Mack's Questions & Answers

How long can I re-use te earplugs before they need to be replaced?
The earplugs may be re-used until they are dirty or no longer sticky (up to 5 uses). Keeping your hands and ears clean and dry prior to handling/applying the earplugs will help prolong the useable life of the earplugs.

What are the silicone earplugs made of and do they contain latex?
The earplugs are made of moldable, non-irritating silicone rubber and do not contain any latex

Can the earplugs be cleaned?
No. Keeping your hands and ears clean and dry prior to handling/applying the earplugs will help prolong the useable life of the earplugs.

Are there any additional application tips to help me get an airtight/watertight seal with the earplugs?
First try re-reading the directions, then apply a fresh pair of earplugs, making sure your hands and ears are clean and dry. Moldable silicone earplugs are designed to stick to the surface of a clean, dry ear. If the earplugs are being used in a moist and/or dirty environment, be sure the hands and ears are clean and dry before applying or re-inserting the earplugs or a proper seal may not be achieved. A sign that you have achieved a proper seal is that your own voice will sound more internal and exaggerated. Lastly, try covering the ear canal with the earplugs starting from the rear and moving toward the face. This technique squeezes out some of the air in the ear canal before sealing it shut, thus creating a bit of a suction effect. This last technique takes a little practice but creates an excellent seal when done correctly.

Can I break the earplugs in half for smaller sized ears?
No. The earplugs are designed to cover the ear canal. Breaking them into smaller pieces may cause the user to push the earplug into the ear canal making it more difficult to remove. They recommend using Mack's Kid's Size Silicone Earplugs for children six and under.

Will the earplugs melt if they are exposed to warm temperatures?
Absolutely not. The earplugs may become slightly more pliable when exposed to warm temperatures, but never viscous. Each batch of material is stability tested in their lab at over 350 degrees F. (The typical temperature for a hot tub and sauna is 104 degrees F and 170 degrees F respectively.) To date, not a single test has shown positive results for melting or shape transformation (instability).

Are the moldable silicone earplugs safe to use for flying discomfort? If so, when and how do I use them?
These earplugs have been used while flying since the early 1960's and their users report them to be safe and effective for reducing flying discomfort. In addition, Dr. Ira Rubin, MD, PhD has found Mack's Pillow Soft Silicone earplugs to be an effective tool in preventing ear pain in children, especially infants, during plane trips. As he is quoted in a leading pediatric journal: "When molded to the ear canal, they protect the ear from painful air pressure changes and reduce noise as well. Parents report that ear plugs work especially well with infants when left in place for the entire flight. I suggest a trial run a week before the trip if parents anticipate a child's refusing to leave the ear plugs in place."

It is believed that the plugs slow down and/or decrease the effects of the pressure changes, thus allowing the ears more time to respond and equalize. As mentioned above, another manner by which the plugs help is by lowering the noise levels in the cabin allowing the user to rest, thus helping combat the effects of jet lag. The benefit of this rest is twofold in that is also helps calm and relax the "tense" flyer, thus allowing them to equalize more effectively. If you are suffering from an ear health condition, they recommend you consult an E.N.T. (ear, nose, and throat doctor) before flying while using the earplugs.

As the earplugs are only to be used as an aid, the user needs to take an active roll in trying to prevent the onset of the discomfort. The person should try to stay ahead of and prevent the discomfort by trying to "clear" their ears by one of the various known methods. This is especially important during descent when most of the discomfort occurs. One of the methods involves plugging the nose while applying slight blowing pressure while holding one's breath. Another method is to chew gum. It is not the gum itself, but the wide opening motion of the jaw and the act of swallowing that helps aid in the equalization process. Therefore, either faking it or merely munching on some snacks can achieve the same results. They recommend wearing the earplugs the entire flight, up until the airplane has landed and the cabin has been depressurized.

Are all the styles of Mack's moldable silicone earplugs dual purpose? In other words, will all the Mack's moldable silicone earplugs help reduce noise AND block out water?
Yes. While they market their moldable silicone putty ear plugs using a variety of names and colors for several different target markets, they all provide the same great noise reduction and water blocking characteristics. Not all possible uses are listed on all product packages. Do not use for scuba diving or at depths over 10 feet.

Are their moldable silicone earplugs antimicrobial?
No. They are not antimicrobial. Mack's silicone naturally resists degradation from microbes for the usual product (up to 5 uses).

Are their moldable silicone earplugs resistant to microbes?
Yes. Mack's silicone naturally resists degradation from microbes for the usual product (up to 5 uses).

