A recent study shows that increased intakes of anthocyanins, an antioxidant pigment from fruits and vegetables, may reduce blood vessel hardening and improve overall health.

Higher intakes of anthocyanins were linked to lower stiffness of the arteries and improved blood pressure according to finding published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Results showed that the highest average intake of anthocyanins was directly associated with significantly lower systolic blood pressure, while arterial pressure was also significantly improved.

Anthocyanins are a class of secondary plant metabolites called flavonoids and are commonly found in many fruits and berries. They are known for their properties as pigments and antioxidants properties.

Antioxidants are disease fighting compounds that scientists believe help repair and prevent the stress of oxidation, a process that occurs naturally during normal cell function.

The multiple benefits from berries have been known for years but it’s always encouraging to see new studies supporting previous claims. Sometimes labeled “super berries”, many berries have been widely used for supplements, ranging from the most common berries such as blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, and cranberries as well as more exotic berries such as açaí, and goji. Many fruits and vegetables contain high amounts of antioxidants but berries won easily in terms of the amount of antioxidant for the price.
