There are many debates about the benefits of Krill Oil Vs. Fish Oil, as krill oil is a new generation of fish oil that is starting to gain the spotlight. Krill oil is the oil from a crustacean that feeds off algae in deep ocean waters. Both fish oil and krill oil contain Omega-3 Fatty Acids like Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA).

Some claim that fish oil contains more EPA and DHA than krill oil. Looking more deeply; however, one will find that the Omega 3’s of krill oil are stored on a triglyceride. Research shows that 30% to 65% of the fatty acids are incorporated into phospholipids, which may increase the availability of the Omega-3’s to the body. So although it may be true that krill oil has lower levels of Omega 3’s, research has shown that krill oil and fish oil have comparable sources of Omega 3 Fatty Acids. This is due to the fact that body can more easily absorb the krill oil.

One of the major health benefits known about fish oil supplementation is its benefit for cholesterol levels. One study found krill oil more effective than fish oil in improving cholesterol levels, triglycerides, and blood glucose. Another study found that daily doses of 1-3 g of krill oil are significantly more effective than 3 g EPA/DHA fish oil, specifically in the management of hyperlipidemia.

Other health benefits of krill oil include preventing oxidative stress and decreasing inflammation. Some studies have even shown that krill oil is more effective than fish oils in decreasing symptoms of PMS. So although fish oil may be in the spotlight right now, krill oil may be the future.
