Zevia Frequently Asked Questions
What is Zevia?
Zevia with stevia is the first all natural zero calorie soda. It contains no artificial sugar substitutes - no aspartame (Nutrasweet), no sucralose (Splenda), and no saccharin (Sweet 'N Low). Zevia contains only natural ingredients and comes in six all natural flavors: Zevia Natural Cola, Zevia Natural Ginger Root Beer, Zevia Natural Orange, Zevia Natural Twist (lemon-lime), Zevia Natual Black Cherry, and Zevia Natural Ginger Ale.
What makes Zevia the world's first all natural zero calorie soda?
The ingredients. Zevia contains none of the chemically processed artificial sugar substitutes found in diet sodas because it is sweetened with natural stevia. Diet sodas also contain artificial flavors and colors. Zevia does not. With great effort, expense, and painstaking care, Zevia LLC found the healthiest, all natural ingredients available. Many "natural" sodas contain sugar which means calories. Diet sodas are usually sweetened with processed artificial sweeteners which means chemicals. Zevia with stevia is the only truly all natural diet soda.
What is Stevia?
Stevia is an herb native to South and Central America, and grown now in Asia. For centuries, native Americans of Paraguay and Brazil called it "sweet leaf" and used it to sweeten foods. Stevia helps with dental hygiene, recent studies found it has antioxidant properties and other health benefits, and it contains no calories.
What is erythritol?
Erythritol is a natural sweetener found in many fruits and vegetables. It is extracted from those sources by a natural fermentation process. The erythritol in Zevia exists in the same form - unchanged - as it does in plants and vegetables. Although erythritol is classified as a sugar alcohol, erythritol does not cause the gastrointestinal issues associated with other polyols like xylitotl, malitol, and sorbitol.
Why is Zevia packaged in aluminum cans instead of glass bottles?
Aluminum cans are better on the environment than glass bottles. For example, making cans from recycled aluminum cuts related air pollution by 95%, whereas making glass from recycled materials reduces air pollution by only 20%. Aluminum is much lighter than glass to ship and consequently reduces stress on the environment, such as gas required to fuel trucks, materials necessary to handle the load of glass, and extra emissions from freight vehicles due to weight. The aluminum can is the most valuable beverage container to recycle.
What effect does Zevia have on blood sugar levels?
None. Zevia contains no sugar, and has no effect on blood sugar levels. Zevia contains erythritol, a natural sugar alcohol found in fruits and vegetables. Neither erythritol nor stevia affect blood sugar levels.
Does Zevia contain any sugar or artificial sweeteners?
No. Zevia is sweetened instead with stevia. That's why Zevia is the only truly all natural diet soda.
Does Zevia have calories, carbohydrates, or fat?
No. Zevia has no calories, no net carbohydrates, and no fat. Zevia is Nature's Answer To Diet Soda.
Why do the Zevia Nutrition Facts Panels show carbohydrates?
Erythritol theoretically has carbohydrates. However, the body does not process them, which is why Zevia still has zero calories. Erythritiol is excreted through the urine unchanged from its original form. Of course, we disclose the carbohydrates, but we say Zevia has zero "net carbs" because the carbohydrates have no effect on blood sugar, do not assist in weight gain, and do not provide any energy like other carbs which also have calories.
What does all "natural" mean?
It means Zevia contains nothing artificial. Zevia has only pure ingredients. The United States Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration are considering particular definitions of "natural." Zevia meets or exceeds all these proposed standards. Beware of products that claim to be natural, but really are not. Zevia is truly all natural.
Does Zevia cause tooth decay?
No. Most tooth decay is caused by the fermentation of sugar in the presence of bacteria. Zevia is sugar free. Neither erythritol nor stevia - two of the primary ingredients in Zevia - are fermentable. In fact, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the use of the phrase "Erythritol Does Not Promote Tooth Decay" as a health claim on food packaging.
Is Zevia certified kosher?

Kola Nut Extract:
The kola nut in Dr. Zevia Natural Diet Soda is from a tree native to Central and Western Africa. Its extract provides Dr. Zevia Natural Diet Soda's distinctive classic cola flavor. The kola nut contains naturally occurring caffeine, as well as theobromine, a stimulating ingredient also found in chocolate and green tea.
Natural Tartaric Acid:
Tartaric acid occurs naturally in many plants, particularly grapes, bananas, and tamarinds, and is also found in wine. Many soft drinks use cheap, harmful phosphoric acid for flavor. Phosphoric acid is used in fertilizers and detergents. It erodes tooth enamel and has been linked to depletion of calcium, a contributing factor in osteoporosis. Safe, natural tartaric acid enhances Dr. Zevia Natural Diet Soda's zesty, tangy flavor.
Most diet sodas use artificially produced caffeine. The natural caffeine in Dr. Zevia Natural Diet Soda comes from coffee.
Natural Fumaric Acid:
Fumaric acid occurs naturally in flowers and mushrooms. It contributes to Dr. Zevia Natural Diet Soda's refreshing flavor.
The "Sugar Epidemic"
When we look at the major health problems confronting not just our country, but the entire world, two of the largest, obesity and diabetes, have direct links to sugar.
It’s shocking, but in the US, 27% of the adult population is obese, and even worse, 17% of kids 2-19 years old. In addition, 25 million Americans have diabetes, with another 79 million being classified as pre-diabetic. Simply put, sugar is killing us.
We hear a lot about “better for you” sweeteners, whether it’s honey, fruit juice, or agave. At the end of the day, your body can’t tell the difference – they’re all sugar. They may be metabolized slightly differently, but they all have calories, and all contribute to obesity, diabetes and other health problems.
And frankly, for a lot of people, artificial sweeteners just aren’t a good alternative. In a recent study, 64% of those surveyed said they were concerned about the safety of artificial sweeteners.
At Zevia, they feel it’s not just our business, it’s their responsibility to tell people that there’s a better way. They're passionate about stevia, and if they can make the soda category– and the world – better with their product, that’s a very meaningful contribution.
Once upon a time soda loving people had a revelation. They knew soda could be made smarter. The best ingredients with a guilt free sweetener seemed like an impossible dream. And yet, it wasn’t!
In 2007, amidst the rainy backdrop of Seattle, Zevia Zero Calorie Soda was born. Sharing their stevia sweetened Cola, Lemon Lime Twist and Orange soda with the world became Zevia's mission, and they were welcomed with open arms. People were craving a smarter soda!
Shortly thereafter they launched 3 more guilt-free flavors, Ginger Root Beer, Black Cherry and Ginger Ale, with great fanfare. The Zevia love was spreading in a major way. In 2009 we got a call from the Doctor, Dr. Zevia that is. The prognosis was looking good. Staying hydrated, cutting out artificial sweeteners and calories was prescribed, and it tasted great.
Zevia was loved by people all around the world but none they knew better than our fans in the Pacific Northwest, as it was home. However, cold soda and hot sun seemed like a perfect fit so they up and moved to Los Angeles! Southern California became their new home, but a big part of their heart is still in Seattle.
2011 brought five new flavors and some major growth. Word of smarter soda spread with the launch of five great tasting flavors like Cream Soda, Grapefruit Citrus & Caffeine Free Cola. Jaws dropped when they created the first diet Grape Soda and all natural Mountain Zevia, a mainstream favorite.
Their team of soda loving people grew a little more as the world’s passion for Zevia, the smarter soda choice became clear. So what to do when you have more Z team members? Make more flavors of course. Zevia lovingly welcomed Cherry Cola, Strawberry and Lime Cola into the fold in 2012. Their little family of 15 flavors has grown as time has flown by. So what’s next? Stay tuned!
