can be preserved for many years. The manufacturer of Dr. Hauschka Skin Care’s name reflects their special manufacturing methods: WALA stands for Warm Ash and Light Ash.

    A rhythmical manufacturing procedure is also used to create oil extracts and aqueous alcohol-based essences for their skin care products. During this procedure, the oil extracts are subjected to a warming stimulus. Dried plant components, such as rose buds, are carefully transformed into oil at a temperature of 98.6oF, human body temperature.

    Pioneers and "Rebels"

    The manufacturer of Dr. Hauschka Skin Care began exclusively as a developer of natural medicines in 1935. In the early days of its history, the company was considered avant-garde and pioneering in a society that was barely aware of homeopathic preparations.

    This was not the case everywhere. Anthroposophic doctors were one of the primary groups to enthusiastically seize upon Rudolf Hauschka’s procedure for producing natural medicines without using alcohol as a preservative. The demand for his preparations encouraged Dr. Hauschka to establish his company in 1935 and open subsidiaries in Vienna and London shortly thereafter. Following a ban by the Nazi Party and the imprisonment of Dr. Hauschka and his future wife Dr. Margarethe Stavenhagen, the company was relocated several times before finally settling in Bad Boll/Eckwälden in 1950, where its offices, gardens and farms remain today.

    For years, Dr. Hauschka considered launching a natural skin care range to complement his medicines, however, his ideas only became a reality in the early 1960s when he met Elisabeth Sigmund, an esthetician who had been using WALA remedies in her own skin care products. At Dr. Hauschka’s invitation, Elisabeth Sigmund travelled to Eckwälden from her home in Stockholm to work with Dr. Hauschka’s experts to develop facial care products that support skin health as a means of achieving beautiful skin. They jointly created solutions for stable cream bases without chemical and/or synthetic emulsifiers and scented with natural essential oils.
