Suncoat Water-Based Nail Polish Opal - 0.43 oz. (13ml)

In Suncoat Water-Based Nail Polish Opal - the chemical solvents (toluene and acetates etc) are replaced by water. Toluene and formaldehyde-free nail polish is only one step forward while Suncoat Water-Based Nail Polish Opal is a revolutionary advance! Suncoat Water-Based Nail Polish Opal contains 70% water. When applied, water vapor is released into the air, not chemical fumes. Thus Suncoat Water-Based Nail Polish Opal is:

  • environmentally friendly
  • does not dry or discolor nails
  • virtually odor free
  • non-flammable
  • Phthalate free
  • FD & C dye free

Mineral pigments and natural ingredients are used for Suncoat nail polish colors.

Color Intensity:
Some of the nail polish colors may not be as intense as they look in the bottle. This is partly because earth pigments, instead of FD&S dyes, are being used to color the nail polish. Apply a minimum of 2 thin coats and then additional thin coats to strengthen the color.

Suncoat Water-based nail polish has been formulated to adhere well to the nail bed. If left on nails for an extended time, it may require more effort to remove. For easier removal, remove the polish weekly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I remove water-based nail polish?
Suncoat Water-based nail polish has been formulated to adhere well to the nail bed. If left on nails for an extended time, it may require a little more effort to remove. For easy removal, remove the polish weekly.

  • Remove with Suncoat natural nail polish remover:
    • Suncoat natural nail polish remover is recommended although solvent based remover will take off the polish. Dab the remover onto nails using a Q-tip / or a cotton ball, and allow at least 2 minutes for the remover to soften the polish. Then rub the nails until the polish is fully removed. Repeat when necessary.
    • Rinse hands with water to remove residue.
  • Remove without Suncoat natural nail polish remover:
    • Soak nails in hot water for couple of minutes, then gently scrap off the polish using a fingernail.

Important: If your nails are weak and damaged, please consult your health care provider for advice.

What if the polish becomes too thick and streaky?
Simply add water ONE DROP AT A TIME to the polish and shake well before use. Add one drop of water each time. Adding too much water to the polish may result in polish separation.

Is water-based nail polish 100% natural?
Unfortunately, No. But it is the most natural nail polish available today.

Generally speaking, water-based nail polish contains about 60-70% natural ingredient, namely water. The remaining 30-40% of nail polish is mainly film-formers, typically acrylic copolymer, styrene-acrylic copolymer and polyurethane, or combinations of these. These film formers are unfortunately synthetic, not natural. They are the plastics that coat the nails after the polish dries. They form film only and should not harm the nails.

The rest of the ingredients in water-based nail polish, after water and film formers, are film-forming aids, soap and colorants. They form the minor portion in the polish, and only account for 1-10%.

Suncoat Water-based nail polish is about as natural as you can get. There is about 70% water, 1-3% natural colorants (namely earth pigments), and there is no phthalate of any kind.

Is it possible to make 100% natural nail polish?
Yes. However, natural nail polish does not last on nails. It comes off VERY easily in water and has very little staying power.

Are there any patents on water-based nail polish?
Yes. There are many patents on water-based nail polish. Some of the patents are going back as far as 1980. It is fair to say that water-based nail polish technology is well patented.

Many of the patents are owned by well-established cosmetics companies such as L'Oreal, Revlon etc.

SO, why has there been no quality water-based nail polish on the market until now?
The answer is simple: too difficult to formulate.

Water-based nail polish has been a long held dream for cosmetic scientists. Many cosmetic giants have made the attempt to develop water-based nail polish. It is however the technical difficulties that prevented many of the major cosmetics makers from being successful in this area.

Based on their experience and knowledge, the major technical challenges for formulating water-based nail polish is lack of adhesion (to human nails) and slow drying time.

At Suncoat Products Inc., they also faced these challenges, and struggled for a long while. Thanks to Liu,Yingchun, the mastermind behind Suncoat water-based nail polish, they finally broke through, and came up with an innovative technology (currently patent-pending) that makes today's Suncoat water-based nail polish quick drying, and long lasting. Truly the best water-based nail polish available today.

Is Toluene and Formaldehyde-free chemical nail polish as good as water-based nail polish?
Not at all.

You can now find Toluene and Formaldehyde-free nail polishes in drug stores, department stores, mass merchandisers, etc. These nail polishes are BETTER than those which still have toluene and formaldehyde-releasing ingredients. However, they are still chemical solvent based nail polish.

Chemical solvents, namely acetates, are still the major ingredient in the polish: 60-70% . These nail polishes still give off chemical fumes, pollute the air, have an offensive odor, and are highly flammable and explosive. They still harm nails, making the nails yellow, brittle and weak.

In water-based nail polish, all the chemical solvents are replaced by water. Toluene and formaldehyde-free nail polish is one step forward…Suncoat water-based nail polish is a revolutionary advance!

About Suncoat
Suncoat is dawning a revolution for all things nails, giving the world a natural, wholesome way to wear the colors they love with a collection of water-based nail polish bursting with lots of attitude and none of the bad stuff. No formaldehyde, toluene, acetates, phthalates or alcohol - just bold, brazen color and happy conscious.

Made from equal parts nature's finest, innovative science and a dash of mother's love, Suncoat was founded by polymer and organic chemist Yingchun Liu - Ying for short - when her daughters wanted to paint their nails up pretty. Put off by all the poison in the typical bottle of nail polish, Ying took her scientific smarts to task and developed the first ever non-toxic, natural formula that's just as effective and quick drying as the smelly stuff, but great for nails, the world and the environment.

Ying holds a BSc degree in polymer chemistry and MSc degree in organic chemistry. Ying was also a Ph. D candidate at University of Waterloo, Canada, in organic/biopolymer chemistry during 1993-1995. Before starting Suncoat, Ying worked as a Formulation Chemist, Senior Coatings Chemist and Technical Director for industrial coatings and polymer resins manufacturers in Canada for many years.

Suncoat's Mission
Suncoat is the pioneer in non-toxic nail polish, blazing the trail of natural beauty, fusing nature with technology to create innovative products founded on the balance of vegan, mineral-based ingredients and water, one of the principal components of our bodies. By putting nature back into nail polish, they're motivating people to do the same in other aspects of their lives, thus inspiring a little more harmony back into the world.

Suncoat proudly formulate and manufacture all their products at their own facility in Guelph, Ontario, Canada.

Suggested Use

Back to top of page

In preparation for using Suncoat water-based nail polish, ensure that your nails are dry and free of grease, skin lotion, and dirt. Clean your nails with soap and water. Oil and skin lotion repel water-based polish, so they may significantly affect the polish's durability.

No base coat needed: as Suncoat water-based nail polish will not stain your nails.

Apply multiple thin coats for long lasting effect, and to avoid streaking. Brush on lightly and evenly. Two coats, or more, are needed for a long-lasting finish. Allow the polish to dry between coats – 30 seconds, or more, depending on the humidity and temperature.

Can add one or 2 drops of water to the polish bottle if the polish is too thick. Shake well before use. Adding too much water can cause color separation.

Avoid soaking your nails in hot water during the first couple of hours after the application. Normal showering and dishwashing is usually fine after one hour as long as the polish is not scratched. Ideally do not use very hot water on your nails for the first 4 hours after application. Although dry to the touch, the polish is still curing / drying throughout the day (or overnight if applied in the evening).

If your nails are weak and damaged, please consult your health care provider for advice.

Once open, use within 24 months. Keep in a cool and dry place, out of reach of children. Never allow the polish to freeze.
