About Lactobacillus GG
Lactobacillus GG, or LGG for short, is a healthy bacterial strain that is the most extensively researched and clinically proven strain available. This unique strain takes it name from its discoverers, Drs. Gorbach & Goldin of Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts who analyzed over a thousand different strains for ideal health promoting/probiotic characteristics and chose the LGG strain as the ideal probiotic.
Research shows that stomach acid kills many Lactobacillus strains on contact preventing those strains from reaching the intestinal tract. Many of the other strains that do survive the stomach acid do not adhere to the intestinal lining. The ones that are able to adhere typically do not grow in the intestinal tract as successfully as LGG and hence cannot form the same protective barrier in the intestines.
In study after study, LGG has been proven to better withstand stomach acid and form a stronger barrier than other Lactobacillus strains. The European and United States clinical research has consisted of double-blind, placebo-controlled studies (participants and researcher of the study do not know if they are receiving the real or inactive ingredient). The majority of these studies have been published in leading medicn America in other products such as yogurt, milk drinks, cheese, juices and capsules.

Lactobacillus GG is the common name for the bacterial strain Lactobacillus caseii subspecies rhamnosus. As this strain was discovered by Drs. Sherwood Gorbach and Barry Goldin in 1985, it is often referred to as Lactabacillus GG after the two discoverers' last names. Lactobacillus GG received a patent in the United States in 1987 and soon after in many other countries.
Lactobacillus has been the focus of probiotic research because of its proven safety, which is used in the fermentation of dairy and food products including yogurt, buttermilk, cheese and sourdough.
Lactobacillus GG, considered by researchers to be an ideal strain of Lactobacillus, is the most extensively researched and documented probiotics in the world.
An ideal Lactobacillus strain is one that is resistant to stomach acid and bile, attaches to human intestinal epithelial cells, colonizes in the human intestine, produces an antimicrobial substance, shows good growth characteristics and produces beneficial effects on human health.
