Preservatives and their packaging have never met. That’s because the packages Pacific uses allow even the most perishable foods to stay fresh and tasty without chemicals or preservatives. Around here, the only good waste is no waste. At Pacific, they’ve made “Zero Waste” a long-term company goal. Ambitious? Certainly, but it’s not impossible. Every year they’re using less and repurposing more. 80% of their company waste is now recycled or repurposed. 100% of their food scraps are converted into animal feed or compost. Hundreds of thousands of pounds of okara, a soy by-product, are made into high-protein animal feed. Even their animals’ waste is converted into phosphorus irrigation and compost or transformed into bedding. While they’re not one to brag, they’re proud of their accomplishments. As they see it, the only way to move forward is to leave nothing behind.

When their founder and his family first purchased farmland in the Willamette Valley, they didn’t just envision what the land might become, they recalled what it once was. On some of the properties were wetlands that had been buried or overrun with invasive species. Restoring the land to healthy, fertile farmland was an ambitious and costly endeavor. Many said it couldn’t be done. But by working closely with the Wetlands Conservancy, the wetlands in Deer Creek, Hedges Creek and Three Sisters have been reborn. Today, they filter water and offer a valuable habitat for birds and other wildlife. And if the land there is that healthy, imagine what the food they grow there is like.
Sustainable farming is something they’re passionate about so they try to lead with a kind hand. That means protecting their farmland, raising animals humanely and treating the people they work with fairly.

Accountability is a lot to ask of a hazelnut (or any other nut for that matter). But at Pacific, their ingredients are held to some pretty high standards. Long before there were USDA Organic labels, they began tracing the origin of every natural and organic ingredient used in their foods.

“What if” gets asked a lot ‘round these parts. What if they operated more efficiently? What if they made less waste? What if they recycled more? They’re constantly working to lessen their carbon footprint. They use packaging that requires no energy-intensive refrigeration. They’ve eliminated their trash compactor. They’ve changed the way they use energy. In 2010, they were even awarded the BEST award as one of Portland’s sustainable leaders. But it’s hardly about the glory. For them, they won’t rest til they’ve left this world a better place. Really, their work has just begun.
