Best Turmeric Supplement: How to Choose

Turmeric is having a moment. Although used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine, the potent root is in the modern limelight for its many therapeutic uses.

If you’re interested in adding a turmeric supplement to your routine, you may be overwhelmed by the amount of products on the market today. Tablet or capsule? Gummy or powder? Wait—what’s “golden milk,” anyway?

We’ve got you covered. Read on for tips on how to choose the best supplement for your needs, as well as a curated selection of some of the purest, most powerful formulas available.

What Is Turmeric Curcumin?

First, let’s start with the basics: What exactly is turmeric, anyway?

A close relative of ginger, the turmeric plant is native to India, Asia and Central America. It’s commonly harvested and used as a spice, and is a staple ingredient in curry powders and Indian cuisine. Turmeric’s active ingredient, curcumin, is responsible for its signature fiery yellow hue.

But curcumin does far more than stain countertops.

“The curcumin in turmeric may help reduce inflammation and can be useful for treating pain or skin irritation,” says Beth Auguste, a Philadelphia-based registered dietitian and owner of Be Well with Beth.

Additionally, studies have shown that curcumin may support joint health, improve memory and aid in weight control (1), among other benefits.

Turmeric curcumin supplements can deliver the same benefits as the spice. But to truly reap the benefits of turmeric, it’s important to select the right supplement.

How to Choose a Turmeric Curcumin Supplement

Turmeric curcumin supplements are available in a variety of forms, including pills, capsules, gummies, tonics and powders.

While effective turmeric supplements are available in each form, not all supplements are created equal. Because curcumin itself is difficult for the body to process, it must be combined with other ingredients to be truly effective—a step that lesser quality supplements may skip.

“Curcumin is noted for its weak bioavailability,” says Dr. William Howrilla, a chiropractor and certified functional medicine practitioner. “This means that the body has trouble both absorbing it and metabolizing it, so you want to make sure that it is formulated with other synergistic ingredients that help it work better.”

Piperine, an extract from black pepper, naturally enhances turmeric absorption. Selecting a supplement with piperine—as well as adding black pepper to your curry powders and turmeric recipes—will increase the potency, says Dr. Jeremy Wolf, a licensed naturopathic physician.

“Companies that go the extra mile to make cleaner products without the unwanted junk often use more active and quality forms of supplements,” adds Wolf.

Dosage depends on the individual supplement and your goals in taking turmeric. For example, studies have shown that high doses of turmeric may reduce symptoms of some cancers, neurodegenerative disorders and bowel diseases (2). However, these doses would be inappropriate in most users, and may even cause unpleasant side effects.

“Be sure to check with your doctor before you start taking a regular supplement,” says Auguste. “If you take too much turmeric for a prolonged period of time, you may develop gastrointestinal issues.”

Where Can I Buy Turmeric?

With their increased popularity, turmeric supplements are now widely available.

However, before tossing one in your grocery cart, it’s important to do your research and trust your supplement supplier. The FDA classifies supplements as foods, so unlike prescription medications, their formulations and efficacy aren’t monitored. Lesser quality brands may be no more effective than sugar pills.

“Someone just going to a store and purchasing a turmeric supplement might be either wasting their money or not getting the effect they had hoped,” says Howrilla.