Can I carry on a conversation while wearing hearing protection?
Yes. Earplugs and other types of hearing protection devices are designed to bring noise levels down to a safer, more comfortable level. Most people without damaged hearing have no problem carrying on a conversation while wearing hearing protectors. Often, in noisy/loud environments, hearing protection wearers discover that these devices seem to "filter" out the background noise, actually making conversations and music clearer and easier to understand.

What is an NRR?
NRR is an acronym that stands for Noise Reduction Rating. The government, through the Environmental Protection Agency, now requires that anti-noise hearing protection devices carry a label showing the NRR. This means that, if you wear a product with an NRR of 29, for example, in accordance with it directions, the noise entering your ears will be reduced by 29 decibels.

Do earmuffs offer better hearing protection than earplugs?
No. A well-designed earplug can offer hearing protection comparable to or exceeding that of earmuffs at most frequencies. More important is evaluating the individual devices and the users compliance with the proper use of the device.

Is it possible that my ears can get used to the noise that causes hearing loss?
No. If your ears seem to get used to the noise, it is only an effect caused by the deafening of your ears. Ear do not "toughen up" with repeated exposure to noise. Mack's hearing protection devices can prevent this loss in quality of life from occurring.

How can I tell when a noise is potentially damaging to my hearing?
People differ in their sensitivity to noise. As a general rule, if you have to shout to communicate with a normally hearing person at a distance of about three feet, the noise is potentially harmful. Other signs to watch for are if the noise hurts your ears, causes your ears to ring, or causes temporary hearing loss for up to several hours after exposure.

About Mack's

In 1962, Raymond Benner, an up-and-coming symphony orchestra musician crossed paths with an elderly pharmacist who wanted to sell his earplug business. The cost was $2,000, and the business was said to earn $1,400 per year. Benner's wife, Cecilia, liked the challenge so a deal was struck to purchase the company, McKeon Products, Inc. Their only product, Mack's Earplugs (named after the previous owner) was made of a moldable clay mixture. Benner was happy with the earplugs, but believed they could be improved. He wanted to make the earplugs more comfortable to increase wearability. Also, being the avid swimmer he was, he thought a stickier, more malleable substance would better seal out water, thus preventing the annoyance of water-clogged ears. He knew a waterproof earplug would also help prevent the painful outer ear infections known as "swimmer's ear".

Through much trial and error, as well as different production techniques, he discovered a very unique substance that became the world's first moldable silicone earplugs. Benner was enthusiastic about the potential to help improve the lives of many people with his new invention. Struck by the unique appearance of the new earplugs (which looked and felt much like little white pillows) Benner changed the name to Mack's Pillow Soft Earplugs. The growth of both of his endeavors took Raymond and Cecilia from city to city. As Benner's then small family business grew, it moved from his home's basement through eight ever-expanding facilities. Raymond Benner, a renowned and accomplished classical symphony orchestra musician, retired after spending over 30 years between the Cleveland and Detroit Symphony Orchestras. The business that started as a side interest for the Benners, has evolved into the leader of the retail ear-care industry with it's original and #1-selling Mack's Pillow Soft moldable silicone Earplugs (U.S. retail market).

McKeon Products now offers a full range of moldable and pre-molded silicone and foam earplugs for a variety of uses. The Mack's line of products also includes a sleep mask, ear drying aids, and earwax removal drops. The company is still family owned and operated. Raymond Benner's sons Devin Benner, now CEO, and Pete Benner, continue in their father's footsteps at McKeon by keeping a hands-on approach to product research and development. Devin swims competitively with the United States Masters Swimming organization at the championship level and Pete is an avid triathlete and Ford Ironman Triathlon finisher. McKeon, an I.S.O. quality certified company since 1997, operates solely out of its state-of-the-art facility in Michigan. McKeon continues to grow by providing the highest quality, innovative products in the marketplace that are now sold worldwide.

    I recommend this product!
I love these and recommend them to my neighbors. I recently moved into an apartment downtown, and like to open my windows most of the year. (I'm in the pacific northwest.) They block out almost all noise. Each one lasts me a couple weeks, my son has worn them up to 5 weeks at a time satisfactorily. I woke when the fire alarm went off last month, but slept through the rock band at the Music Hall next door. The price is right, you can order different size packages, product is consistently excellent. They conform to your particular ear and don't stick way into your ear canal, so they are comfortable. I forget I have them in.
