One of the world's most important cacao-producing regions, Bahia, Brazil is also one of the world's key biodiversity "hotspots." The Brazilian Atlantic Forest is home to thousands of plant and animal species but forest biodiversity has gradually disappeared in recent times.
Seeds of Change is partnering with Conservation International (CI), an organization that works to protect the world's biodiversity hotspots, to help strengthen the cooperatives of small and medium cacao producers and support rebuilding an environmentally sustainable cacao industry in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest where cacao is at risk from devastating disease and unsustainable farming practices.
The Seeds of Change partnership with CI marks the company's first venture under its one percent initiative in which Seeds of Change contributes one percent of its net sales to advance the cause of sustainable organic agriculture and biodiversity worldwide.
Seeds of Change and CI will work to expand and strengthen beneficial practices of traditional cacao farming that help naturally to protect and conserve forest biodiversity, while at the same time benefiting the livelihoods of cacao farmers.
Together, the two organizations will work with local cooperatives in Southern Bahia, including the Institute for Social and Environmental Studies of Southern Bahia (IESB) and the State University of Santa Cruz (UESC), to rebuild the use of a more sustainable system for cultivating cacao called "cabruca" and strengthen the cooperatives of small and medium cacao producers and help the transition from conventional to sustainable agriculture and establish the necessary guidelines for the biodiversity-friendly production of cacao. The project will standardize important biodiversity farming practices throughout the Bahia cacao farming community and work with local farms to facilitate CI's 'Corridor' strategy to consolidate and connect established protected areas with unprotected forests to aid in redevelopment and expand essential habitats for local plants and animal species.
Confederation of Dominican Cocoa Producers, Inc. (Conacado)
With the launch of our new line of chocolate, Seeds of Change is proud to be working with the National Confederation of Dominican Cocoa Growers, Inc., the largest confederation of organic cocoa growers in the Dominican Republic, to supply our chocolate. The Confederation or Conacado represents more than 15 percent of all cocoa growers in the Dominican Republic.
Their work with Conacado centers on helping farmers throughout this cocoa-producing region improve their incomes by saving their crops from pests and diseases, by helping them receive higher prices for their crops and through education and practical training for farmers.
This approach supports Conacado's mission to increase the income received by the cocoa producers and improve the quality of life for their families through sustainable management of plantations, improvement of the quality of their products, efficient commercialization of their crops, strengthening of their organizations and improvement and development of their community.
