Dandy Blend is made from the totally water-soluble extracts of three roasted herb roots: dandelion, chicory and sugar beet- and two roasted grains – barley and rye. Nothing other than extracts of the three roasted roots and two roasted grains is in Dandy Blend. It is naturally sweetened by the fructose released from the breakdown of the storage starch inulin when the dandelion and chicory roots are roasted. Because all sweetening comes from substances in the roots, Dandy Blend is a low carbohydrate beverage, with only 1 gram of carbohydrate per cup. All ingredients have been chosen because of the health benefits historically associated with them. Every cup contains 630 mg. of dandelion and chicory extract. Q. How can I use DandyBlend to get off coffee?
Many of our customers report that they have gone seamlessly from coffee to DandyBlend with no headaches or other withdrawal symptoms. However, if you wish, you can mix DandyBlend half and half with coffee at first, gradually increasing the DandyBlend until the coffee is eliminated. Other people drink coffee in the morning and DandyBlend the rest of the day.
Q. How can DandyBlend be so sweet if the ingredients do not include sugar?
Food produced by dandelion leaves is stored in the roots as the starch inulin, which is just a bunch of fructose molecules tied together by fragile bonds. Roasting breaks these bonds and releases the fructose. The fructose masks the bitterness, making the beverage more palatable.
Q. DandyBlend contains barley and rye. So, how can it contain no detectable gluten?
DandyBlend is made from extracts of barley and rye, not from barley and rye themselves. The roasted grains are mixed with the roasted roots, are ground, and then the water-soluble components (nutrients, minerals, biologically active substances) are leached out of the mash by hot water, just like you do when making tea. The liquid extract which is collected at the bottom is then spray dried to make the powder which we then call DandyBlend. Why no gluten? Gluten is not water soluble; it only dissolves in alcohol. Therefore, since no alcohol is used in the extracting process, all the gluten stays back in the mash. Tests done by Eliza-Tek Laboratories confirm the absence of detectable gluten in Dandy Blend.
Q. I have allergies to dandelion flowers. Is it OK to drink Dandy Blend?
Yes, there should be no problem. Dandy Blend is made from water soluble extracts of the roots of Dandelion. You are not even getting all the dandelion root--just that part that dissolves in water. That is why Dandy Blend it is totally free of gluten, pesticide residues, and other non-water soluble components that occur even in "organic" products.
Q. How do you make DandyBlend water-soluble?
DandyBlend is made only of extracts created by running hot water through the DandyBlend ingredients, and then spray drying the result and making it into powder. Add the water back (either hot or cold), and those extracts instantly rehydrate, just like freeze-dried vegetables or dried, powdered herbs.
Q. Is Dandy Blend organic?
The barley, rye and beets are commercially grown. The dandelion and chicory root, however, are grown on farms in Poland that produce medicinal herbs for the Eastern European market, where allopathic medicines are used far less than herbal ones. The fact that Dandy Blend is made only of water-soluble extracts of these five ingredients, with nothing else added in either the product or processing except water, means that only the goodness of these ingredients gets to you. You get none of the bad stuff. And, since dandelions are such effective "miners" of trace minerals from the undepleted subsoils into which the roots extend, you are getting more nutrients than you would get from commercially grown vegetables, probably as many as you would get from crops grown in "organic" soils.
Q. Are there calories in Dandy Blend?
A cup of Dandy Blend is like water to Weight Watchers point counters - 0 points! There are only 5 calories in a cup.
Q. Doesn’t roasting destroy some of the essential goodness of dandelion?
While some enzymes and vitamins might be affected, roasting at low temperatures has been the way herbalists have prepared dandelion root for centuries. Roasting releases beneficial aromatic products, converts inulin to fructose, and makes trace and major minerals more available.
Q. What is the shelf life of DandyBlend?
While DandyBlend officially has a shelf life of two years, in actuality, the compounds in the dandelion, chicory, the grains and the beetroot are so stable when kept in airtight containers that the shelf life is almost indefinite. It is just as invigorating after long storage as it is fresh.
Dandy Blend is so versatile that, depending on how much powder you use, it can be everything from a pleasant, nutty roasted tea to rich, strong espresso. It also is the easiest way to get the benefits of dandelion root into your diet. Add one spoonful in a cup of hot or cold liquid, stir, and it is ready to drink. It makes a particularly good iced coffee for use in warm weather.

About Dandy Blend
Dr. Peter Gail, a PH.D. ethnobotanist, has spent 47 years studying how various cultures use backyard weeds for food and medicine. His research revealed that dandelion is one of the most popular vegetables in the world, and is also a highly respected medicinal herb.
He founded Goosefoot Acres in 1988 to share his finding more broadly through his books, articles, and presentations. To make the health-promoting virtues of dandelion more readily available, he adapted a two-century-old Austrian herbalist's beverage into Dandy Blend Instant Herbal Beverage with Dandelion, Which is the easiest way to incorporate dandelion into the diet.
Today, Goosefoot Acres manufactures and distributes Dandy Blend Instant Herbal Beverage with Dandelions to health practitioners, health and natural food stores, and individuals.
