In the first double-blind trial, which involved 50 subjects, Meriva improved treadmill walking performance from an average 83 yards to 250 yards after 2 months and 361 yards at 3 months. In the second double-blind trial, with 89 subjects, Meriva improved walking from an average 84 yards to 375 yards after 8 months. Treadmill speed was about 1.9 miles per hour with an upward inclination of 10% in both trials.
Proven for Eye Health—Two Clinical Trials
Some individuals can experience a reddening of the front of the eye that repeatedly reappears with the passage of time. In a clinical trial, 106 individuals with this problem received Meriva at 1,200 mg per day for 1 year. There were 86% fewer reappearances during this period, and in 82% of the subjects (87 out of 106) it did not return for the entire year of the trial.
In another clinical trial, which focused on the retina in the back of the eye, taking Meriva at 1,000 mg per day for 4 weeks significantly improved blood flow through the delicate small blood vessels in the retina. It also significantly improved visual sharpness, from an initial average of 20/122-155 to 20/32-78.

In a trial involving 50 individuals, half received Meriva (1,000 mg/day) and half did not (the control group). In a clinical trial on middle-aged men with prostate problems Meriva (1,000 mg/day) significantly improved all the parameters that were measured. Helps Protect Muscle Against Exercise Stress
Physical exercise can challenge the voluntary muscles. Both athletes and individuals who are occasional exercisers are subject to subsequent muscle stiffness and discomfort. Downhill walking, which forces muscles to lengthen while contracting, is especially likely to be structurally challenged. In another clinical trial, Meriva was evaluated for its ability to protect muscles used when walking downhill—those of the thigh.
For this short-term trial relatively fit men were recruited (regular aerobic exercisers for at least 4 hours per week, with maximal oxygen consumption of at least 35 milliliters per kilogram body weight), and randomly divided into 2 groups.20 The control group (10 men) received a placebo, the other (9 men) received Meriva at 2,000 mg per day, beginning 2 days prior to the test workout and continuing for 2 days afterward (4 days in total).
For the test, each man first spent 10 minutes warming up, then ran downhill for 45 minutes (on a treadmill set at negative grade, —10%). Two days later, MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) was done on both thighs to assess muscle integrity. The MRI imaging found significantly better muscle integrity in the Meriva group versus the placebo group. This trial established that taking Meriva™ before and after downhill running can confer protection against muscle alterations from exercise stress.
Findings from another clinical trial suggest Meriva can protect the integrity of nerve tissue as well as the voluntary muscles. Curcumin can regulate the activity of receptors on cell membranes that are sensitive to brain chemical messengers, and can down-regulate other cell membrane proteins to make nerves or muscle fibers less sensitive to substances that could adversely affect their functioning.
